The next morning, bright and early, Wu Daxiang was waiting to see what the Yang family would do. Chen Guifang had informed him the night before that the Yangs had been notified.
Wu Daxiang was certain that once Yang Chenxuan knew about this, he would definitely take action. However, when morning came, a few workers and the Yang father and son were huddled by the machinery, discussing something. They had already gone through several cigarettes.
These workers were from families in the village facing tough times, with no land by the river. Initially, they hadn't been involved in sand digging, but when the Yang family needed help, Yang Xiuyuan recruited them.
At this moment, the three workers looked serious, their cigarettes never leaving their hands. Yang Xiuyuan was trying to persuade them about something, while Yang Chenxuan stood by, unhurried.
Finally, the three workers seemed to reach a decision. They stood up and each headed home. By lunchtime, as everyone returned to eat, nearly the whole village had heard the news.
The Yang family was offering to rent out their machinery for free, only requiring a $500 deposit, which could be refunded at any time. The three workers who had been helping the Yangs spent the entire morning borrowing money from anyone they could.
When Wu Daxiang heard this news, he immediately thought it was Yang Chenxuan's idea. Although he didn't know the specifics, offering such good machinery without any rental fee was like handing out free money!
Upon hearing the news, the other sand diggers reacted differently. Some, with a positive mindset, felt a tinge of envy, while others, with less noble intentions, were already feeling jealous.
In the afternoon, as work resumed, Wu Qianjin, Wu Sheng, and Zhou Hengfeng, who were helping the Yang family with sand digging, pooled their resources and brought over a substantial stack of cash.
The sand diggers stopped their work and gathered around to watch.
After counting the money, Yang Xiuyuan announced loudly, "Qianjin, Wu Sheng, Hengfeng, five hundred bucks is just right. As we agreed before, if there are no other issues, let's sign."
The three men nodded repeatedly, "Yang, no problem, we trust you."
"Absolutely! We trust you, let's sign."
Yang Chenxuan produced a handwritten contract, and the three men signed it, making two copies, effectively outsourcing the work.
Collecting a five hundred deposit was something Yang Chenxuan had planned all along.
They needed to buy more equipment, which would definitely require money. Purchasing four or five machines would cost several thousand dollars. The family could afford a little over one machine, and with this five hundred, they could buy two.
Once those two machines were bought and rented out, they could purchase another one.
In the afternoon, Yang Xiuyuan and Zhang Yuehua stopped digging sand, and Huang Shiming's sign and automatic sand sifter were completed.
With everyone's help, a five-meter-high steel frame was erected, with large red letters spelling out "Xiuyuan Sand Yard."
Seeing the name, Yang Xiuyuan couldn't stop smiling.
Naming something after yourself is quite an accomplishment! However, some people secretly scoff, thinking, "Why should it be named after Alex Yang when so many of us are working on this together?" But they keep quiet because the land is leased by the Yang family.
Alex Chen put a lot of effort into setting up the sign. To ensure it wouldn't fall, he had it dug over three feet deep and reinforced with concrete. After installing the sign, they began testing the automatic sand sifter.
For this sifter, Alex even bought a motor to power it. It didn’t need to be expensive, but he still spent over three hundred dollars on a second-hand one. The sifter worked perfectly. As sand flowed from the conveyor belt into the sifter, it shook back and forth, letting sand fall through the gaps while stones rolled down the slope.
This saved a lot of manual labor and significantly increased efficiency, making others quite envious. The three guys leasing the machine, led by Jim Wu, couldn't stop grinning at the results.
That evening, many people approached Jim and his partners, curious about how it all worked. Jim and his team, always smiling, explained everything in detail. It was straightforward: the three of them pooled together a five-hundred-dollar deposit to use the machine. They didn’t have to worry about selling the sand; they sold it all to Alex's team for a dollar fifty per load, settling accounts monthly.
The machine broke down on its own, so Chenxuan and his group called someone to fix it. If the machine was lost or deliberately damaged, the $500 deposit would be non-refundable. It was as simple as that.
Others did some quick math: at least twenty loads a day meant $30, split among three people, which was $10 each. Those inquiring could only envy them quietly.
However, Wu and his two friends shared another piece of news: Chenxuan's family planned to buy a few more machines to lease out. This news got others thinking—leasing a machine could earn them even more than before!
Suddenly, those who had planned to target Chenxuan's family scattered like sand in the wind, all eager to lease a machine themselves.
The next day, Xiuyuan arrived at the site at 8 a.m., and Wu's group had already dug out nearly three truckloads of sand. As soon as Xiuyuan showed up, a crowd gathered around him.
"Hey, Yang, we heard you're buying more machines?" someone asked eagerly.
Xiuyuan felt a sense of pride. Many in this crowd had once considered sabotaging his family's equipment, and now they were all smiles, trying to cozy up to him. "That's right! Xuan is already out buying them."
"Count me in, Yang. Four of us want to lease a machine."
"We want in too!"
"We'll lease one as well!"
The crowd pressed in closer, each person eager to secure a deal with Xiuyuan.
Yang Xiuyuan was pushed back repeatedly by the crowd, but he felt quite pleased and shouted, "Everyone, take it easy, take it easy!"
"Those who want to bid for the contract, come register with me, and we'll draw lots to decide."
Yang Xiuyuan shouted with all his might, but many people continued to push forward, with some even trying to offer bribes, which he refused.
By the afternoon, Yang Chenxuan returned with a large truck, bringing back two machines. Huang Shiming accompanied him to check out the machinery and see if they could replicate it.
When the machines were unloaded, the sand diggers stopped working and gathered around. They knew that securing a contract for one of the machines was the real opportunity. Once more machines were available, manual digging wouldn't stand a chance, and there'd be no work left.
Throughout the day, Yang Xiuyuan registered five teams, mostly consisting of three to five people. After all, coming up with five hundred dollars at once was a stretch for most. Wu Qianjin and his two partners had to sell their piglets to scrape together the money.
Yang Xiuyuan stood on a high spot and shouted, "Those who registered, come to my place later, and we'll discuss how to draw lots."
"Got it!" someone shouted back. With five teams and two machines, the odds were pretty good.
While some were excited, others felt disappointed. Those who couldn't come up with the money or form a team naturally felt left out.
Watching others make money while I'm not earning anything is frustrating!
