C18 You Really Have to be Free
Before setting out, Shan Ruoshui made sure everything was perfect. In the mirror, she saw herself in a youthful pink dress suit, paired with modest heels and topped with a wool coat—trendy choices that suited her age, striking a balance between formality and youthful energy. Meeting a seasoned professional, she knew she couldn’t appear too mature.
Arriving early at the agreed location, Shan Ruoshui mentioned Liu Ann's name to the receptionist, who then led her to a recording studio.
Taking a deep breath, she knocked, then confidently entered the room, noticing only a couple of people inside. One was a familiar face—Jian Yan’s acquaintance, the renowned sound engineer Jing Hao. The other, an older man with graying hair, was likely the veteran Liu Ann had mentioned.
Shan Ruoshui greeted Jing Hao warmly. "Hello, Mr. Jing. I'm Shan Ruoshui. I've had the pleasure of listening to your recordings before, and it's a privilege to finally meet you in person." Her sincere tone was instantly likable.
She then politely greeted the older gentleman and settled onto the sofa.
Shan Ruoshui couldn’t help but take in the recording studio. Though compact, it was fully equipped, boasting top-of-the-line gear.
Liu Ann arrived fashionably late, and with everyone present, they began recording.
It turned out the older gentleman was the original creator of the song, responsible for both lyrics and composition—a true talent. Rumor had it the production team had spent considerable effort to bring him on board. Known for his quirky temperament, he was affectionately called Mr. Yinan in the industry.
The song, titled "A Moment of Serenity," was a masterpiece in both lyrics and melody, blending calmness with a free-spirited flair, crafted specifically for the TV series. Normally, someone of Shan Ruoshui’s current standing wouldn’t have access to such a project, making her undeniably fortunate.
After familiarizing herself with the melody and lyrics, Shan Ruoshui attempted her first recording. But Mr. Yinan immediately called for a halt!
Second time... third time... it was all the same.
"Can you sing or not? If you can't, get out!" Mr. Yinan said, glaring angrily. Everyone around held their breath, and the room fell silent.
"Emotion, emotion! How many times do I have to say it?"
Shan Ruoshui took a deep breath, realizing she might have been too focused on technique.
She tried to find the right feeling again, reflecting on everything she had been through. She poured her emotions into the song, releasing her desire for freedom through the melody. It wasn't about technique this time; it was about touching the heart.
Everyone was thrilled with this performance. This was exactly what they wanted!
Mr. Yinan's expression softened, recognizing her potential. Her voice was not only unique and pleasant, but her emotions were rich and genuine. He noticed the subtle complexity and depth in her eyes when she sang with feeling. What had she been through at such a young age?
He felt a sense of appreciation for her talent.
The recording session went smoothly, and afterward, Mr. Yinan handed Shan Ruoshui a business card, telling her she could reach out to him for any music-related questions in the future. After a bit more socializing, everyone went their separate ways.
Sitting in the car on her way home, Shan Ruoshui felt relaxed. The promotion for the new show was over, and the theme song was recorded. What would the future hold?
Hopefully, everything would be fine.
She pondered over her recent closeness with Xi Mu, thinking it might be time to tell him the truth.
Without hesitating, Shan Ruoshui picked up her phone and called Xi Mu, suggesting they meet for dinner.
Xi Mu was a bit surprised. He hadn't expected Shan Ruoshui to invite him out, but he didn't overthink it.
They agreed to meet at a restaurant known for its good atmosphere and privacy. The owner used to be in the entertainment industry, so many celebrities frequented the place.
Shan Ruoshui dressed up nicely, her chocolate-colored hair styled in soft waves, casually draped over her back. She wore asymmetrical star earrings that highlighted her fair and charming face, with eyes like water and lips red and teeth white.
"Well, this is quite nice," she said, grabbing her purse and heading out the door.
The restaurant was dimly lit, with a terrace overlooking the lake. Each table was separated by soundproof screens, creating semi-private spaces. You couldn't see in from the outside, but from inside, you had a clear view out. The space was filled with charming, lazy English tunes—perfect for a romantic date. But was it really the right setting for what she needed to discuss today?
As Shan Ruoshui walked in, she felt a bit light-headed. The waiter guided her to Xi Mu's table, where she saw him already there, sitting idly and waiting for her.
Xi Mu watched as Shan Ruoshui approached. Even though they'd met many times and spent considerable time together, he couldn't help but be a little dazzled. She wore a mauve off-the-shoulder gown, the halter strap gently wrapped around her slender, fair neck, revealing her alluring shoulders. She looked at him with a smile.
Once seated, the two engaged in cheerful conversation. As the dishes arrived, Shan, a true foodie, enjoyed the meal so much that she momentarily forgot the serious matter she needed to discuss with Xi Mu.
It wasn't until they were nearly finished with dinner that she prepared to bring up the topic that had been on her mind.
"Xi Mu, I have something to tell you..."
"You need to be ready for this, okay?" Shan Ruoshui said, her eyes showing a mix of hesitation and a hint of pleading.
