C9 Gifts
Tang's mother gently stroked her daughter's face, fully aware that her daughter was trying to comfort her with those words.
"Don't try to fool me, sweetheart. I know there's an arrangement between our family and the Xi family. Did your father make you agree to this? My dear child, how can you be happy marrying someone you've never met? It's my fault for putting you in this position."
As she spoke, Tang's mother choked up, and Tang Yan's eyes filled with tears. Her mother was incredibly perceptive and understood why she was suddenly able to receive treatment in the hospital. It was all because her daughter had sacrificed her own happiness for it.
Tang Yan fought back the urge to cry, forcing a smile onto her face. "Mom, I'm not lying to you. The person I'm marrying is really good to me. He—"
Before she could finish, the door to the hospital room suddenly opened. Xi Pei's tall figure appeared in the doorway. Tang Yan was taken aback, but Xi Pei walked in confidently, carrying bags of gifts and nutritional supplements, which he placed on the cabinet nearby.
"Hello, ma'am. Nice to meet you. I'm Xi Pei, Yan's husband. I forgot to bring the gifts earlier, so I asked Yan to come up and keep you company first. Sorry for being late."
Yan was completely taken aback. When did he prepare these gifts? And those things he said—he hadn't discussed them with her at all!
Yan's mother was momentarily stunned, then began to scrutinize Xi Pei carefully. She had to admit, Xi Pei had an impeccable appearance. His broad shoulders and slim waist were complemented by the suit he wore, giving him a mature and steady look. Coupled with his deliberately polite and upright demeanor, he really seemed like the real deal.
A smile immediately appeared on Yan's mother's face. "Oh, I see. Yan, you should have told me Xi was coming along. You let him carry all those things by himself. You shouldn't do that in the future."
Xi Pei smiled warmly. "Mom, don't blame Yan. I insisted on carrying everything myself. They're heavy, and I couldn't bear to let Yan lift a finger."
Hearing this, Yan's mother smiled with satisfaction. From her perspective, Xi Pei was impeccable in both appearance and manners. Most importantly, he knew how to care for her daughter, and that alone made Yan's mother very pleased.
She was ill and didn't want to become a burden to her daughter. If Yan married into a good family, Yan's mother could be completely at ease.
"Yan, why are you just standing there? Get Xi a chair," Yan's mother urged.
Yan's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Yan?"
Just a few words and a bunch of gifts, and her mom was completely won over by Pei. She even turned around and said she was being silly.
Yan shot a resentful glance at Pei. To appease her mom, she resigned herself to fetching a chair for him.
For the next half hour, Yan felt invisible, watching as her mom and Pei chatted happily. She had been worried Pei might slip up, but seeing her mom laughing non-stop, Yan gave up resisting.
"Alright, alright, you young folks are busy, and I should get some rest. Yan, come here."
Finally feeling acknowledged, Yan quickly walked over, only to be surprised when her mom suddenly placed her hand in Pei's.
Her mom spoke earnestly.
"My health isn't great, so I can't visit you often. But now that you're married, you need to live well together. If there are any issues, communicate properly. If things don't work out, come to me, and I'll help you sort it out."
