C29 Leaking
Dr. Yang Chuxia finally breathed a sigh of relief. As long as it wasn't brain death, the Healing Chamber could bring anyone back to life! After a grueling night, she was completely worn out.
"Okay! Dr. Yang Chuxia, I'm Kathleen Fernman, the chief nurse of the Alliance Space Rescue Team. You can call me Kathleen. You look exhausted, and it's a few hours' flight back to headquarters. Why don't I show you to a place where you can rest first?"
After sealing the Healing Chamber, a nurse with long curly blonde hair and striking features, who appeared to be in her late twenties, kindly addressed the visibly fatigued Yang Chuxia.
Yang Chuxia nodded and responded, "Thank you, Kathleen."
Kathleen flashed a bright smile, her white teeth gleaming. "Don't mention it! I'll let you know as soon as General Edi wakes up."
Having narrowly escaped death and performed surgery on Edi in one night, Yang Chuxia was not just physically drained but also mentally exhausted. After bidding Kathleen farewell, she collapsed into bed and fell fast asleep.
When she woke up next, she had already arrived at headquarters.
It was Sean who came to rouse her. A refreshed Sean opened the door to find Yang Chuxia blinking sleepily, looking utterly endearing. He chuckled and teased, "Hey there, sleepyhead, wake up! We've made it to headquarters!"
"Sean, the dashing marshal!" Yang Chuxia rubbed her eyes and exclaimed, "We're here already? How long have I slept? And how's the general?"
"You've been out for nearly six hours, and the general is doing fine. He sent me to tell you that he's inviting you to be his dance partner tonight!" Sean said, his expression feigning deep sorrow.
"I thought he was just making a token gesture, which would have left me free to invite the most formidable Dr. Yang from the Flying Eagle Combat Group to be my dance partner! Alas... it seems I'm destined to watch rather than dance."
Yang Chuxia burst into laughter, playfully poking at Sean's waist and teasing, "Am I really that fierce? You make me sound like some kind of warrior woman!"
Sean caught Yang Chuxia's hand in his, laughing softly, "You may appear delicate on the outside, but inside, you're truly incomparable!"
A soft cough echoed down the corridor, prompting both individuals to turn. There stood General Edi, his expression unreadable as his military uniform accentuated his presence, making him appear as a drawn sword, sharp and formidable, with an aura as cold as iron.
Yang Chuxia awkwardly retracted her finger and addressed him, "General Edi..."
Edi cast a brief, indifferent glance at Yang Chuxia and said, "Let's move on. Today's meeting is postponed until tomorrow, but the Alliance's annual gala will proceed as planned. You have the whole afternoon to chat, so there's no need for lengthy discussions here." With that, he turned and strode out.
Sean and Yang Chuxia followed, a bit awkwardly.
The Alliance Headquarters was situated on the Latin Colonized Star, a place blessed with abundant sunshine and rain, and a pleasant climate. It was not only the largest planet in the Alliance but also the most flourishing colony! Skyscrapers towered amidst lush greenery.
Upon disembarking from the Mothership, soldiers brought over an aircraft and handed it to Sean, saluting and greeting Edi.
For Yang Chuxia, this was her inaugural visit to Latin Star. The bustling streets and architecture, teeming with people, evoked fond memories of her life on Mother Planet.
It wasn't until Sean boarded the aircraft and Edi called out to her that she snapped back to reality. Once seated inside, Sean piloted the aircraft towards the headquarters.
Edi sat beside her in the backseat. Noticing her silence, he arched an eyebrow and inquired, "Something on your mind?"
Yang Chuxia forced a smile and shook her head, "No, it's just that the vibrancy of Latin Star took me by surprise!" Yet her face betrayed not shock, but a hint of melancholy.
Edi pressed his lips together and refrained from probing further. Since performing surgery on him, Yang Chuxia had gradually shed her fear of his stern demeanor and lost herself in childhood memories.
It was only when Edi and Sean gave her puzzled looks that she realized the aircraft had already landed in front of the Alliance Headquarters.
Major General Cliff Reg of the Military Intelligence Bureau, accompanied by his aide-de-camp Hansen, approached them.
Edi took a quick glance at Yang Chuxia, who was turning her head to the side to wipe away tears, and instructed Sean, "Please take Dr. Yang to rest. If anyone comes looking for you, tell them you won't leave without my permission."
Sean saluted Cliff before approaching Yang Chuxia, speaking gently, "Let's go, Chuxia."
After giving Edi a hearty hug, Cliff stepped back and curiously watched Sean and Yang Chuxia, now a good distance away, "Did you make Dr. Yang cry?"
Edi gave him a cool look and replied, "Your concern should be for your own subordinates. You're overstepping."
Hansen, standing next to Cliff, couldn't help but chuckle at the exchange.
Cliff shrugged, conceding, "Okay, I'll mind my own business," and proceeded to escort Edi to his office.
Five minutes later.
Cliff's attractive secretary brought Edi a cup of plain hot water.
Edi frowned at the cup before him.
Cliff chuckled, resting his fist against his lips, "Your health is just recovering. It's best to avoid stimulating drinks like coffee, tea, or alcohol for now. Please make do with some hot water."
Edi took a sip and then inquired, "What's the deal with those enemy battleships that ambushed us out of nowhere?"
Cliff's smile faded as he placed a file in front of Edi, gesturing for him to take a look. "It wasn't just you. Nearly all the commanders attending the high-level military conference were targeted.
"This includes Major General Jenny Antonia, commander of the Celestial Moon Combat Group. She was fortunate to be among the first attacked, so the Rescue Team was able to get to her quickly. But there were others less fortunate than you, commanders who lost their lives..."
Edi's expression darkened, realizing the attacks were due to a leak of their movements.
"...Twenty-six combat group commanders, including yourself, were ambushed, with seven making the ultimate sacrifice. Twelve were rescued with varying degrees of injury, and eight were unscathed thanks to timely aid. The delayed response was because the Rescue Team had already neutralized the enemy forces."
After reviewing the document, Edi frowned and concluded, "This suggests there's a mole in the Alliance leaking our military routes?"
Cliff nodded, "We're looking into it now. It seems they were lying in wait along the route and launched their assault as soon as you showed up. The enemy managed to hack into the Sky Eye System we installed on various planets along the space route. Our technicians, who were sluggish to catch on, failed to detect the breach. They're currently detained for questioning."
