C25 Morning After the Storm
The rain had stopped sometime before dawn.
A quiet mist now floated between the mountains, soft and silver in the early morning light. The storm had washed the forest clean, leaving the air fresh and cold.
Inside the small cabin, everything was still.
Too still.
Arjun woke first.
Not because of a sound.
But because of the warmth resting on his chest.
Aisha.
She was still asleep, curled against him beneath the thin blanket they had found. One of her arms rested lazily across his stomach, her head tucked against his shoulder like she had claimed the place as hers.
Her hair had completely escaped the messy bun from yesterday.
Dark strands were spread across his chest and the wooden floor beneath them.
For a long moment, he didn’t move.
Didn’t even breathe too deeply.
Almost afraid that any movement would wake her.
He had faced situations far more dangerous than this.
But somehow… this felt different.
More fragile.
His gaze moved slowly across her face.
The dark circles beneath her eyes were still there, faint reminders of the long nights she spent working in remote clinics.
Her skin looked pale in the soft morning light.
Her lips slightly parted as she slept.
She wasn’t the kind of woman people turned their heads for in crowded cities.
She didn’t try to be.
No makeup.
No perfect hair.
Just simple clothes, messy buns, and tired eyes.
And yet…
To him she looked beautiful.
Not because she was flawless.
But because she was real.
His fingers gently brushed a loose strand of hair away from her cheek.
She shifted slightly in her sleep.
Moving closer without realizing it.
Her forehead now resting against his collarbone.
Arjun exhaled quietly.
A strange calm settled in his chest.
The kind of calm he rarely allowed himself to feel.
Then his thoughts returned.
Danger.
Enemies.
The men who had taken her.
His jaw tightened slightly.
Last night had been only the beginning.
Those men wouldn’t stop looking for him.
And now…
They knew about her.
That thought alone made something cold settle in his chest.
Aisha stirred softly.
Her eyelashes fluttered before she slowly opened her eyes.
For a moment she looked confused.
Still half asleep.
Then she realized where she was.
And more importantly—
Who she was lying on.
Her eyes widened slightly.
“Oh.”
Arjun raised an eyebrow.
“Good morning.”
She blinked a few times, trying to wake up fully.
“Did we… sleep here all night?”
“Yes.”
She groaned softly and buried her face into his shoulder.
“That’s embarrassing.”
His lips twitched faintly.
“Why?”
“Because I definitely fell asleep first.”
“You were exhausted.”
She peeked up at him again.
“And you just… stayed like this?”
“Yes.”
Her cheeks turned faintly pink.
“Well that’s… very gentlemanly of you.”
He didn’t answer.
Instead he studied her face again.
Trying to memorize the moment.
Because something in his chest told him moments like this wouldn’t last.
Aisha noticed the change in his expression.
“You’re thinking too much again.”
“Habit.”
She sighed and slowly sat up, wrapping the blanket loosely around herself.
The cool morning air slipped through the cabin.
For a moment they simply sat there.
Listening to the quiet forest outside.
Then she said softly—
“What happens now?”
Arjun didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes drifted to the small window where the mountains stretched endlessly beyond the mist.
Finally he spoke.
“You go back to your life.”
Aisha looked at him.
“Just like that?”
“Yes.”
Her fingers tightened slightly around the blanket.
“And you?”
His answer was simple.
“I disappear again.”
The words hung heavily in the small cabin.
Aisha tried to laugh it off.
“Well… at least this time you warned me first.”
But something in her voice sounded quieter.
More uncertain.
Arjun noticed.
But he didn’t say anything.
Because deep down he already knew the truth.
No matter how much he tried to stay away from her…
Something about this girl had already changed everything.
