Alice weighed her options. One on hand: If she agreed to this, her mother's bills would be settled, and Lilly would forgive her, but if Alexander found out about it, she would be done for. On the other hand, if she disagreed with this, Lilly might get upset with her and throw her out of the house, and then she would be left with nothing but a dying mother and two lady brothers
