C8 A Rabbit Fell from the Sky

Momo timidly stepped forward, "Grandma, if you have to hit someone, hit me instead. Please don't hit my sister anymore. She just woke up from the last time you hit her. If you hit her head again, we might lose her."

Gu Fanjin sighed inwardly at Momo's perceptiveness, planning to treat the two younger ones to some extra chicken drumsticks that evening.

Before Mrs. Feng could respond, the onlookers began to murmur in shock.

"What? Mrs. Feng knocked someone out cold!"

"What kind of grudge could be that deep? That's way too harsh!"

"Isn't it just because the second family is easy to bully? Those three kids are pitiful enough, and this is their own grandmother. How could she do such a thing?"

"Exactly! If I were Xiue, I'd fight that old hag with everything I had!"

Xiue, the original mother, was smart and kind-hearted. If circumstances hadn't forced her hand, she wouldn't have left her three children at home.

Listening to the crowd's comments, Mrs. Feng's face twisted as if she'd swallowed a fly.

"Shut your mouths! Do you think you have the right to meddle in my family's affairs? Mind your own business!"

"Mrs. Feng, aren't you afraid that karma will strike your family down?" someone retorted with a sneer.

Mrs. Feng's chest heaved with anger as she gritted her teeth, "I just came to check on the kids. Do you really believe everything that comes out of their mouths?"

Gu Fanjin, holding the two younger ones close, watched Mrs. Feng with cold eyes from a spot where the crowd couldn't see.

Mrs. Feng turned her head and caught sight of this, startled by the intensity in the young girl's gaze. It was as if she was staring down a predator.

Releasing the two little ones, Gu Fanjin approached Mrs. Feng and whispered in a voice only the two of them could hear, "Aren't you afraid that if I died because of you, I'd come back as a vengeful spirit to haunt you?"

Feng was taken aback, suddenly feeling a chill down her spine. The person in front of her, Gu Fanjin, was acting so out of character. That look in her eyes just now, and the way she was speaking—Feng would never have dared to talk back to her before.

"Who... who do you think you are?"

Seeing that her words had the desired effect, Gu Fanjin turned to the crowd, her face showing a hint of sorrow. "To be honest, we did have some meat. Momo and Junjun saw me get knocked out by Grandma, so they cried and went up the mountain to find herbs for me. Up there, a wild rabbit ran into a tree and died, so they brought it back."

"How convenient," Feng said, regaining her composure. Seeing Gu Fanjin's shadow reassured her that the girl had just been trying to scare her. "We've never seen a rabbit just deliver itself to us!"

The crowd hesitated. It was true their village was near the mountains, and some families hunted there, but they'd never heard of a rabbit just showing up like that.

Feng was about to speak when suddenly, a wild rabbit seemed to come out of nowhere, landing with a thud right in front of everyone.

"..."

The rabbit twitched a couple of times and then lay still.

"This..."

Even Feng was stunned, and the onlookers were equally baffled.

Gu Fanjin blinked. Did a rabbit just fall from the sky?

"Maybe it's a sign from above," someone in the crowd suggested, and everyone quickly nodded in agreement. It was a gift from the heavens!

Gu Fanjin was grateful that this was an old-fashioned place where people were still quite simple and trusting. Just like that, a rabbit falling from the sky convinced everyone of Gu Fanjin's story.
