C6 He Didn't Plan to Save Me in the First Place

People can be so fickle. Once they find someone new, leaving the old love behind seems only natural.

Even though Muh Linfeng's request was sincere, I really didn't want to get involved with Mu Chengyang again. Forcing a smile, I replied, "Muh Linfeng, I don't want to have anything to do with Mu Chengyang anymore. Maybe you could ask someone else?"

Muh Linfeng hugged me and said, "Who could possibly match your beauty? There's no one like you."

Despite his rare sweet talk, I hesitated. I didn't want to go through what happened three years ago again. I chuckled awkwardly and said, "This kind of thing is better suited for someone new. That girl, Huang Ying, seems capable and well-spoken. She could handle it."

To my surprise, Muh Linfeng's expression changed immediately when I mentioned "Huang Ying." He frowned and said, "How could you suggest such a task for someone fresh out of school?"

I found his reaction odd. Why was it okay for me but not for her? I turned to look at Muh Linfeng.

Realizing he might have overreacted, he gave an awkward smile and continued to praise me, "What does a young girl fresh out of school know? She can't compare to your charm and grace."

I still didn’t want to go.

Seeing my reluctance, Linfeng softened his tone and continued, “Remember back in the day? You were the star of the dance floor, turning heads wherever you went.”

His words hit a sore spot. I had chosen to be with Linfeng because he treated me well and seemed reliable. I wanted to leave behind that wild, chaotic life and settle down. I never expected I’d still have to rely on my social skills to make ends meet.

Noticing my change in expression, Linfeng pulled me close and kissed me. His warm breath started to ease my heavy heart, and I felt that he truly loved me.

“Han,” Linfeng said earnestly, “I love you so much. That’s why I’m eager to make money, so you can have a good life. Just this once, please. Once the company is back on its feet, I promise I won’t take any more risks. I’ll be there for you.”

Looking into Linfeng’s eyes, I saw they were filled with nothing but me. After all, he was my husband, and I had to support him. If my help could get the company through this rough patch, maybe his cold demeanor would change.

With these thoughts, I nodded once more.

Linfeng hugged me tightly, kissed me joyfully, and whispered, “Thank you for doing this.”

I brushed off Muh Linfeng's hand and walked away quietly, recalling the business card I had just tossed into the trash. The thought of it made me feel both helpless and amused.

Standing by the trash can, I took a deep breath and started rummaging through it to find the card I had so disdainfully discarded. After a bit of searching, I finally found it and, after some hesitation, decided to call the number on it.

When the call connected, I spoke cautiously, "Hello, this is Ximo Xu. I'm looking for Mr. Chengyang Lu."

On the other end, Chengyang Lu seemed to have anticipated my call. His voice was smug and arrogant as he said, "Oh, you actually called. I thought you'd have more pride. Seems like your infatuation with me runs deep."

His arrogant tone reminded me of the times he had insulted me in the past. Unable to suppress my anger, I retorted, "Chengyang, don't be so full of yourself. I lost interest in you long ago. I got married three years ago."
