C9 Silly Girl 9
"Sorry, I really had no idea." Fu Yunfei was so infuriated by the woman across the line that he found himself momentarily at a loss for words.
After a brief pause, he managed to ask, "Yesterday, I had Han Kun pick you up. Why didn't you show up?"
At his question, Fengye couldn't help but laugh.
Her laughter rang shrilly through the phone, grating on Fu Yunfei's nerves. He felt an uncomfortable sensation he couldn't quite articulate, but it was clear to him that she was laughing at his expense.
"Su Lan!" he barked, his voice low and seething with anger.
Fengye finally stopped laughing and said, "Fu Yunfei, do you find this amusing?"
"What?"
"Let me put it this way," Fengye explained. "Last night's events were a way for me to prove something to myself. Now that I have my answer, you and I are done. We have no further connection."
"What do you mean?"
What does she mean? Is he supposed to have a thousand questions?
Fengye sighed, exasperated. Isn't this the outcome he desired?
Why was he pretending to be clueless now?
"I'm spelling it out for you," she said firmly. "From now on, we go our separate ways. We'll be like strangers, not recognizing each other even if we cross paths."
After she finished, silence fell on the other end of the line. She waited a few seconds for a response, but none came, so Fengye hung up.
He should be overjoyed now, she thought. The one who had been hounding him was finally out of the picture.
Stretching languidly, Fengye gazed at the sun overhead and squinted with a sense of contentment.
She was not Su Lan; she was Fengye.
Like the wind of a gentle breeze, like the leaves on a tree.
She came from another world, solely to fulfill Su Lan's heartfelt wish.
Her previous fixation on Fu Yunfei had cost her life, family, friends, and her sense of self.
Her arrival offered Su Lan a second chance at life.
At this moment, Su Lan harbored no regrets about studying abroad or her parents' decisions. Even at death's door, she didn't see Fu Yunfei as her destined partner.
Her only regret was her own foolishness and stubbornness, which had caused so much trouble that her parents had to bear.
She yearned to find her true companion and lead a life filled with joy and happiness, free from petty worries. She was determined to show Fu Yunfei that even without him, her life would still be extraordinary.
"Su Lan."
Fengye's enjoyment of the delightful sunshine was abruptly disrupted, leaving her slightly irked.
As her vision slowly adjusted from the dazzling light, she could make out a familiar silhouette approaching in the distance.
The man was clad in baggy sportswear, which did little to conceal his impressive physique.
"Su Lan, what brings you here?"
"Hey." It seemed like foes were destined to cross paths.
"Han Kun, does this road belong to your family? Am I not allowed to use it?"
Han Kun was taken aback. "What's gotten into you? Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?"
Fengye rolled her eyes and brushed past him.
For reasons unknown, Han Kun followed her and said, "Hey, Fu Yunfei mentioned he invited your family to dinner yesterday. Why didn't any of you show up?"
Without looking back, Fengye replied with a smirk, "Hey, are we obligated to attend just because he invites us? And why are you bringing this up?"
Han Kun's annoyance was palpable. "Hey, can't we have a civil conversation? I was invited last night too, you know. I was there. You were supposed to ride with me in the afternoon, and it was all set until..." He trailed off, the word 'good' lodged in his throat.
Recalling the previous afternoon's phone call, Han Kun wisely chose to drop the subject.
His reminder, however, jogged Fengye's memory.
Indeed, Su Lan's recollections confirmed that Han Kun had been there.
