C13 Not Lending
Lin Ya wasn't pleased: "Why are kids interrupting when adults are talking? It's not easy for Sheng Chu to find a wife."
The eldest in Sheng Zhenxi's family has a limp, and the second son already has a wife and kids. Now, they've finally found a girl willing to marry Sheng Chu, but she's demanding quite a bit. If they can't meet her demands, she won't marry him.
Lin Ya didn't want to spend money, but he also couldn't let his son stay single forever. So, he started borrowing things from other families.
Miao Xiu had long been fed up with people like this, who never helped but always asked for things: "We have plenty of sons ourselves who need looking after. We can't just lend things out."
Their family wasn't wealthy enough to just give things away without expecting them back. The third son's family would borrow a cabbage today, a carrot tomorrow, a chicken the next day, and then an egg, constantly asking for things but never returning them.
Moreover, those gold earrings were bought with money Sheng Zhenbei secretly saved by selling his blood. Such meaningful items weren't something anyone would lend out.
Seeing he wasn't getting anywhere, Lin Ya turned to Sheng Zhenxi: "Why don't you talk to your brother? As an outsider, my words don't carry much weight."
Miao Xiu ignored Lin Ya's sarcastic remark. They simply weren't going to lend anything.
Sheng Zhenxi looked at Sheng Zhenbei: "You're Sheng Chu's Fourth Uncle. His second and third brothers already have kids. Now that he's finally found someone, we can't just ignore it."
Sheng Zhenbei: "I can help out. We've got a few pounds of carrots left in the field. I'll just give him some."
Who needs carrots? They've got plenty of their own!
Lin Ya: "Hey, Fourth Uncle, after marrying two wives, we're broke. Can you talk to Fourth Aunt about lending us some money?"
Sheng Nanzhen chuckled, "Third Aunt, you married two wives. What about all that gold? Just use some of it."
Lin Ya: "I gave it to my wives. How can I get it back?" As soon as he said it, Lin Ya's face fell. He realized he had misspoken.
Sheng Nanzhen: "If you can't get it back, why are you saying you'll pay us back?"
Lin Ya, embarrassed and angry, snapped, "Adults are talking here. Stay out of it."
Miao Xiu chimed in, "Zhen is right. You made a big show marrying two wives. Just use some of that gold. And those earrings are only for my Zhen."
After saying that, Miao Xiu didn't want to deal with Sheng Zhenxi and his wife anymore. She had to make breakfast for her daughter.
Sheng Zhenbei stayed silent, puffing on his pipe under the eaves.
Lin Ya wanted Sheng Zhenxi to speak up.
Sheng Zhenxi said, "Hey, Zhenbei..."
Without even looking up, Sheng Zhenbei replied, "If there's nothing else, just head back. You know how things are at home right now. The kids keep getting sick, and we're drained. There are a few small carrots left in the field. If you want, I'll set them aside for you."
Lin Ya was furious, all because of that no-good Sheng Nanzhen. Why did she have to keep living?
"You heartless miser, don't think everything's fine just because your daughter survived. She'll still die sooner or later."
Say whatever you want, but don't bring her daughter into it. Especially since her daughter's life was a miracle.
Miao Xiu, filled with anger, grabbed a broom from behind the door and charged out, saying, "Lin Ya, have you lost your mind? Coming to our house first thing in the morning to curse us? Get out! Everything you said will come back to you..."
She thrust the broom right at his face.
Lin Ya shrank back behind Sheng Zhenxi.
