C54 You Hit the Tree?
Zhang Chen couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this situation than met the eye. If the story held any truth, the manager would have called the police long ago.
Yet, the manager hadn't done so.
After a brief pause, Zhang Chen asked, "What exactly did you hit?"
The woman with green hair replied sheepishly, "A tree."
"You hit a tree with your car? Do you even have a driver's license?" Zhang Chen's eyes bulged as he asked, incredulous.
He was reminded once again of the terror a female driver could invoke—the last incident involved Lee Fengqin.
"No, it's not that. Somehow, the steering wheel just wasn't responding," the green-haired woman explained awkwardly.
Zhang Chen couldn't help but smile.
These details only deepened his suspicions.
After mulling it over, Zhang Chen looked up and demanded, "Where's the car? I want to see it."
The manager's brow furrowed, and he retorted angrily, "What's there to see? Are we blind? Plus, all your friends saw what happened!"
Zhang Chen let out a cold laugh and turned to the green-haired woman and her companions, "Did you all see it?"
He didn't need to prompt them any further in this situation.
Yet, the group nodded guiltily, "We saw it."
Zhang Chen nearly choked on his own frustration.
Were these people lacking in common sense?
Even Lin Miao couldn't bear it, closing her eyes in a display of utter contempt.
A smug smirk curled at the manager's lips as he taunted, "What do you have to say for yourself now?"
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Zhang Chen flashed a wry smile and pressed on, "If I'm going to pay up, shouldn't I at least see the car?"
The manager shook his head, "Sorry, we've already sent it for repairs. But if you really want to see it, we can show you another car."
Zhang Chen's frown deepened.
After another moment of thought, he inquired, "Is there a surveillance video, at least?"
The manager's smile was a clear no, as he shook his head again.
Zhang Chen was nearly certain now—something was definitely amiss.
Quick to recover, Zhang Chen chuckled and said, "If there's no evidence, how can you prove she was the one who hit the car?"
The manager's frown turned into a scowl as he shot back, "All of us were witnesses! Are you trying to deny it now?"
Zhang Chen remained unfazed and said with a dismissive smile, "Show us the damaged car or the surveillance footage. We don't have time to play games with you."
He finished speaking and shot Lin Miao a knowing glance.
Lin Miao paused, then quickly gestured to them.
The green-haired woman and her companions were bewildered.
Could they really just walk away after vandalizing a car?
Regardless, they had no choice but to trust Zhang Chen now.
With determination, they made their way toward Zhang Chen, wondering if their plan would succeed.
The manager's eyes blazed with fury as he barked, "Playing the fool, are you? Stay right there!"
His command was followed by a swarm of employees closing in on Zhang Chen and his group.
Zhang Chen halted, his brow furrowing.
Panic and fear washed over Lin Miao and the others.
"This is all your fault! Why did you try to leave? How can you be so irresponsible? You hit a car and now you want to run off? You're asking for trouble!"
"Now what? Is he actually helping us or just making things worse?"
"I'm so frustrated!"
The group erupted into a flurry of chatter, with even the green-haired woman voicing her exasperation.
Zhang Chen's eyebrow quirked, his lips curling into a sardonic smile.
He remained calm, continuing to wait.
Lin Miao bit her lip, her eyes darting around anxiously.
The employees closed in, ready to confront them.
After a tense moment, the green-haired woman finally stepped forward. "Manager, I'll pay for the damages! Please, no violence."
She spoke while protectively covering her vividly made-up face, seemingly terrified of ruining her looks.
"Fine, step forward," the manager said with a sneer of satisfaction.
A glimmer of relief flashed in the green-haired woman's eyes as she and the others hurriedly made their escape.
Though earning 300,000 was a daunting task, she believed she could manage it with her looks.
But a ruined face would be a disaster.
The thought alone sent shivers down her spine, and she led the other girls out of the crowd.
Lin Miao, her jaw set with resolve, attempted to follow, but Zhang Chen's grip on her arm held her back.
"What are you doing?"
Lin Miao couldn't contain her fury as she shouted, her eyes blazing with anger.
She had summoned Zhang Chen to see if he could cough up the money, but she never anticipated he would put her in such an awkward position!
Zhang Chen replied icily, "From now on, mind your own business and stay out of things that don't concern you."
At his words, the green-haired woman and her companions couldn't hide their scornful grins.
With the situation having escalated to this point, did Zhang Chen really think he could just walk away?
