C6 Is She Dead?
"Jun, that's dirty," Fan quickly stopped him when she saw what he was doing, then turned to Mo. "Take your brother to wash his hands."
Yan Jun was a bit reluctant. The oil from the buns had dripped out while he was eating, and if he'd known his sister wouldn't let him lick his fingers, he would've been more careful. What a waste!
The siblings crouched outside to wash their hands, watching as their big sister carried the food into the dining room.
"Second sister, the buns are really tasty."
"Yeah, they're delicious."
Mo agreed. Even during holidays, their mom only made wild vegetable buns with just a tiny bit of meat, and she used to think those were already quite flavorful. But the bun she just had was the best thing she'd ever tasted.
As Fan finished setting the table, the two little ones came running back, their hands still dripping. She chuckled and handed them a clean towel to dry off. "Go ahead and eat."
"Wow, it smells amazing!" Yan Jun licked his lips and grabbed a piece of rib with his bowl.
By the end of the meal, all three siblings had greasy mouths, especially the younger two, who hadn't seen meat in who knows how long. Even Jun managed to eat several ribs and a small bowl of soup. Fan was worried they'd overeat and get sick, so she reluctantly stopped them.
Jun gazed longingly at the few remaining buns on the table, licking his lips, wanting just one more. Fan promised that whenever they wanted, she'd make more for them, and they'd reheat these buns for dinner.
The little guy nodded enthusiastically, and Fan ruffled his hair.
After the meal, Mo took her brother to help clean up, insisting that their sister needed more rest since she wasn't fully recovered.
Fan looked around at the drafty house, feeling a bit worried. She had some food stored away, but not much in terms of money or valuables. Still, it should be enough for emergencies.
In the apocalypse, those things are neither edible nor drinkable, not as practical as a bite of food. The few she had in her space were just there because they looked nice, and she grabbed a handful on a whim. If she'd known this would happen, she would have stuffed a bag full.
The house in front of her was practically falling apart, with walls made of mud mixed with straw, clearly showing their age. Who knows when her parents would come back? If winter came, they'd freeze for sure!
"Momo, our home..."
Before she could finish, there was a noise at the front door. The two little ones' faces changed, especially Junjun, who went pale and clung to his sister's clothes in fear.
"Sis, Grandma's here. She's definitely going to take our food."
Gu Momo whispered, her eyes filled with panic. The mean grandma was here? Seeing the kids so scared, Gu Fanjin was determined to see what kind of wicked woman could bully them like this!
"Momo, hide the buns and stay inside with Junjun. I'll call you when it's safe. Be ready."
"Sis, maybe we should just give her the buns. Your head just..."
"No way, we can't let her get away with this. Trust me."
After instructing them, Gu Fanjin stepped outside. Feng Qiuchun hadn't expected the girl to wake up so soon. She had shoved the girl the other day, causing her to hit her head on the doorframe. It had scared her, and that's why she came to see if the girl was dead.
