C12 And You Still Have the Face to Come Here
Ann Xiaomin hurried back to the Hsu family home. Now known as Hsu Yaying, she smoothly entered the inner hall of the Hsu residence. The staff greeted her, but Mr. Hsu wasn't home. As soon as Mrs. Hsu saw Ann, she started to scold her.
"How dare you show your face here? Pretending to be our Yaying and then running off with your brother-in-law—what were you thinking? What did I tell you before? You even tried to break the contract and run away. We signed an agreement, and if you're exposed as an imposter, I can have you locked up for life. Do you believe that?"
Knowing she was in the wrong, Ann didn't dare talk back, no matter how much Mrs. Hsu's words stung. Besides, she was here to ask about her mother's whereabouts and couldn't afford to anger Mrs. Hsu.
"Mrs. Hsu, please calm down. I know I was wrong. Let's not get upset."
Ann had considered telling Mrs. Hsu how bizarre Gu Junbai was, but decided against it; it wouldn't help. Mrs. Hsu sat on the sofa, sipping the tea a servant handed her. Seeing Ann's sincere apology, her demeanor softened slightly, though the disdain in her eyes hadn't changed since their first meeting.
"Good, as long as you know you were wrong. Use your head next time. If you damage Yaying's reputation again, it won't end here."
"Don't worry, Mrs. Hsu. I haven't seen my mom in days and I really want to check on her and see how she's doing. Could you arrange for me to see her?" Ann Xiaomin asked, trying to be persuasive.
"Is that so you can take her away again?" Mrs. Hsu replied with a condescending tone.
"Of course not. You mentioned we have a contract. I wouldn't make the same mistake twice. I just genuinely want to see my mom. Mrs. Hsu, you've been someone's child, and now you're a mother yourself. You should understand how I feel. Besides, seeing my mom would motivate me to play the role of Miss Hsu to the best of my ability."
This mix of reasoning, emotion, and a hint of threat finally 'convinced' Mrs. Hsu, and Ann Xiaomin was allowed to see her mother after many days.
However, Mrs. Hsu was quite petty. She was worried that if Ann Xiaomin got close to Gu Xiurann and no longer needed the Hsu family, she might try to take her mother away. So, from the moment they left, Ann was blindfolded until they reached the private hospital, ensuring she wouldn't know her mother's location.
After about an hour's drive, Ann was guided out of the car, into the elevator, and down a hallway to the hospital room, where her blindfold was finally removed.
Ann's mother was still unconscious, with an IV in her hand and an oxygen tube in her nose. The erratic lines on the heart monitor showed that she was still alive.
Ann Xiaomin had witnessed those moments when her mother's heartbeat nearly flatlined. Although her mother hadn't woken up, Ann felt relieved to see her condition now. Holding her mother's hand, she chatted about her own life and then asked for the doctor to get an update on her mother's health. Only after learning that her condition was stable and improving did Ann leave.
Instead of returning to Prosperous Garden, Ann went back to the apartment she used to rent. In the bustling city where space is at a premium, even the rent in less desirable areas was shockingly high. Ann shared the apartment with others, and when she arrived, her roommate, Luh Xinxin, who kept a night owl schedule, was just waking up.
