"It seems having you marry into the Xi family in my place was the right choice. You look like you're doing well, so I assume your newlywed life with Mr. Xi is quite pleasant?"
Though Tang Li was smiling, her beautiful eyes gleamed with mocking malice.
Tang Yan's face turned pale for a moment. She knew Tang Li was deliberately mocking her about the arranged marriage, so she quietly clenched her fists, maintaining her composure.
"Thanks to you, Vice Director Tang, it's been alright."
It was actually much better than she had expected. Although Xi Pei was quiet and reserved, he was considerate and attentive at times, which oddly made Tang Yan feel at ease.
Not expecting this response, Tang Li scrutinized Tang Yan's expression, wondering if she was just putting on a brave face or truly unaware she had married the wrong person.
Regardless of the truth, the fact remained that she was now married to Xi Pei.
Thinking about Xi Pei being an illegitimate child, Tang Li let out a cold laugh.
"As long as you're satisfied, there are plenty of good days ahead for you! Don't forget our deal; you better take good care of the Xi family for me."
Her words made it clear she didn't see Tang Yan as a person, but rather as a tool to be used at will.
Yet, even hearing such words, Tang Yan's expression remained unchanged.
"As long as you keep your promise to me, I won't go back on my word."
Her calm demeanor wasn't what Tang Li wanted to see.
"Aren't you curious why I came here just to take over your project?"
Tang Yan slowly looked up, hearing her haughty voice ring out, "I just want you to know that even if I deliberately took your project, as long as I want it, no matter how important it is to you, you'll have to hand it over to me. Tang Yan, that's the difference between us!"
Tang Li always looked down on Tang Yan. Her mother came from a prominent family, so naturally, she despised someone like Tang Yan, who she saw as nothing more than a pretty face with a sick mother, belonging to the lowest rung of society.
As the favored daughter, Tang Li had no interest in acknowledging Tang Yan as her sister and never mentioned having such a sibling to outsiders.
Knowing these words were meant to humiliate her, Tang Yan had long mastered the art of remaining unfazed.
"Project assignments are made by the company. As the Vice Director and the daughter of Director Tang, the whole company is under your family's control, so you can do as you please. I have no objections."
It was like throwing a punch and hitting nothing but air, and Tang Li couldn't help but frown.
"You—"
"I've finished handing over all my tasks. If there's nothing else, I'll be heading out," Tang Yan said, turning to leave the office.
Instead of returning to her desk, she went straight to the company's restroom. Staring at her slightly pale reflection in the mirror, Tang Yan splashed cold water on her face, forcing herself to calm down.
"It's okay, Tang Yan. Let her say whatever she wants. As long as Mom gets better, that's all that matters. There will be other opportunities at work, even if this project doesn't pan out. You can prove yourself!"
She rubbed her face vigorously until some color returned to her cheeks. Feeling a bit more relaxed, Tang Yan gave herself a little pep talk in the mirror, which lifted her spirits.
However, when she returned to the office, she heard another piece of news.
