C5 Son of a Btch
The rain outside had stopped at some point, but the damp air still left a lingering sense of unease. Tang Yan sat in the car, wearing the most expensive outfit she had brought with her. After all, she was playing the role of Tang Li, the Tang family's heiress. If she wore her usual plain white T-shirt and jeans, her cover might be blown quickly.
Since getting into the car, the man beside her had been engrossed in his phone, showing no intention of making conversation. However, to gather information about the Xi family and avoid any slip-ups, Tang Yan decided to speak up.
"Who are we meeting when we get back, and what should I say?"
At her words, Xi Pei looked up. For a brief moment, Tang Yan thought she saw a deep gloom and danger in his eyes, but it was gone in a flash, making her think she imagined it.
Xi Pei shook his head. "No need. You don't have to say anything."
After all, everyone knew the truth about this marriage. Going back was just to be the subject of others' amusement.
But Tang Yan didn't know that. She thought saying nothing would be even stranger.
"But they're your family, and now that I'm married to you, I'll inevitably have to interact with them. Why don't you tell me about the Xi family members so I can be prepared?"
Her eagerness made Xi Pei narrow his eyes. Was she trying to quickly build a rapport with the Xi family?
Xi Pei's eyes flashed with a hint of sharpness as he thought about those insincere people. Tang Yan wanted to say more, but Xi Pei's casual remark stopped her in her tracks.
"Still have the energy to talk after last night?"
Tang Yan instantly froze, her cheeks heating up rapidly. How could he bring that up so nonchalantly?
Embarrassment rendered her speechless. Frustrated, she turned to look out the window, deciding not to concern herself with the Xi family's affairs anymore.
Soon, the car pulled into an estate. The European-style architecture was both vintage and luxurious—this was the Xi family, the largest family in the city.
"Let's go."
After getting out of the car, Tang Yan followed closely behind Xi Pei into the Xi home. The spacious and bright hall was filled with people, presumably family members. Hearing the commotion, they all turned to look.
As soon as she stepped inside, Tang Yan sensed something was off. As Xi Yan's wife, she should naturally be welcomed and respected upon returning with him to the family home. Yet, the people in the hall merely scrutinized them with unfriendly eyes.
"Father, I'm back."
Sitting at the head of the main room was Xi Pei's father, Xi Chuyang. Strangely, his attitude towards Xi Pei was also quite indifferent.
“Is this the daughter from the Tang family?”
Tang Yan, feeling tense, stepped forward to greet them. “Father, I am Tang Li.”
To outsiders, she indeed appeared to be Tang Li. Xi Chuyang nodded but said nothing further.
The strange atmosphere made Tang Yan increasingly uneasy. Suddenly, she heard someone speak up.
“A child born out of wedlock marrying the eldest daughter of the Tang family is quite the stroke of luck! You better treat her well. If you upset her and she complains to the Tang family, don't expect us to back you up!”
The speaker was Xi Yan's second uncle, who was looking at them with a mocking expression.
His words were odd, and Tang Yan couldn't help but frown. A child born out of wedlock?
That didn't seem right. She remembered that Tang Yan had married Xi Yan, the head of the Xi family. How could anyone dare speak to Xi Yan like that?
