C8 Morning in the Mountains
At some point during the night I must have fallen asleep.
The mountains were cold, the blanket warm, and the stars had slowly blurred together until everything faded into dreams.
When I woke up, the world felt very quiet.
Soft morning light was spreading across the mountains, turning the snow peaks golden.
For a moment I didn’t move.
Because something felt… different.
Warm.
Too warm.
Then I realized why.
My head was resting against something.
No.
Someone.
My cheek was pressed lightly against Arjun’s shoulder, and my hand had somehow drifted up near his neck while we slept.
For a second I completely froze.
I could feel his breathing.
Slow.
Warm.
And weirdly… minty. Like fresh morning air mixed with the faint smell of toothpaste.
My heart jumped.
Oh my god.
I jerked back quickly, sitting up.
But the sudden movement made him shift slightly.
Which meant—
He was awake.
Of course he was.
Embarrassment rushed straight to my face.
“Awake, officer?” I asked awkwardly.
Arjun didn’t answer with words.
He just opened one eye and lifted an eyebrow at me.
That was somehow worse.
The silence stretched between us.
Then suddenly a very bad idea entered my mind.
A mischievous one.
I leaned forward slightly and pinched his nose shut.
He squinted immediately.
“Aisha,” he said in a muffled voice. “Stop.”
“No.”
“Aisha.”
“You looked too calm.”
“I can’t breathe.”
“Exactly.”
He grabbed my wrist quickly.
Strong fingers wrapping around my hand.
“Stop,” he repeated.
I laughed and tried to escape his grip.
But Arjun was a soldier.
Escaping was clearly not an option.
He pulled my hand forward slightly, holding both of my wrists together.
Now I was leaning closer than I intended.
Way closer.
I tried to twist my hands free.
“Let go!”
“Stop struggling.”
“No!”
“If you keep moving—”
“What?”
He paused for a second.
Then the words slipped out accidentally.
“I’ll kiss you.”
Everything stopped.
Both of us froze.
His expression immediately changed like he regretted saying that.
But the damage was done.
Because those words did something strange to me.
My stomach dropped.
Not in fear.
Something else.
Something electric.
I looked up slowly.
And that’s when I noticed something terrifying.
We were extremely close.
So close that I could feel his breath against my lips.
So close that if either of us moved even a little…
Arjun’s grip loosened.
For a second he looked like he might let go and pull away.
But instead—
His hands moved behind my head.
Gentle.
Firm.
And suddenly his lips were on mine.
The kiss only lasted a second.
Maybe two.
Soft.
Careful.
Like he wasn’t sure if he should even be doing it.
Then he stopped.
Pulled back slightly.
And looked directly into my eyes.
Like he was asking something silently.
Asking if he should continue.
My heart was racing.
My mind was blank.
But somehow my answer came without words.
I closed my eyes.
Just slightly.
That was all the permission he needed.
This time the kiss was deeper.
Still gentle.
Still careful.
But longer.
Warm.
Real.
And it made my stomach feel like it had completely forgotten gravity.
When we finally stopped, I just stared at him.
Completely flushed.
Completely confused.
My brain trying to process what had just happened.
What the hell just happened?
Arjun didn’t say anything.
Instead he pulled me gently closer from behind, wrapping an arm around me and burying his face against the side of my neck.
The sudden closeness made my heart beat even faster.
But somehow it felt…
Peaceful.
We stayed like that quietly.
For a long time.
The sun slowly rising higher above the mountains.
Morning light spreading across the valley.
Neither of us moving.
Neither of us speaking.
Eventually the sun climbed high enough that the warmth reached us.
Reality slowly returned.
Which meant something else too.
Soon we would have to leave this place.
Leave the mountains.
Leave this moment.
My brain finally started working again.
Which meant the questions began.
“Did that actually happen?” I muttered quietly.
Arjun didn’t move.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Because it feels like a dream.”
“It wasn’t.”
I turned slightly to look at him.
“Then why did it happen?”
He sighed softly.
His voice low.
Calm.
That same deep commanding tone he always used.
But gentler now.
“You were there.”
“That is not an explanation.”
“It’s enough.”
I stared at the mountains again, still trying to understand everything.
Still wondering if any of this was real.
Still wondering how a simple travel story had somehow turned into this.
And Arjun just stayed quiet behind me.
Holding me calmly.
Like none of my ridiculous questions surprised him at all.
