C15 Dead Goose

“Did someone just mistake it for unconsciousness that day?”

“Think of something quickly. I think getting it from your second sister-in-law will be even harder.”

“Whatever it takes, just give it a shot.”

“If it really doesn’t work out, we’ll have the wives at home hand over their gold. If they don’t, they’ll have to support the eldest brother in the future.”

Let’s see who’s willing.

Lin Ya nodded, but still ground his teeth. After all the effort this morning, it was all for nothing.

Nanzhen asked, “When is the third brother coming back?”

“His foot is still in a cast. The doctor said not to move him for now, so he’ll stay at the clinic for a couple of days.”

Nanzhen replied, “Then I’ll go see him later.”

“No, your health just got better. Wait until you’ve fully recovered,” Miao Xiu immediately refused.

“Mom, I’m really fine. My health is improving, and after taking another dose of medicine today, I’ll feel even better.”

“I’ll make you some medicine in a bit,” Miao Xiu said.

“Your fourth brother is taking care of your third brother.”

If you’re not going, then don’t go.

After breakfast, Nanzhen watched her mom busy cleaning the chicken coop. She grabbed some greens and tossed them onto the nearby grass, drawing the chicks in a flurry.

Miao Xiu had fenced off a section nearby to raise a flock of ducks. Seeing the greens, they quacked eagerly, wanting to come over, but were held back by the bamboo fence.

She glanced a few times, her eyes drifting toward the distance where a pond lay. A flock of white-feathered geese was leisurely swimming there, though they weren't her family's; the pond belonged to the Tianjiao family. At this moment, a few geese stood motionless by the water's edge.

Zhao Li looked at the dead geese with a pained expression, muttering under her breath, "Who could be so heartless to poison our geese?"

However, Sheng Qiang had a different opinion. "Mom, these geese weren't poisoned," he said, examining one closely. "They must have gotten sick."

Their family had leased the pond, raising fish in the water and geese by the shore. This made them relatively well-off in Azure Mountain Village.

"If they weren't poisoned, then what happened?"

"If it was poison, more would be dead. We need to move these geese before any disease spreads. We should contact Aunt and sell the healthy ones quickly."

"These geese could wait another two weeks," Zhao Li suggested.

"Mom, we can't wait. I'm worried about an outbreak. If that happens, we'll lose everything."

Meanwhile, Sheng Nanzhen couldn't hear their conversation, but she was puzzled. Why would someone like Tianjiao be interested in Yang Shuxian?

She used to constantly advise her not to fall for Yang Shuxian because he was poor. The original owner was infatuated with Yang Shuxian simply because he was the most handsome in the area. Sheng Tianjiao's ideal man should be more than just good-looking. But with their family's current financial situation, what should she do? Now that she's here, she can't let herself stay in poverty forever, can she?

Seeing her daughter staring blankly in the direction of Sheng Tianjiao's house, Miao Xiu felt a pang of sympathy. Is this what people mean by heartbreak? When Miao Xiu married Sheng Zhenbei, there wasn't much romance involved. Her daughter always talked about wanting to fall in love freely... but it ended up going nowhere. She had heard about a girl in the neighboring village who was so devastated after being abandoned by a man that she became desperate. Suddenly, she worried if her daughter might end up the same way.

Noticing the little chicks on the ground, she picked one up and brought it to Sheng Nanzhen. She handed the newly hatched chick to her daughter.
