C5 The First Trial Begins
The morning sun hung low above the Blackwood Mountains as the ancient pack bell rang three slow, mournful chimes.
Dong...
Dong...
Dong...
Every wolf in the village stopped what they were doing.
Merchants abandoned their stalls.
Warriors left the training grounds.
Even children stopped playing as the sound echoed through every corner of the territory.
The First Trial was about to begin.
Within minutes, hundreds of pack members gathered around the Circle of Valor, an ancient arena carved into the mountainside generations ago.
Massive stone pillars surrounded the arena, each engraved with the names of former Alphas and Lunas who had earned their place through courage rather than birth.
Aria had passed this place countless times.
She had never imagined she would stand in its center.
Today...
Every eye was on her.
She could feel their stares before she even entered the arena.
Some pitied her.
Others waited eagerly for her to fail.
"The poor girl looks terrified."
"As she should."
"She doesn't even know what the First Trial is."
"I heard she's never held a weapon."
"How can someone like that become Luna?"
The whispers followed her with every step.
Lyra spoke gently inside her mind.
"Keep walking."
"I'm trying."
"No."
"Walk with your head high."
"They haven't defeated you."
"Don't surrender before the trial even begins."
Aria slowly lifted her chin.
Her heartbeat still raced.
Her palms were damp with sweat.
But she refused to look at the ground.
Not today.
At the highest platform overlooking the arena sat the five Council Elders.
Alpha Magnus occupied the seat at their right.
Beside him stood Damon.
Dressed in a fitted black warrior's uniform embroidered with silver thread, he looked every bit the future Alpha the pack admired.
Yet his attention never left Aria.
Not for a single moment.
Selena noticed.
Jealousy burned behind her composed smile.
She stood beside her father, Gamma Victor, pretending to watch the crowd.
In reality...
She was watching only one person.
Aria.
"You'll never survive this," she murmured under her breath.
Victor leaned slightly toward his daughter.
"Patience."
His voice was barely audible.
"She'll destroy herself."
A loud blast from an ancient bronze horn silenced the arena.
Elder Cassian rose slowly from his seat.
"The First Trial shall now begin."
His voice echoed across the stone walls.
"Many believe a Luna is chosen because she is beautiful."
He shook his head.
"Beauty fades."
"Some believe she is chosen because she is powerful."
Again, he shook his head.
"Power without wisdom destroys kingdoms."
His piercing gaze settled on Aria.
"The first quality of a true Luna..."
"...is courage."
He lifted an old wooden staff toward the center of the arena.
"The First Trial..."
"...is the Trial of Courage."
A ripple of excitement spread through the crowd.
Several older wolves exchanged uneasy glances.
One elderly warrior whispered,
"They're using that trial?"
"They haven't used it in decades."
Aria looked from one face to another.
She didn't understand.
"What exactly is the Trial of Courage?" she asked quietly.
Cassian didn't answer.
Instead, another elder struck the stone floor with his staff.
A deep rumbling echoed beneath everyone's feet.
The arena floor began to move.
Ancient gears hidden beneath the stone groaned loudly.
Dust filled the air.
Slowly...
The center of the arena split apart.
A circular staircase emerged from beneath the ground.
It descended into complete darkness.
A cold wind rose from below.
It carried a scent unlike anything Aria had ever smelled.
Old stone.
Earth.
And something...
Wild.
Very wild.
The crowd instinctively stepped backward.
Even experienced warriors looked uneasy.
Aria stared into the darkness.
"What is down there?"
No one answered.
Elder Cassian finally spoke.
"Beneath this arena lies the Cavern of Echoes."
"It was built by our ancestors."
"For centuries, every Alpha and Luna has entered its depths before taking their place beside the pack."
He paused.
"Some emerged stronger."
His expression darkened.
"Some never emerged at all."
A wave of murmurs swept through the arena.
Aria felt the blood drain from her face.
Lyra remained calm.
"Don't fear the cave."
"Fear what it will show you."
Aria frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"The Cavern does not test your strength."
"It tests your soul."
Before Aria could ask another question, Beta Gideon approached carrying an old iron lantern.
He handed it to her.
"The flame will guide your path."
She accepted it carefully.
The blue fire burning inside the lantern never flickered despite the wind.
"It will burn only for one who still has hope," Gideon said quietly.
"If the flame dies..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
Cassian raised his staff once more.
"The rules are simple."
"You will enter alone."
"You may not receive help."
"You may not use another person's strength."
"You must face whatever awaits you."
"If you reach the Heart Chamber..."
"...the First Trial ends."
"And if I don't?" Aria asked.
Silence answered her.
The meaning was clear.
Failure wasn't the only possible outcome.
Death was.
A movement high in the stands caught Damon's attention.
His wolf stirred uneasily.
Something isn't right.
Ryker's growl echoed inside his mind.
Someone came with the crowd.
Someone dangerous.
Damon's sharp eyes swept across the spectators.
Hundreds of faces looked back at him.
Families.
Warriors.
Children.
Merchants.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Yet his wolf refused to settle.
Find them.
Now.
Damon's eyes continued scanning the crowd.
Row after row.
Face after face.
Nothing.
Yet the uneasy feeling refused to leave him.
Ryker growled again.
We're being watched.
Not by one of ours.
Damon subtly motioned toward Beta Gideon.
The Beta immediately understood and walked over.
"What is it?"
"Double the guards around the arena."
Gideon frowned.
"You've sensed something?"
"My wolf has."
Without asking another question, the Beta gave a slight nod before quietly issuing orders to the surrounding warriors.
From the highest row of the arena...
A hooded figure watched everything.
Hidden beneath a weathered traveler's cloak, Lucien folded his arms across his chest.
His amber eyes followed Aria as she stood at the entrance to the cavern.
She's calmer than I expected.
A faint smile crossed his face.
Good.
Far beyond the Blackwood territory...
Kael Draven suddenly slowed his horse.
The column of Lycan warriors behind him stopped instantly.
Snow drifted through the mountain pass.
The King closed his eyes.
His connection to the ancient bond pulsed faintly.
Once.
Then again.
A whisper brushed against his consciousness.
Not words.
Fear.
Aria's fear.
His jaw tightened.
"She's entered the first trial."
General Ronan urged his horse forward.
"Your Majesty?"
Kael opened his eyes.
"We increase our pace."
"The horses have ridden without rest since dawn."
"They can rest after we reach her."
There was no anger in his voice.
Only certainty.
No one argued.
Within seconds, the entire Lycan escort surged forward once more.
Back at the Circle of Valor...
Aria stood at the top of the stone staircase.
The blue lantern trembled slightly in her hand.
Not because of the wind.
Because of her own heartbeat.
She looked once toward the crowd.
Her eyes met Damon's.
For the briefest moment...
Everything else disappeared.
The whispers.
The Council.
The trial.
Even the arena itself.
There was only the silent question reflected in his golden eyes.
Are you all right?
Aria gave the smallest nod.
She wasn't.
But she wanted to be.
Damon instinctively took a step forward.
Ryker pushed against his control.
She needs us.
Before he could move again...
Alpha Magnus placed a firm hand on his shoulder.
"Stand down."
"Father—"
"The trial has begun."
"I only want to—"
"You are the future Alpha."
Magnus' voice remained calm, but every word carried the weight of command.
"If you interfere..."
"...every trial becomes meaningless."
Damon slowly unclenched his fists.
***
His father was right.
That didn't make it easier.
Aria turned away and descended the first step.
Then another.
And another.
The deeper she walked, the colder the air became.
The sounds of the arena slowly faded until only her own footsteps echoed through the darkness.
The staircase finally ended inside a vast underground chamber.
She raised the lantern.
Its blue flame illuminated ancient stone walls covered with faded carvings.
Wolves.
Moons.
Crowns.
And symbols she had never seen before.
Some looked strangely familiar.
Others made her skin crawl.
Water dripped steadily somewhere in the darkness.
The cavern smelled of damp earth and old secrets.
"Slow down."
Lyra whispered.
"Look carefully."
Aria obeyed.
As her eyes adjusted, she noticed dozens of weathered statues lining both sides of the passage.
Each depicted a former Alpha or Luna.
Their faces were stern.
Proud.
Their stone eyes seemed to follow her.
A shiver ran down her spine.
"I don't like this place."
"You're not meant to."
She had taken only a few more steps when a voice echoed through the tunnel.
Soft.
Fragile.
Familiar.
"Aria..."
She froze.
Her breath caught.
"No..."
It couldn't be.
"Aria..."
The voice came again.
Closer this time.
She slowly turned.
Standing at the end of the passage...
Was a woman.
Her long dark hair fell over her shoulders.
Her gentle brown eyes shimmered with tears.
She wore a simple cream-colored dress.
Exactly as she had appeared in Aria's oldest memory.
"M...Mother?"
The woman smiled.
"My little star."
Aria's lantern nearly slipped from her hand.
Her entire body shook.
"I've missed you."
The woman stretched out her arms.
"Come here."
Every instinct urged Aria to run toward her.
She had dreamed of this moment since childhood.
One embrace.
One chance to hear her mother's voice again.
One chance to ask why she had been left alone.
Tears streamed freely down her face.
"Mother..."
She took one step forward.
Then another.
The woman smiled warmly.
"That's it."
"Come to me."
"STOP!"
Lyra's roar exploded inside Aria's mind.
She flinched violently.
"What?"
"Don't move!"
Aria's foot froze in midair.
Confusion flooded her thoughts.
"But..."
"Look at her feet."
Aria blinked through her tears.
Slowly...
Her gaze lowered.
The woman's smile never changed.
Neither did her posture.
But beneath the hem of her dress...
There were no footprints.
No shadow.
She wasn't touching the ground.
Aria stumbled backward.
The woman's expression twisted instantly.
Her warm smile vanished.
Her skin darkened like burning paper.
Her eyes became endless pools of black.
An inhuman shriek ripped through the cavern.
"I said..."
The creature's voice became a monstrous growl.
"COME TO ME!"
Its body stretched unnaturally.
Bone cracked.
Claws burst through human fingers.
Its jaw split wider than any wolf's.
The illusion shattered completely.
Aria gasped.
"What is that?"
"Your fear."
Lyra answered.
"Given form."
The creature lunged.
Aria screamed and threw herself aside.
Its claws slammed into the stone floor where she had been standing only a heartbeat before.
Rock exploded.
Dust filled the cavern.
The blue lantern rolled across the ground but miraculously remained lit.
Aria scrambled toward it.
The creature laughed.
A horrible, echoing sound that made the entire cavern tremble.
"You still believe..."
it hissed,
"...that anyone will ever love you?"
It attacked again.
This time faster.
Aria barely managed to dodge.
Its claws sliced across her sleeve, tearing the fabric and drawing a thin line of blood along her arm.
Pain burned through her skin.
She pressed herself against the cold cavern wall, breathing hard.
"I... I can't fight this."
"Yes, you can."
"I don't even know how!"
"Because you're trying to fight with fear."
"Fight with truth."
The creature circled her slowly.
Its black eyes gleamed with cruel amusement.
"You are unwanted."
"You are weak."
"You are alone."
Every sentence echoed the cruel voices Aria had heard throughout her life.
The voices of the pack.
The voices she had begun to believe.
Aria closed her eyes.
She remembered Lily handing her the tiny white flower.
She remembered Elder Rowan telling her she carried light.
She remembered Beta Gideon's quiet encouragement.
She remembered the warmth in Damon's eyes.
Most of all...
She remembered Lyra.
"You are not what they called you."
"You are what you choose to become."
Aria's breathing steadied.
She slowly stood.
The fear in her eyes faded.
"No."
The creature paused.
"I am not unwanted."
Its smile faltered.
"I am not forgotten."
The blue lantern suddenly burned brighter.
"I am not alone."
Silver light spread from the mark over her heart.
The creature shrieked and staggered backward.
Aria took one determined step forward.
"My name..."
Her voice rang through the cavern with newfound strength.
"...is Aria Nightshade."
"And I refuse to let fear decide who I am."
The silver light exploded from her body.
The creature screamed one final time before dissolving into countless black ashes.
Silence returned.
The cavern stopped shaking.
The blue lantern's flame burned brighter than ever before.
Far above...
The ancient stone beneath the arena glowed with silver veins.
Every elder rose from their seat.
Elder Cassian's weathered eyes widened.
"No..."
he whispered.
"She didn't defeat the Trial."
Another elder looked at him in astonishment.
"What do you mean?"
Cassian never looked away from the glowing cavern.
"She purified it."
The entire arena fell silent.
Not a single Luna...
Not a single Alpha...
Had accomplished that in over three hundred years.
