C26 You Want to Murder Your Own Husband!?
Instinctively, Zhang Chen rolled to the side.
Turning back, he saw Lin Zhiqing, already dressed, standing at the bathroom doorway, her expression icy.
A fruit knife was clutched in her hand.
Zhang Chen's eyes widened in shock as he blurted out, "Have you lost your mind?"
Tears glistened in Lin Zhiqing's eyes.
"Zhang Chen, I'm going to kill you!"
With those words, she charged at him again, the fruit knife slashing through the air without mercy.
Zhang Chen, in a panic, stumbled backward.
Thankfully, the room was shrouded in darkness, the lights off and curtains drawn.
Lin Zhiqing moved swiftly, fury burning within her.
Her eyes seethed with hatred.
Zhang Chen dashed to the far side of the sofa and yelled, "Stop right there!"
His shout jolted Lin Zhiqing into stillness.
Seizing the moment, Zhang Chen blurted out, "Are you out of your mind? I saved your life, and this is how you repay me?"
"Just because you saved me, you think you can undress me? You think that gives you the right to do vile things to me?" Lin Zhiqing sneered, her voice laced with anger.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she spoke.
Despair had taken root in Lin Zhiqing's heart, now filled with nothing but remorse.
"What have I done?" Zhang Chen protested, exasperated. "I didn't even lay a finger on you..."
But Lin Zhiqing interrupted with a roar, "Then why did you take off my clothes?"
"Hear me out!" Zhang Chen's voice thundered in desperation.
Lin Zhiqing froze.
Zhang Chen hurriedly explained, "You were drugged, do you understand?"
She nodded.
"It was Lee Junyi, wasn't it?"
Another nod from Lin Zhiqing, her thoughts scrambled by Zhang Chen's outburst.
"Do you remember anything else?" he pressed.
In anguish, Lin Zhiqing shook her head and whispered, "All I recall is Lee Junyi lunging at me."
"That's right!" Zhang Chen exclaimed, relieved that she remembered. "Lee Junyi drugged you, and then he tried to..."
In the middle of his explanation, Zhang Chen found himself having to backtrack. "Then, at the crucial moment, I arrived. I chased Lee Junyi off and carried you into the bathroom..."
"You!"
Lin Zhiqing was incensed at his words!
"Shut up! Let me finish!" Zhang Chen bellowed, then hurriedly continued, "I splashed you with cold water, which helped a lot, and after that, you fell asleep."
"I carried you to the bed and had the waitress help you out of your clothes."
With that off his chest, Zhang Chen felt a weight lift from his shoulders.
Lin Zhiqing stood there, dumbfounded.
Two critical pieces of information rang in her ears: Zhang Chen had saved her, and a waitress had undressed her.
For some inexplicable reason, this knowledge eased Lin Zhiqing's mind considerably.
After a long pause, she finally lifted her head and asked, "Is what you're saying true?"
Zhang Chen nodded with a sense of resignation. "Yes, the waitress can vouch for it. You can always check the security footage."
"You held me?" Lin Zhiqing's voice was icy once more.
"Yes..."
Zhang Chen started to respond instinctively but, sensing her tone, he felt even more helpless. "You were nearly choking me to death..."
"You were in such distress, I couldn't just leave you there..."
A contemplative glint flickered in Lin Zhiqing's eyes.
"Believe it or not, you're okay now."
With that, Zhang Chen headed for the door.
"Stop right there!"
Her icy command echoed again.
Turning around with a sigh, Zhang Chen asked, "What now? I went through all that trouble to save you, and you still want to finish me off?"
Lin Zhiqing froze.
She didn't even know why she had called out to Zhang Chen. After much deliberation, she could only think of one reason.
She was scared.
"I'm hungry, find me something to eat," she finally said after a long silence.
Zhang Chen paused, then rolled his eyes in exasperation. "Wait here."
With that, he turned and left the room.
Lin Zhiqing switched on the lights and collapsed onto the sofa, her eyes reflecting a storm of emotions.
But it didn't take long for Lin Zhiqing to collect her thoughts.
She opened the door, checked for Zhang Chen's absence, and silently made her way to the elevator.
Twenty minutes later, Zhang Chen emerged from the elevator, balancing a tray of food, and made his way back to his room.
Upon entering, he immediately noticed Lin Zhiqing seated on the sofa, her expression as icy as ever.
Zhang Chen's mouth quirked involuntarily.
That look always sent a shiver down his spine.
"Time for dinner."
He announced, setting the food down on a nearby table with deliberate care.
Lin Zhiqing moved closer and began to eat with chopsticks.
Zhang Chen watched, momentarily taken aback. How long had she been starving?
Before long, Lin Zhiqing finished her meal and laid down the chopsticks.
Zhang Chen sat beside her, silently observing, a peculiar sensation stirring within him.
Here they were, just the two of them, and yet, nothing transpired.
