C11 The Evil Mother and Daughter
“A sigh…”
Mrs. Ping didn’t answer but looked at her with a long sigh.
Niannian suddenly realized that her dad must be upset because of her. Shi Ranran must have come back and stirred things up, saying things to make him angry.
She asked, feeling guilty, “Is Dad resting in his room?”
“Yes, young lady, you’re grown up now. As a girl, you must learn to protect yourself. Don’t argue with your dad anymore. He really just wants what’s best for you.” Mrs. Ping held her hand, advising earnestly.
“Okay, I understand.”
Niannian nodded obediently.
Only then did Mrs. Ping feel at ease to say goodbye, “I should be going now.”
“Mrs. Ping, do you have to leave?”
“Yes, I’ve seen the master, and it’s time to go.”
Niannian could tell Mrs. Ping was reluctant but still insisted on leaving. There must be a reason she couldn’t share. Niannian didn’t press her or ask questions, instead politely offering, “Mrs. Ping, it’s so late now. Let me have the driver take you home.”
Mrs. Ping’s expression suddenly changed, and she shook her head repeatedly, refusing, “No need.”
Seeing her so adamantly refuse, Niannian couldn’t ignore it. She decided not to make things difficult for Mrs. Ping, “Alright, just be safe on your way back.”
“Don’t worry.”
She watched Mrs. Ping leave.
Anxious to find her dad, she remembered that during these few days in her past life, she had been recovering at the Garden and hadn’t seen Mrs. Ping or known about her dad not feeling well.
Could it be that Dad really had a heart condition in a past life, and she just didn't know about it?
As she passed by Ranran's room, she overheard a conversation inside. It sounded like Ranran was complaining to Gu Xinmei about something.
"Mom, why did you let that old hag in?"
"Oh, my little darling, keep your voice down."
That old hag? They must be talking about Mrs. Ping. It seems Ranran and Gu Xinmei really don't like her and don't want to see her at home.
Niannian peeked cautiously to make sure the hallway was empty before pressing her ear to the door. She was curious to hear what grievances the mother and daughter had against Mrs. Ping.
"That idiot isn't home right now, and Dad's resting in his room. The house is full of our people, so what's there to be afraid of?" Ranran's voice was arrogant and overbearing.
"I told you to keep it down. She hasn't left yet, and she might overhear you. Don't forget the trouble she caused before. She deliberately came when your dad was home, so how could I stop her from coming in?"
Ranran complained disdainfully, "She's like a ghost that won't go away. We kicked her out, and she still has the nerve to come back. I think she's just asking for trouble."
Even though Gu Xinmei's voice was low, Niannian, with her keen senses, heard it all. It seemed her guess was right; Mrs. Ping's departure was indeed orchestrated by this mother-daughter duo.
Just now, Gu Xinmei's words implied that Mrs. Ping had overheard some secret, possibly an unsavory one involving Gu Xinmei and Shi Ranran. As for the secret's details, she wouldn't learn them today; she'd have to find a chance to ask Mrs. Ping later. To avoid being caught eavesdropping, Shi Niannian had to leave for now.
After listening to their conversation, Shi Niannian suddenly remembered that everyone at home, except for her dad, was on Gu Xinmei's side. If they wanted to harm her dad, it would be all too easy.
