C3 A Luna the Pack Would Never Accept

The first rays of dawn had barely touched the Blackwood Mountains when the entire pack was already awake.

News traveled faster than the wind.

Servants whispered as they prepared breakfast.

Warriors discussed it while changing shifts.

Mothers exchanged rumors at the communal well.

Children repeated stories they barely understood.

By sunrise, every wolf in the Blackwood Pack knew only one thing.

The future Alpha's fated mate...

...was Aria Nightshade.

The girl everyone had spent years calling wolfless.

Unfortunately, the story changed every time it was retold.

"I heard the Moon Stone cracked."

"They say the Goddess herself cried."

"My husband heard Elder Rowan fainted."

"I was told Aria used forbidden magic."

"Magic? I heard she's the daughter of a rogue."

"No, she's cursed."

"No... she's blessed."

No one knew the truth.

But everyone had an opinion.

Inside a small wooden cottage on the edge of the pack lands, Aria sat quietly beside the window.

Sleep had never come.

The events of the previous night replayed endlessly in her mind.

The ceremony.

The whispers.

The warmth spreading through her chest.

Damon's golden eyes.

And the voice...

Her wolf.

She gently placed a hand over her heart.

"Are you still there?"

A soft chuckle answered her.

"Always."

Relief flooded her face.

"I was afraid last night had only been a dream."

"No, Little Star."

"Our story is only beginning."

Aria smiled despite herself.

"I still don't know your name."

There was a brief silence.

Then...

"Lyra."

Aria whispered it aloud.

"Lyra..."

The name felt strangely familiar, as though it had always belonged inside her heart.

"It's beautiful."

"Mother gave it to me long before you were born."

Aria frowned.

"What mother?"

Silence.

"Lyra?"

No answer.

She sighed.

"You really like keeping secrets."

A warm feeling brushed gently against her emotions.

"Not forever."

"Only until you're ready."

Before Aria could ask another question, three sharp knocks echoed through the cottage.

Her smile faded instantly.

No one ever visited.

Especially not this early.

She slowly opened the door.

Standing outside was Beta Gideon.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

His silver armor carried the Blackwood crest across the chest.

Four warriors stood behind him.

None of them smiled.

"Miss Nightshade."

His voice remained perfectly formal.

"The Alpha requests your presence."

Aria's fingers tightened around the edge of the door.

"Did... did something happen?"

"The Alpha did not explain."

Her stomach knotted.

Had she done something wrong?

Was the bond being questioned?

Or...

Had Damon changed his mind?

"I'll come."

She quietly closed the door behind her.

As they walked through the village, conversations stopped one after another.

Every wolf stared.

Some looked curious.

Others openly disapproving.

One elderly woman muttered just loudly enough to be heard.

"She'll bring ruin to this pack."

A younger man shook his head.

"Our future Luna?"

He laughed bitterly.

"What a joke."

Aria lowered her eyes.

Lyra immediately spoke.

"Don't shrink."

"They hate me."

"No."

"They fear what they don't understand."

"They've hated me for years."

"Then stop measuring your worth by people who never bothered to know you."

Aria didn't answer.

Because part of her still believed the pack was right.

She had never led anyone.

Never fought beside warriors.

Never even shifted into her wolf.

How could she possibly become Luna?

The Alpha's manor came into view.

Its towering stone walls cast long shadows across the courtyard.

Warriors lined both sides of the entrance.

As Aria climbed the wide marble staircase, she noticed something unusual.

Every guard watched her.

Not with mockery.

With caution.

Almost...

Respect.

It confused her.

Inside the manor, servants hurried through polished hallways carrying trays and documents.

The atmosphere felt tense.

Beta Gideon stopped before two enormous oak doors.

"The Alpha is waiting."

He pushed them open.

Aria stepped inside.

The room was larger than she expected.

Ancient maps covered one wall.

Bookshelves stretched from floor to ceiling.

A fire burned quietly inside a stone fireplace despite the mild weather.

Alpha Magnus stood near the window with his hands clasped behind his back.

Damon stood several feet away.

Neither man spoke immediately.

Aria suddenly became painfully aware of how small she felt.

"You sent for me, Alpha."

Magnus turned slowly.

His sharp gaze rested on her for several long moments.

Then...

"Sit."

She obeyed without question.

The Alpha remained standing.

"Damon."

The young Alpha looked toward his father.

"Tell her."

Damon inhaled slowly.

His expression was unreadable.

"There is something you need to understand."

Aria's heartbeat quickened.

"What is it?"

"The bond between mates..."

He paused.

"...cannot be hidden."

She nodded uncertainly.

"I know."

"No."

His voice grew quieter.

"You don't."

He stepped closer.

"The moment the Moon Goddess revealed us as mates..."

"...every Alpha within a hundred miles felt it."

Aria blinked.

"What?"

"Not just Alphas."

Magnus finally spoke.

"Elders."

"Seers."

"And creatures much older than werewolves."

A chill ran down Aria's spine.

"What does that mean?"

Neither man answered immediately.

The silence itself felt like a warning.

Finally...

Alpha Magnus looked directly into her eyes.

"It means..."

"...your life no longer belongs only to you."

***

Outside...

Far beyond the manor walls...

Someone watched from the forest.

Hidden among the towering pines.

A pair of amber eyes followed every movement near the Alpha's residence.

The stranger pulled a dark hood lower over his face.

Then disappeared silently into the trees.

Aria stared at Alpha Magnus, her fingers tightening around the arms of the chair.

His words echoed relentlessly inside her mind.

Your life no longer belongs only to you.

She swallowed hard.

"I... I don't understand."

Magnus walked toward a large table in the center of the room. Ancient maps, faded scrolls, and sealed letters lay neatly arranged across its polished surface.

He rested both hands on the table.

"Most werewolves believe the Mate Bond exists only between two wolves."

He looked at Aria.

"That belief is incomplete."

Damon remained silent.

He had heard fragments of these stories while growing up, but his father had never explained them in detail.

"There are ancient laws," Magnus continued.

"Laws older than the Blackwood Pack."

"Laws older than the Alpha Council."

"Laws that even the strongest Alpha dares not break."

Aria frowned.

"What do they have to do with me?"

Magnus hesitated.

"That is exactly what I intend to discover."

A knock sounded at the door.

Before anyone could respond, Beta Gideon entered.

He bowed respectfully.

"Alpha."

Magnus nodded.

"What is it?"

"The Council Elders have arrived."

Damon's head snapped toward Gideon.

"So soon?"

"They came before sunrise."

Magnus wasn't surprised.

"They wasted no time."

Aria looked between them.

"The Council?"

Magnus faced her again.

"The Council governs disputes between packs."

"They oversee ancient laws."

"They preserve order."

"And..." He paused. "They never involve themselves unless something threatens every pack."

A cold weight settled in Aria's stomach.

"Are... are they here because of me?"

No one answered.

She already knew.

Minutes later...

The great doors of the council chamber opened.

Five elderly wolves entered.

Each wore long silver robes embroidered with the symbol of the Crescent Council.

The atmosphere inside the room changed instantly.

Even Damon straightened instinctively.

The eldest among them stepped forward.

His snow-white beard reached the middle of his chest.

His pale blue eyes settled immediately on Aria.

"So..."

His voice carried surprising strength.

"She is the girl."

Not her.

Not Miss Nightshade.

Just...

"The girl."

Aria fought the urge to lower her head.

Magnus greeted them with a respectful nod.

"Elder Cassian."

Cassian returned the greeting before slowly circling Aria.

He observed her carefully.

Almost as though searching for something invisible.

"You were silent for eighteen years."

"Yes."

"You heard your wolf only last night."

"Yes."

"You possess no training."

"No."

"No combat experience?"

She shook her head.

"No leadership experience?"

Again...

"No."

The elder stopped directly in front of her.

His expression remained impossible to read.

"Interesting."

Another council member spoke.

"We inspected the Moon Stone."

"It bears no sign of corruption."

A third added,

"The bond is genuine."

Silence followed.

Finally...

Cassian turned toward Damon.

"You accept this bond?"

Before Damon could answer...

His wolf surged violently.

Yes.

Damon clenched his jaw.

His own answer wasn't nearly as simple.

"I acknowledge it."

Cassian's sharp eyes narrowed.

"That wasn't my question."

The room grew tense.

Damon took a slow breath.

"I..."

His gaze drifted toward Aria.

She looked terrified.

Confused.

Completely overwhelmed.

She hadn't asked for any of this.

Neither had he.

"My wolf accepts her completely."

Cassian waited.

"And you?"

The question struck harder than Damon expected.

Because he honestly didn't know.

His instincts demanded one thing.

His responsibilities demanded another.

"I need time."

The elder nodded thoughtfully.

"An honest answer."

Before anyone else could speak...

The chamber doors burst open.

Selena Frost hurried inside, her father—the Gamma—close behind her.

"Forgive the interruption."

Her breathing was uneven.

"But this concerns the future of the pack."

Magnus frowned.

"This meeting is private."

"It shouldn't be."

Selena stood tall despite the disapproving looks around the room.

"I have something everyone deserves to hear."

No one interrupted.

She slowly turned toward the Council Elders.

"With all due respect..."

"How can a girl who spent eighteen years without a wolf possibly become Luna?"

The room fell silent again.

Selena continued.

"A Luna must protect her people."

"Lead beside her Alpha."

"Command respect."

She glanced briefly at Aria.

"What has she ever done to earn that?"

Every word hit its target.

Aria's chest tightened.

Because she couldn't answer.

Not honestly.

She had never led anyone.

She had never fought.

She had never proven herself.

Selena looked toward Damon.

"If war broke out tomorrow..."

"Would you trust her to stand beside you?"

Damon didn't answer.

The silence spoke louder than words.

Aria felt something inside her crack.

Not the Mate Bond.

Her heart.

She lowered her eyes before anyone could see the tears threatening to fall.

She's right.

The thought slipped into her mind before she could stop it.

I don't belong here.

Lyra growled.

The sound startled Aria.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't violent.

But it carried unmistakable anger.

"Never measure yourself by someone else's fear."

"She isn't questioning your worth."

"She's protecting her own position."

Aria slowly lifted her head.

For the first time...

She noticed something she'd missed before.

Selena wasn't looking at her.

She was watching Damon.

Every word...

Every accusation...

Every carefully chosen sentence...

Was aimed at him.

She wasn't trying to destroy Aria.

She was trying to make Damon doubt the Moon Goddess.

That realization changed everything.

Elder Cassian finally broke the silence.

"You ask fair questions."

Hope flashed across Selena's face.

Then the elder continued.

"But you ask the wrong person."

He turned toward Aria.

"You have three days."

Aria blinked.

"Three days?"

"Three days to prove whether you are worthy of becoming the future Luna of the Blackwood Pack."

The room erupted.

"What?"

"That's impossible!"

"No one has ever done that!"

The elders ignored the outcry.

Cassian's voice remained calm.

"If she succeeds..."

"No one will challenge the Moon Goddess' decision."

"And if she fails..."

His eyes shifted toward Damon.

"The Alpha's heir will be permitted to reject the Mate Bond before the next full moon."

Every sound disappeared.

Aria's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Three days.

Only three days.

To prove herself.

Or lose everything she had only just found.

Selena slowly smiled.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

She believed Aria had already lost.

Outside the manor...

Hidden among the trees...

The hooded stranger watched the council chamber through an open window.

He quietly reached into his cloak and removed a small black crystal.

It glowed faintly.

Without hesitation, he whispered into it.

"My King..."

"The rumors are true."

"The girl has awakened."

Hundreds of miles away...

Kael Draven stood alone on the highest tower of the Lycan Palace.

The crystal in his hand glowed in response.

He listened in silence.

His expression darkened with every passing second.

"So..."

he murmured.

"They intend to judge my Queen."

The air around him turned icy.

Snow swirled violently across the mountain peaks.

Every Lycan in the fortress instinctively stepped back.

They all recognized the terrifying pressure radiating from their king.

Kael slowly closed his hand around the crystal until it shattered into glittering black dust.

His golden eyes burned with quiet fury.

"They have..."

He turned toward the horizon.

"...three days."
