C5 A small change

Turns out a lot could happen. Thanks to her powers and also her parents’ memories she came home late last night drunk. Late and drunk. To be frank she was surprised that she was alive. Those were two of their rules and she had broken both in one day.

Now she was at the table trying to eat her breakfast, but was failing. Her head was on fire and she couldn’t find the off switch to her powers. She could hear everyone’s thoughts. Her driver on the safest route to use, her maid on what cleaning products to use for the floor and both her parents judging her.

“You know I can hear you right?” she asked still resting her head against the table.

“Then you’d know that what you did was wrong” her father replied his face still in the paper.

“I’m still waiting for your apology” her mother said dropping her cup harshly on the table. She wasn’t surprised when the cup broke.

“Calm down Elizabeth” her father said with an exasperated tone.

“I will not calm down. She drank and she came home late. What has gotten into you?!” she yelled.

“Please don’t yell” she sat up rubbing her temple. “My head is killing me” she whined.

“Be happy I’m not the one doing it” her voice dropping.

“Well I’m just doing what you wanted. You want me to normal or is it abnormal. You want me to be human and not be like other kids my age and control my powers. I’m being human like you wanted”.

“Do not raise your voice at me!” she yelled.

“Kids my age go out. They party and drink and….. Other stuff” she said. “That’s what humans do. I’m being human!”

Danny could hear sparks and she could feel cold air behind her. Her hair was already in the air. Her mum was really going to push her through her portal.

“I can’t be…..”

Her mother smiled and so did Danny and soon they were both on the ground still with those smiles like they were high on some kind of drugs. Her father had that power to control people’s emotions. And now they were both elated.

Her father stood up. “Lizzy she has school. You can’t send your child to wherever you like”. “Danny you’re grounded”.

“What does that even mean?” Danny asked using the table as support.

“You’ll find out later” her mother replied her getting up.

Danny sighed. Her headache was back and much worse.

The driver took her to school and she didn’t have time for anyone. She made her way to her class and as she stepped in the first person she saw was Kieran. She was meant to send him a message, but she was a little bit distracted.

She didn’t get it. She was supernatural, why was she affected by alcohol? She took a step and she saw the person sitting beside him. Adrien and he had his arm in a sling. She hadn’t seen him ever since the seat incident. Now she had to talk to Kieran.

“Hey Adrien” she said with a smile as she approached.

“You can have the seat. I don’t want to have more problems…..And injuries” he added.

She would have apologized, but he needed to be taught a lesson. “Yeah I don’t have time for you. I need to talk to Kieran” she said.

“What?! First you want my seat and now you want this seat. Can’t you make up your mind?” he asked.

“Don’t yell. I have a headache” she said.

“Well why wouldn’t you. You look horrible. What were you doing last night? Partying?”

“Shut your mouth!”

“Can the two of you please stop arguing” Kieran said breaking up the argument.

“Kieran I need to tell you-“

“Save it” he stated simply still not turning his face from the window.

“But-“

“Take it to someone who cares. Adrien you can have the seat, Daniella will sit in hers”.

“Who made you class president?!” Danny yelled.

Kieran actually turned to her and smirked. “I am class president” he replied.

Danny had nothing more to say and that was when Ronnie walked in. She stopped and observed the class. Everyone was looking towards Danny and Kieran.

“A little lovers spat I presume” she said as she sauntered in.

“I don’t like girls like her” and he turned back to the window.

Danny was shocked and so was Adrien. She would have cried, but she didn’t want to be embarrassed the more. She walked to the back of the class and rest her head on her table.

Ronnie sat on her table and gave her a pack of pills with bottled water. “Sorry Danny. I know you really like him” she whispered.

“He doesn’t like girls like me” she said sitting up swallowing two pills and taking a giant gulp of water.

“You really believe him? Look at you Danny, you’re a supermodel!”

“Please keep your voice down” she whispered pleadingly.

“Let’s do something” she whispered.

“I don’t feel like throwing water balloons at people today” she said resting her back. Finally her healing factor was working.

“No this time it’ll be on Kieran” she said with a mischievous smile.

“I don’t want to do anything to Kieran” she said. Yes he didn’t like her, but she still liked him and didn’t want to hurt him. She knew he was mad because she didn’t meet him yesterday. He thinks she doesn’t care about Clara. He really cared about Clara.

“It’ll be fun and he’s not going to get hurt. It’s going to be fun and for sure Kieran will see what he’s missing out on”.

“I don’t get what you’re trying to say” Danny was confused and her thoughts weren’t clear.

“Boys like funny and badass girls. He’ll realize he likes you for sure” she said leaning in closer. “Come on” he said nudging her.

“You think so?” she asked getting her smile back.

“I don’t think. I know” she whispered.

“Okay, what are we going to do?” Danny asked.

“During break you’ll see” she whispered and the bell rang.

Danny couldn’t wait for break. She wished she was her mum and could make time go faster. When it did come, she waited impatiently for Ronnie who was currently running late.

She looked up and she saw the blonde waving at her at the top of the steps that led to the cafeteria. She stood up and made her way to her.

“Where were you?” she asked.

“Getting supplies” she replied.

“For what?” Danny asked.

“The prank we’re going to pull on lover boy” she replied.

“You never said anything about pranking” she said now very much nervous.

“What did you think when I said he wasn’t going to get hurt?” she asked. “I think I’ve used that line when I pulled a prank with you before” she stated.

“I’m not sure pranking Kieran is a good idea” she said looking down at the students who were just going by without a clue of what was going to happen.

“Are you scared of Adams or something?” Ronnie teased picking up a bucket she hadn’t noticed.

“No” she denied. “I’m not scared of anyone. Why would I be scared of Kieran of all people?!” she yelled.

“Okay, just be calm” she said.

“What’s in there?” she asked.

“Tomato sauce” she replied. “All we have to do is….”

She didn’t wait for her friend to finish. She took the bucket from her and emptied the contents quickly and handed the bucket back to Ronnie who was still slow in catching up with what just happened. She walked down the other side so she’d look less guilty.

Getting down, they were a lot of shocked faces and hushed whispers and comical expressions. She would have laughed, but then she saw who she really hit. It wasn’t Kieran. He was completely clean from head to toe. It was much worse.

“Stephanie!” a group of girls screamed.

Those were the cheerleaders. She could tell their uniforms and the normal clique. They surrounded Stephanie which only meant one thing. Stephanie was the cheerleader captain who had been hit with a water balloon just the other day.

“Who did this?” a girl from the group demanded.

“Red is a good color on you Valentine” a voice close to her said.

“Ronnie now is not the-“

“Who said that?” the girl with the annoying voice asked.

All eyes turned to her and Ronnie and they actually cleared a path.

“What are you saying?” the girl asked confused.

“I said red is a good color on your captain” she repeated. “Can’t you guys hear or are you too high on the pyramid to do so”.

“You are just-“

Stephanie walked forward slowly.

‘How did this happen?’ Danny thought.

“You did this” Stephanie stated her eyebrows twitching in controlled anger.

“You can’t prove I did anything” Ronnie said mimicking her stance.

There was a spark in her energy and that had her moving forward before she could realize. She was at Ronnie’s side breaking their staring contest.

“She’s right Stephanie. She was with me the whole time” she said trying not to cower under her stare.

“You see Valentine. If I was with her the whole time, where would I get the time to sneak of and douse you with tomato sauce?” she asked with a smirk.

“No one said it was tomato sauce” she practically growled.

“I have a nose and a brain” she replied wittily.

“If you had a brain, you’d know there was a time you two could have separated and could have done this, or you two did it together” she said looking down at them with a smirk of her own.

“What would we gain from pranking the captain of the cheerleading team?!” Ronnie asked trying to keep her temper in check.

“You said it yourself. I am the captain of the cheerleading team and you know that you’re beneath me” she said with a very nice hair flip in Danny’s opinion.

Ronnie lost it.

“You think because you’re a cheerleader you have achieved something. You are just a dumb rich girl who surrounds herself with brainless idiots so she can feel smart. You’re a bully and……”

Her rant was cut off by Stephanie’s backhand making contact with her cheek.

That caused a lot of gasps. Even Danny that could read minds wasn’t expecting that.

Ronnie was the most surprised her hand on her assaulted cheek.

“Next time, I won’t be so forgiving” and she turned away.

“Bitch” Ronnie said under her breath.

“Also” Stephanie called back walking towards them. “If you want to commit a prank, make sure you clean up traces of evidence” she said grabbing Ronnie’s hair with a gloved hand and showing her red roots.

“Also Daniella you got a little something just there” she pointed out.

Danny looked to see that some of the sauce had actually gotten on her knuckles.

“Who’s the dumb bitch and brainless idiot now?” she asked with a small smile. “Because I’m looking at them” and she walked away her squad following.

Stephanie said she was the one who had adopted the human lifestyle and here she was a cheerleader and the captain. She really looked like a hypocrite right now.

“We did great, didn’t we?” Ronnie asked.

“That was a complete disaster” she said.

She ignored the crowd who she knew was talking about them. They both walked past not looking at anyone. She didn’t see Kieran the boy that was meant to be the one pranked.

“No it wasn’t” Ronnie said placing a hand on her shoulder. “Stephanie is like a top dog in the school and you pranked her. It’s very brave of you” she whispered with glee.

“Then why did you say we’d prank Kieran?” she asked.

“Because, if I said we’d prank Stephanie you wouldn’t”.

She would have denied it, but Ronnie graced her with a flat stare. She kept quiet.

“Now Kieran will see how brave and how badass you are”.

“To be honest you were the one who was badass. I just stood there” she admitted not really happy with how things turned out.

“You pulled the prank and I’d look like the friend defending you” she said.

“Are you s-“

“Trust me. Now go wash your hands. I have something to take care of”.

“Okay see you later” and she made her way into the building.

As she approached the girl’s bathroom, she remembered what happened yesterday and how she was meant to tell Kieran about it this morning, but she blew up?

She sighed tiredly. Now she needed to find him. But she didn’t feel up for it. She walked into the bathroom and washed her hands. She saw a girl approach her because of the mirror.

“You’re Daniella right?” she asked the ginger head asked.

“I’m a Daniella” she replied turning to face her.

“North?”

“Yeah” she replied warily. She didn’t want to deal with a human right now. Especially if she was a cheerleader.

“I heard you pranked Stephanie Valentine today. The head cheerleader and I’m surprised to see you’re still in one piece” she said impressed. “Everyone said it’s really brave of you and I think so too. You still stood up to her at the end” she said with an adoring look in her eyes.

“Thank you” she said not really used to attention like this. “It was nothing” she said trying to act cool. Ronnie always told her she was cool.

“See you around” and she walked out.

Danny felt so good. So good about herself that she wanted to hear what everyone else was saying about her. Yes the girl made a ‘tiny’ mistake of how it actually went down, but she didn’t want to correct her. She walked out of the bathroom this time with her head high.

She loved how people pointed at her and whispered obviously. She loved it. Stephanie might be a princess wherever she came from, but here she wasn’t untouchable. She was the first person that actually stood up to her and she felt so good about it. Now she wouldn’t have that power which all these human had given her.

She stopped by her lockers. Break would soon be over and she needed to get her books.

“North”.

That voice disgusted her. He spoke like he went to a fancy boarding school.

“Hunter” she called back bitterly.

“I heard what you did” he said leaning against the locker beside her.

“And?” she asked waiting for his praise.

He smiled. “You must be brave or must be very stupid” he stated simply.

“What?! Did you just-“

“Enough of that please” he said dismissively. “What happened to you?”

“What are you saying?” she asked confused.

“I’m saying, this isn’t you. At least this version of you isn’t the real you”.

“Don’t talk to me like that!” she warned. “You don’t know me” she said clenching her fists. She didn’t want to hurt him. The first time was an accident, but this time it would be intentional. “So you better watch that mouth of yours”.

“I don’t know you, but I’ve been watching you for the past few weeks. I think it’s already a month now. You were a nice and quiet girl even though you were hanging out with Clara. You were nice and always had your face in a book and was well behaved. Now you’re a shadow of your former self”.

“I’m still my normal self. I’m still nice and I take my studies seriously!”

“Do you?” he asked with a scoff and an eye roll. “You skipped class, you broke my hand which I’m still amazed at. You yelled at Kieran and you pranked Stephanie and now you’re so bad now and not the good kind of bad”.

“I’m not bad, I’m cool. You said you knew me by watching me and you think just by that you’ll actually know me. This is the real me. My true colors as you call it”.

“You aren’t cool Danny. Cute maybe, but not cool. Right now you’re just being a jerk”.

“And you would know?” she asked.

“Yes I would. And just so you know, Clara wouldn’t do this” and he walked away.

Danny groaned and hot her locker hard. She a jerk? Wasn’t cool? What did that stupid human know? She stood up against the ice queen of the school and she was being labelled a jerk. Just because she poured tomato sauce on Stephanie.

She needed to find Ronnie. Ronnie always knew the right thing to say at a time like this.

She was human, so she didn’t have a trace of energy to follow, so she had to find her with only her eyes. It was so exhausting walking round the school trying to find her, then she remembered that she had a phone.

She stopped in front of a window and looked down at the sea of students in the yard and she caught sight of the green eyed blonde. By her side there was also a blonde who she was talking to and she felt that energy again.

Not as strong as she did yesterday, but still there. Her eyes turned black and she could see it. His aura like black smoke around him and he was making eye contact with her.

No he wasn’t. It only looked like he was looking at her, but he was looking elsewhere. Well she hoped that was what was happening.

She looked to her phone and it looked like Ronnie didn’t answer. Now was her chance she could find Kieran and tell him what happened. But she couldn’t leave Veronica with him, but Ronnie didn’t know anything about their world so she should be save for now.

She traced Kieran’s energy to the field. When she arrived she saw him in the bleachers. A lot of people were practicing. Track team, football team and the cheer team. She would have tried to get his attention, but she stooped.

Whoever Kieran was watching, he was so caught up in him or her. Hs energy which was normally scorching hot was now warm and relaxed. So inviting. She felt jealous. His energy had never been like that around her. Not even when they were together. That night when they watched the stars.

“Danny”.

She turned to see Ronnie and she walked up to her and just hugged her. Burying her face in the crook of her neck.

She was shocked really. Danny had never hugged her. They had only held hands before and that was it. The only form of intimate psychical contact they had. Plus the time on the bike when she held her, but that doesn’t count.

“Danny, what’s wrong?” she whispered hugging her back.

“Can we just leave? I’ve had enough school for today” she said letting go and brushing her skirt.

“I never thought I’d hear the day” she smiled.

She was surprised really. Danny was such a good girl and now she was suggesting that they skip school. She was always the one to suggest all these things, but now Danny was taking charge and she liked it.

“Are you in or not?” Danny asked.

“For sure” and Danny led the way this time with her following.

‘The student had become the master’ she thought skipping along.

The bell had already rung and students were scrambling to get to class, but it didn’t get to Danny. She wanted to get far away from this building as soon as possible. She made her way to the back and waited for Ronnie who was jogging and already out of breath.

“Where do you want to go?” Ronnie asked composing herself.

“Just take me somewhere I’ll be able to forget the shitty day I had” she replied getting on and placing the helmet on her head.

“The arcade it is” she replied getting on.

‘Arcade?’ Danny thought.

“So what happened that caused the drastic mood change. You were okay before I left, right?”

“Yes, but it changed. I don’t want to talk about it” she replied just wishing that Ronnie would get a move on.

“Why don’t you want to talk about it? We’re friends aren’t we?”

“We are” Danny replied.

“Friends share stuff” she said. “So just tell me” she whispered.

“Adrien said some horrible stuff to me and it just got worse because I think Kieran may like someone else” she whispered.

Ronnie hummed. “You really listened to that jerk? Danny forget about Adrien and how are you so sure Kieran likes someone?”

“I sen-, I just had a feeling that’s all” she replied coolly. ‘That was really close’ she thought.

“You didn’t see him with a girl, did you?” she asked.

“No” she replied.

“You see. Don’t think about it too much. Now you just need some fun in your system. Everything will turn out well in the end, you’ll see” she said and they were already moving.

‘Finally!’ she thought happily.

“How do you know?” she asked.

“I just know all these things Danny. Have I let you down before?” she asked.

“No” she replied.

“Trust me on this. It’ll will work out”.

Ronnie has always been right with everything she said so she could trust her.

Danny left with her friend. Forgetting to tell Kieran what she had to again.

All the while both girls talked on the bike, they weren’t aware of a pair of eyes watching them.

The arcade turned out to be a fun place. A place filled with games. She didn’t play though, she watched. Ronnie was really good at the games she selected. Though noisy, the place had a calming vibe which she liked.

“I called you earlier” she told Ronnie when she was done.

“You did?” she asked getting her phone out of her inner pocket. “I must have been busy” she said placing it back in her pocket. “Was it important?”

“Yes, but it wasn’t life threatening” she brushed it off.

“If you say so. Let’s play more games” and Danny followed.

“What were you doing at the time? If you don’t mind me asking” she added.

“It was a family affair” she replied getting to another game and inserting a coin.

“Here in school?” Danny asked perplexed.

“Yes here in school” she replied and pushed Danny towards the game.

“You play” she whispered in her ear.

“What? I don’t know how to” she replied already panicking as she looked into the screen.

“Me neither. Just press all the buttons really quickly” she said behind her.

“No I can’t do it Ronnie” she said stepping away. “Why don’t we just get some food, yeah?”

“That’s boring, but okay. Don’t be such a…..Never mind”.

“What were you doing to say” Danny asked.

“Nothing” she replied.

“Say it!” Danny demanded. She was already angry and friend or not Ronnie should really be careful.

“Bore” Ronnie whispered.

Danny was so mad that she didn’t notice the glint in her eyes or the tiny smirk she had.

“I’ll show you who’s a bore” she whispered and turned to the game.

“Now that’s the Danny I know. Very cool” she whispered behind her.

Danny growled. She just had to read all their minds and that would make her great. She wasn’t a bore. She was cool.
