C6 If I Am like a Pig Then What Is He?
It seemed like she remembered something, so Wang Chunhua poked her head back in and called out, "Dawei, go back to your room and get some sleep."
"Mom, it's fine. I haven't seen Dawei in a long time, and I want to chat with him for a bit," Zhou Ruonan said with a smile, looking at Zhou Dawei.
Seeing this, Wang Chunhua had no choice but to leave the room, feeling that her daughter was acting a bit strange today. It was the first time she'd seen Zhou Ruonan stand up to her father.
She glanced down at Zhou Dawei's feet, noticing his worn-out canvas shoes, yet he still insisted on wearing them.
"Our Dawei looks quite handsome today!" Zhou Ruonan thought gratefully as she looked at him.
In the original course of events before her rebirth, this scene never happened. She had gone off to college peacefully and then met him.
Back then, although Liu Ergou had some inappropriate thoughts about her, he never came back up after going down the coal mine.
"Hey, Sis, do you really think you can get into college?" Zhou Dawei asked, looking up at Zhou Ruonan.
"Of course," Zhou Ruonan replied confidently. "The acceptance letter will be here in a few days."
"Sis, you're amazing. Not like me—I can't focus on studying at all. I heard from my teacher that big things are happening down south, and they said our future will be completely different," Zhou Dawei said, standing up with a hint of confusion.
Zhou Ruonan chuckled softly and said, "Your teacher seems to have a good eye. Listen to your sister—study hard. With an education, you'll be able to marry a beautiful wife, make Mom and Dad proud, and have some respect when you go out."
The night passed quietly, and at the break of dawn, Ruonan woke to the sound of a rooster crowing. On the table, there was a sweet potato, a bowl of porridge, and a small plate of pickled vegetables. Seeing these, Ruonan felt a wave of nostalgia, as it had been ages since she last had such a meal.
Just then, Dawei walked in from outside, wearing a straw hat and looking like he had just come back from the fields, his face glistening with sweat.
"Hey, sis, you're up! Dad was just talking about you, saying you sleep like a log, just like a pig," Dawei teased, mimicking their father’s tone, making Ruonan chuckle.
"If I'm a pig, then what does that make him?" Ruonan laughed, finding the humor in it all. Having just come back to life, she was still adjusting to the time difference, and after staying up late the previous night, getting up early was a challenge.
Judging by Dawei’s appearance, he must have been up with their father around five or six in the morning.
Dawei took a big gulp of water and said, "Well, sis, I'm off to work."
Ruonan quickly stopped him, asking, "Aren't you going back to the county for classes today?"
Dawei hesitated before replying, "Sis, tomorrow's Sunday. Maybe I should just skip it. Otherwise, I'm always on the road."
"You!" Ruonan sighed, understanding that her brother had come back just for her. She decided not to press the issue further.
Taking a couple of quick bites of her porridge, she said, "Wait for me. I'll go with you in a bit."
Dawei was taken aback for a moment, then replied, "Ruonan, maybe you should skip it. It's hot today, and Dad's still upset."
Finishing her porridge, Ruonan wiped her mouth and said, "It's no big deal. If Dad sees me working, he might calm down."
Dawei couldn't argue with Ruonan, so he picked up a hoe for her and said, "Alright, but there are a lot of people in the fields, and plenty of gossip too."
"Dawei, since when did you become so fussy, worrying about gossip?" Ruonan teased, putting on a straw hat with a laugh.
Dawei blushed, feeling he was just being considerate, not fussy.
As they walked, Ruonan suddenly remembered something and asked, "By the way, Dawei, how are your grades at school?"
Dawei's face fell, and he looked down, a bit embarrassed.
