C8 Chapter 8 Rogues In The Pack
~Nathan~
Xander’s broad back leaned leisurely on the wall, his legs were crossed and his head tilted upwards in total nonchalance.
My gaze left his posture and landed on Elena’s peaceful face.
Streaks of tears were still evident on her cheeks and her eyes held large dark circles under them.
Xander had brought her back to the castle earlier, unconscious.
The Pack's healer has come and gone, assuring and reassuring us that she will be okay.
“She experienced a major shock,” Levanda's voice came echoing into my head.
Major shock? Did Elena see something in that restricted part of the Pack?
I wonder what happened to her and where she had gone to.
I hate myself for listening to her last night, I should have followed her even against her wish. Perhaps, if it be I had enough sense earlier I wouldn’t have let her fall into the snare of the Alpha.
Talking of the Alpha, I swerved my head in Xander’s direction and found his piercing eyes on me.
His eyes seemed to penetrate my soul and his dark aura hung close to my skin.
I coughed lightly and craned my head towards the closed door.
“You were with her last night, weren’t you?” Xander’s cold voice bounced at me.
I swallowed hard and faced his stern face.
“Yes, but she left when you turned down the dinner date,” I replied.
A dark cloud darted across his eyes as his lips pursed in guilt.
“Did this happen because of me?” he muttered.
Anger bubbled in me and I clenched my fist.
“Of course!” my calm voice raised into a snap.
He darted his lashes and smiled smugly.
“Are you yelling at me?”
A knot formed in my throat as I realized my mistake and quickly shook my head negatively.
“Forgive me, Alpha,” I bowed.
He sighed and glanced blankly at Elena.
I wish I could snatch her away from him and give her a better life, a life away from his, a life free of suffering. But unfortunately, Elena will never want that kind of life, she was never meant for that kind of life.
“If she wakes up, let me know,” Xander muttered, emotionlessly and trotted away.
I do wonder if he will ever have a feeling of love for someone. I wonder if he will learn to love and treat Elena with respect.
She has gone through a lot from me, I can’t stand and watch her go through the same trauma in the hands of a man who claimed he loves her.
He never loved her, I was fully aware of that the very day he proposed to her. I tried to stop Elena, I tried to stop her from taking a decision that would destroy her happiness but which mate will ever heed the words of her ex, especially, words that concern her happiness?
I walked closer to the bed and sat on the edge. My hands slowly and cautiously moved to her hair but stopped midway.
What if someone sees me? What if she wakes up and finds my hand in her hair?
These thoughts made me drop my hands on my lap.
She suddenly stirred, groaned lightly, and threw her head to the other side. Her long lashes fluttered and slowly gave way to a pair of beautiful pale chestnut eyes.
It landed on me and slowly shifted to other areas of the room.
“The…the monster?” she stuttered.
Is that a question?
“The monster, I saw a large monster,” she gibbered. I smiled as her soft voice drowned into my ears. She sounded like a little child telling a horror story she read in a book.
She knew I didn’t believe what she was saying so she frowned.
“I saw a monster!” she shrieked.
“Elena, calm down, I believe you,” I cooed.
“I know you don’t,” she muttered, shaking off my hands.
Her anger wasn’t that I didn’t believe her, her anger was that I touched her arm.
“Can you leave? I want to be left alone,” she said.
I stared at her in surprise. Elena has suddenly become authoritative and fearless. The meek, quiet girl wasn’t the one boldly staring into my pupils.
“Beta Nathan, I want to be left alone,” she repeated, her eyes sparkling.
I nodded, got up, and left the room.
I know why she wanted me to leave, she didn’t want me to see the tears, her greatest weakness.
“Beta, the Alpha wants to see you,” Gamma Phillip said as I strolled out of the room.
I faced him and nodded.
“I’ll see him later,” I muttered, I wasn’t ready for the Alpha’s constant prying eyes.
“Right now,” Gamma Phillip said and I swerved around quickly.
Did he just command me?
Phillip seemed to read my thoughts and quickly apologized.
“It is the Alpha’s command,” he bowed.
I sighed and followed the direction that led to Xander’s eerie chamber.
I pushed open the door and a cold chilly air hit my face, I sneezed and walked fully into the room.
Xander’s back was turned away from me, his eyes monitored the activities on the training field.
“Alpha?” I muttered.
He didn’t respond, neither did he bulge from his position.
“I received disturbing news last night,” he finally said after a long stretch of silence.
“What?” I muttered.
“It is so surprising that you’re beginning to fail in your duties,” he chuckled lightly.
“Me?”
“Did Elena’s presence stop you from carrying out your duties?”
I was beginning to get agitated at his taunts.
“What happened, Alpha?” I tried my possible best to keep my voice calm.
He slowly turned and fixed his sharp intimidating eyes on me.
“Rogues found their way across our borders, how is that possible, Nathan?”
A knot formed in my throat as I stared at him astonished.
That can’t be possible, if strong neighboring Pack Alphas cannot get through our borders then how can human rogues do?
If rogues have truly penetrated our borders, it means only one thing
Someone stronger than the Alpha and I have led them in.
