C19 Scared Out of Her Wits

“Xiaotong,” Zuo Yuliang asked, “have you been thinking about me?”

Yu Xiaotong had not been able to get Zuo Yuliang out of her head ever since she came back, but she could not admit this. They only had one meal together and before this, nothing else. How could she go all out and say that she was thinking about him?

After a long pause, Yu Xiaotong whispered, “No!”

“Is that so?” Zuo Yuliang said, “I admit, I am very disappointed. How come you don’t miss me?”

“I… I... “ Yu Xiaotong was at a loss at how to express herself, so she casually said, “I forgot.”

“You forgot?” Zuo Yuliang was laughing on the other side of the phone. “It’s likely that I have not left a deep impression on you - that’s why it may have slipped your mind to think of me. It’s okay, from now on, I’ll do my best to make you remember me!”

Yu Xiaotong could only smile shyly. She did not say anything.

“Alright, Xiaotong, go to bed now! Good night!”

“Good night!”

That night because of the phone call Yu Xiaotong slept very late.

The next afternoon, it was almost closing time. The store was empty of customers.

Yu Xiaotong was straightening up the counter and preparing to get off work when her phone suddenly notified her of a call.

She gave the caller ID a look and saw that it was Zuo Yuliang who was calling. Her heart started racing in her chest. After a long wait, she finally picked it up. “Hello!”

“Xiaotong, come see me at my office after work. I need to tell you something,” Zuo Yuliang said.

“What do you want to tell me?” Yu Xiaotong asked, feeling nervous.

“I’ll let you know when you come.” Zuo Yuliang placed his legs comfortably on the desk. Recalling Yu Xiaotong’s beautiful face, his features happily revealed a smile.

Yu Xiaotong’s heart quickened in her chest. She sensed Zuo Yuliang’s intention and was too timid to actually go through with the meeting. With a squeaky voice, she said, “I have something I must attend to. I’m sorry!”

After having said that, she immediately hung up.

After their call disconnected, Zuo Yuliang could only look at his phone with a frown on his face.

When the workday was over, Yu Xiaotong rushed out of the store like she was running away from something but little did she know she would run right into someone’s arms.

Zuo Yuliang had been waiting for her the whole time.

He did not pay any attention to Yu Xiaotong’s hectic explanation. Instead, he pulled her along and left with her.

Zuo Yuliang pulled Yu Xiaotong into his car and they drove straight to the Thousand Miles Meet Food City. He took them to a private room and pushed her into a chair beside him. While wrapping his arms around her waist, he turned to have a good look at her. He asked, “Xiaotong. I noticed that you have been avoiding me.”

Yu Xiaotong’s face turned an excruciating red. She shook her head and denied the whole time, “No.”

Zuo Yuliang suddenly reached over and kissed her loudly on the face. “Xiaotong, you are too cute!”

Yu Xiaotong did not expect the kiss. She was flabbergasted and could only turn to look at him blankly.

“Is there anything wrong?” He lifted a hand and touched her face. “Did I do something to scare you? Did I come across too strong just now?”

Yu Xiaotong only looked at him, no words coming out of her mouth.

Zuo Yuliang then smiled and said, “If you want, you can bully me back. I can take it, you know.”

Yu Xiaotong looked at his smiling face and felt like it was very familiar, very similar to the man from more than half a year ago.

But she had to say their smiles were not the same. She noticed the smile at the corner of that man’s mouth was both mocking and contemptuous. And the expression when that man was not smiling was always cold. It never had the bright light that Zuo Yuliang’s face always seemed to exude.

What Yu Xiaotong could not wrap her mind around was why she always associated Zuo Yuliang with that man in her head.

Not only Zuo Yuliang’s words, but also his smile reminded her of that person.

She did not know why, but she was moved to compare them. She felt that they had many similar qualities, but when she gave it more careful consideration, she felt that they were not that similar after all.

It was hard to avoid that the reason Zuo Yuliang gave her a familiar sense was probably because he and the man from half a year ago were one and the same.

Zuo Yuliang saw Yu Xiaotong’s blank gaze as if she was thinking of something. He burst out laughing and said, “Is something wrong? Did you just blackout? Or did all my bullying make you stunned?”

These words reminded her of the exchange that happened half a year ago. In the elevator of the Tianyu Wealthy Class, the man had asked her, “Woman, did my handsomeness make you faint? You’re too stunned to even talk?”

Zuo Yuliang’s words sent a chill through Yu Xiaotong’s heart. She almost believed that he was the same man she had met in the elevator!
