C17 A Girl I like
Zhang Cuihua knew her husband hadn't arrived yet. Earlier, when Tan Lao Er returned from his carpentry work, he went to their room to change clothes. He mentioned that today's work was a bit messy, so he wanted to wash up before joining them.
"Mom, he's coming soon, no need to call him," Zhang Cuihua said, her mouth full, as she continued to pile food into her bowl with her chopsticks. Normally, her mother-in-law was stingy with oil, making the meals bland, but today, the food was flavorful, and she didn't want to leave the table.
Mrs. Wang, her mother-in-law, said irritably, "If you're going to eat, just eat. Don't pick through the whole dish. What about the rest of us?"
"I know, Mom," Zhang Cuihua replied, still searching the dish for meat. "It's not just for me; your eldest grandson loves this."
Mrs. Wang glanced at her belly, smirked, and said nothing more. She then served a few pieces of meat to her granddaughter sitting beside her. Her second daughter-in-law was always so self-centered, never thinking about others, not even her own daughter, Da Ya.
After the meal, Zhang Cuihua was so full she kept hiccuping. Mrs. Wang suggested her second son take his wife for a walk in the yard to help digest the food. Meanwhile, she took the dishes to the kitchen.
Mr. Tan called his eldest son over to sit down. "Son, can we talk?"
Tan Chenxi poured himself a glass of water. He was about to leave when his mother held his sleeve, signaling him to stay.
"You're not getting any younger, and it's time to think about settling down. Your mother and I want to know what you're thinking," Mr. Tan said.
"Dad, I don't have any plans right now. I'm not considering marriage at the moment."
As soon as he finished speaking, Mrs. Wang entered and chimed in, "That won't do. I want to be a grandmother."
Tan Chenxi couldn't help but laugh, "Mom, my younger brother already has Da Ya, and another one on the way. Whether I have kids or not..."
"Things are different now. You're the eldest, and if you hadn’t joined the army, your two younger brothers wouldn't have gotten married before you. Now that you're back, we need to talk about your marriage," Mrs. Wang pondered aloud. "Have you found a girl you like? If there's someone suitable, that would be perfect."
As Tan Chenxi heard this, he remembered the girl he met in the village, the one with a fox-like charm, and he couldn't help but smile.
Mrs. Wang exchanged a glance with her husband. Did their son have someone in mind?
When Tan Chenxi snapped back to reality, he noticed his mother's eyes shining with excitement. He chuckled, "Mom, don't worry about it just yet."
"Really? Whose daughter is she? I can ask around."
"There's no one in particular. I have some things to take care of. You and Dad should get some rest."
With that, Tan Chenxi got up and left.
Mrs. Wang sat there, her eyes brighter than usual. "Do you think he really likes someone?"
"Maybe we should wait and see. He probably has his own plans."
"No way, I have to find out."
...
"Big Sis, are these our new clothes?"
Momo and Junjun looked excitedly at the clothes laid out on the bed.
Gu Fanjin, already dressed in a simple outfit, handed them each a set. "Try them on and see if they fit."
"Okay."
Watching them carefully take the clothes to change, Gu Fanjin smiled. They had bought some fabric the day before, choosing simple colors. If they had taken it to a tailor for custom fitting, the labor costs would have been quite high.
