C14 The Family of the Third Branch Who Had Been Bullied
Bai Yun glanced at Mu Jin. Although Mu Jin meant well and genuinely cared for her sister-in-law, sharing her personal thoughts seemed pointless, as Mu Jin wouldn't fully understand. Bai Yun simply smiled a little.
"Having faced life and death, I've come to realize a lot. As you said, marrying into the Shang family is better than staying with the Bai family. As long as I'm careful and follow their rules, they shouldn't make things too difficult for me. I was too stubborn before and made foolish choices, but I won't do that anymore."
"It's great that you've come to this realization," Mu Jin replied. She noticed that Bai Yun's change wasn't just about understanding things better; her entire demeanor had shifted. She now carried herself with the grace of a young lady from a prominent family, and her usual timidness had vanished.
Aside from this, Mu Jin couldn't detect anything else unusual about Bai Yun, so she dismissed her concerns as overthinking. Mrs. Zhao had relieved Bai Yun from cleaning the pigsty, allowing her some time to rest.
With the medicine applied, Mu Jin didn't linger. She encouraged Bai Yun to lie down and rest for a while. Mu Jin always felt sorry for Bai Yun having to rest in the cramped firewood room. The Third Branch's house was small to begin with. When the in-laws were alive, it was manageable with three rooms and a small courtyard.
But after the elders passed, Mrs. Zhao found an excuse to take over two of the rooms for her son, Bai Hui, leaving the Third Branch with just the small remaining space.
Even though Mu Jin felt sorry for Bai Yun, there wasn't much she could do. After all, Bai Yun was an unmarried young woman, and sharing a room with her brother and sister-in-law was definitely inconvenient. So, Mu Jin patched together a mattress for Bai Yun as best as she could.
She thought about asking Bai Lian to find some time to gather wood from the forest to build a bed for Bai Yun. It would be better than sleeping on that pile of firewood. But then the news came about the Shaang family looking to counteract bad luck through marriage.
It was said that the eldest young master of the Shaang family had been ill for many years, and despite seeing numerous doctors, his condition hadn't improved. Recently, it had worsened significantly, leaving them with no other choice but to try this last resort. The Bai family wasn't aware of the current state of the young master, but it seemed he was on the brink of death, making the marriage arrangement urgent.
When the Shaang family approached with the marriage proposal, they brought a contract. Once signed, the wedding was arranged immediately. From the initial visit to the wedding day was barely ten days. Since Bai Yun was set to marry in just a few days, they didn't bother building her a bed.
Bai Lian had disappeared somewhere, likely understanding the need to give Bai Yun space to rest. This allowed Bai Yun to sleep peacefully.
Since the accident that inexplicably brought her into this story, Bai Yun had been on edge. It wasn't until she lay down on the bed that she realized just how exhausted she truly was.
The bed here was nothing like her custom-made one, and even compared to her college dorm's bunk beds, it seemed worn and old. Yet, for Bai Yun, it was enough. Lying down, the pain in her body faded away, and she drifted into sleep.
In her dreams, Bai Yun vaguely heard a loud crash. Groggily, she opened her eyes to see blood, shattered glass, and the cramped interior of a car. The chaotic sounds of footsteps, police sirens, and ambulance alarms filled her ears. Was she back in reality? Could it be that everything before was just a dream in her final moments?
