C13 New Vice President

"Why?"

A flicker of emotion crossed the man's eyes. "First, to ensure we had a connection, and second, if you sensed something was off, he could immediately pin all the blame on me."

Otherwise, why would the Xi family be so unafraid of exposing the truth today? They weren't worried about the Tang family finding out at all. The Xi family held a much higher status than the Tang family now. If it weren't for the unbreakable marriage agreement set by the older generation, Xi Yan would have likely broken it long ago.

He was confident in revealing this because he knew the Tang family wouldn't hold him accountable. Even if it did provoke their anger, Xi Yan could easily shift all the blame onto Xi Pei, sparking a conflict between Xi Pei and the Tang family. For him, it was a win-win situation.

Tang Yan, being the true heiress of the Tang family, had heard her share of scandalous stories in high society. But hearing Xi Pei's explanation made her realize just how cunning Xi Yan was. Her gaze toward Xi Pei grew more sympathetic.

"High society really is full of drama. It seems Xi Yan is determined to go after you. But don't worry, the Tang family isn't particularly fond of me either, so I won't spill the truth. We're in the same boat now. If anything happens, I'll back you up."

The night was quiet, but the woman's voice was light and resolute. In the darkness, he glanced in Tang Yan's direction, and after a long pause, he finally spoke.

"Okay."

I slept really well that night. The next morning, when Tang Yan went downstairs for breakfast, sure enough, Xi Pei was already there, dressed and waiting. She glanced at Mrs. Zhang, who was busy in the kitchen, and greeted her with a cheerful smile.

"Morning, honey!"

Xi Pei almost choked on his coffee at the sound of her calling him that. He gave Tang Yan a long look before responding.

"Yeah, morning."

Mrs. Zhang's cooking was quite good, and since the breakfast was free, Tang Yan made sure to eat her fill. Satisfied, she stood up.

"Oh, by the way, I have to go to work today. I won't be back until evening."

Xi Pei nodded and got up as well. "Me too," he paused, then added, "I'll pick you up after work."

Noticing Mrs. Zhang coming out, Tang Yan quickly wrapped her arms around Xi Pei's neck and stood on tiptoe to plant a kiss on his cheek.

"Thanks, honey!"

Xi Pei was momentarily taken aback; she seemed to call him that quite naturally. He drove her to the office building, and after they exchanged contact information, Tang Yan headed inside.

Tang Yan studied design in college and smoothly landed a job at a well-known jewelry brand as a jewelry designer. Thanks to her hard work and talent, she became the team leader of a jewelry project within a year.

"Hey, Team Leader, you're here! Yesterday, the manager mentioned you took a day off. Were you not feeling well?"

As soon as Tang Yan stepped into the office, her team member, Lee Weiwei, greeted her. Little did they know, Tang Yan had taken the day off to get married.

"It was just some personal stuff at home. What were you all talking about just now?"

Another team member, Chen Tao, pulled up a chair and leaned in, speaking in a hushed, conspiratorial tone.

"Team Leader Tang, do you remember the last assistant manager who resigned because she was pregnant? Today, the manager said they're sending a new assistant manager our way, so we should all be prepared."

Tang Yan found it odd.

"Isn't that pretty standard?"

"It's not that simple!" Lee Weiwei glanced around before whispering in her ear, "Rumor has it that the new assistant manager is someone special. They say she's the boss's daughter and just recently graduated!"
