C5 Bound by Chains

"You came back," he replied evenly, his tone revealing neither elation nor astonishment.

"I didn't come for you," Elena said, putting courage into her voice even though her throat hurt. "I came for my brother."

His lips moved, almost like a smile. "How convenient that saving him means giving up your own life."

Her hands were clasped at her sides. "Name it anything you want. "I'm not here to argue."

"Then you've made up your mind?" His voice was gentle and careful, but the weight behind it filled the room like fog.

Elena looked him in the eye, her breath short. "Yes."

There was a long silence between them. Damian looked at her like a predator watching its victim walk into its cage. His patience was scary; he took his time, as if he had all the time in the world to take her apart.

Her heart raced. The contract was on the desk between them, and the ink looked like new blood.

Damian pushed the papers across the desk with just one finger. "Then sign."

Elena looked at the pen next to it. As she reached for it, her hands shook because it was far heavier than it should have been.

Her voice broke. "Do you like this? "Watching me kill myself?"

He leaned forward a little, and his eyes shone. "It's not about having fun. This is how business works. "Your pain is just collateral."

She took a shaky breath and pressed the nib to the paper. Every stroke felt like chains tightening around her wrists, and every time her name was said, they got tighter.

She couldn't breathe on the last line. "It's over."

Damian's smile changed; it wasn't warm or kind, rather it was cold and harsh with delight. "Good."

The pen fell out of her hand and hit the desk with a bang. She could feel his eyes on her, savouring his win.

Elena carefully raised her chin, which made her shaking body stand up. Her eyes hurt, but her speech was clear.

"You can have my name, my signature, and even my body as part of this joke you call marriage. But you'll never have my love. I will never love you.

His smile went away for the first time. Damian stood up from his chair with calm, calculated steps. He was much taller than her as he walked the little distance between them.

Her heart raced, but she wouldn't back down.

He halted just a few inches away, and his presence was suffocating. His silence was scarier than anything he said, and his eyes were on her with an intensity that made her feel naked.

Elena's breathing got faster, but she stayed strong. His shadow covered hers, and the air between them was thick with danger and something far worse.

Elena stood still in front of the black stone desk, her chest rising and falling as she tried to hide the tremor in her voice. Damian got up slowly, like a wolf stretching after a long hunt.

He walked around her in silence, his shined sneakers clicking softly on the marble. She watched him carefully, her body tense as if she were ready for a hit.

"You've shown some spine," he said in a voice that was both soft and piercing. "I didn't think defiance would last after the ink dried."

She turned around and didn't let his presence behind her bother her. "You think that staying alive means giving up. I agreed for Julian, not for you.

He chuckled softly, and the sound made her nerves jump. "Ah, so you still believe in noble sacrifices." That will go away. Everything good does.

Her jaw got stiff. "I'll never forgive you for making me do this."

He leaned in closer as he walked past her shoulder, and his breath touched the curve of her neck. "Forgiveness?" His whisper sounded almost funny. "I didn't ask for forgiveness." "Only obedience."

Elena's heart raced, but she made herself smile. "Being obedient isn't in my nature."

Damian's steps slowed, and he stopped just inches from her, his height making her look small next to him. His eyes shone like steel that had been blown around in a hurricane. "Good. Fire is what I like. "Before it dies, it burns brighter."

Her hands shook at her sides, and her nails dug into her palms, yet she never looked away.

Damian looked at her, tilting his head as if he were judging prey that dared to show its teeth. His mouth turned slightly, not in a friendly way, but in a silent threat.

"Then I won't have to act like I love you."

The words hung in the air, weighty and unforgiving. Elena's breath caught, but she made herself chuckle. "You say that like it hurts me." Love was never part of this deal.

Damian got closer and closer till his shadow covered hers. His eyes moved over her face with sharp accuracy, stopping at her lips, her throat, and the way she was shaking.

"Love," he finally remarked, his voice chilly and measured, "makes people weak." And there is no room for weakness in my world.

She raised her chin stubbornly. "Then your world must be empty."

A flash of light went past his eyes and was gone as quickly as it came. He smirked in a mean, cutting way. "Maybe hollow." But power doesn't want comfort; it wants sacrifice.

His words cut through her, revealing the reality she had been too afraid to admit. She had given up her freedom and tied herself to a man who used cruelty like a crown.

She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. The realisation went deep, wrapping around her chest like freezing water.

Finally, Damian stepped back, and his grin grew. "Welcome to your new life, Mrs. Blackwood."

Elena's body stiffened, and her spirit screamed even though she didn't say anything. At that moment, she grasped the truth she was too afraid to say: she had just given her enemy her soul.
