C1 1. I'm Not Your Pet!

Florida, USA.

I’m currently a black kitten with black eyes. I’m very light and nimble. It’s a nice feeling.

Here’s the thing. Lots of people are superstitious of black cats, thinking they bring bad luck.

If black cats bring bad luck, do white cats bring good luck? The only thing white cats bring are clumps of white fur on dark furniture. Racist beliefs.

Anyways, enough of my complaining. My favorite form is a cat because they’re well known throughout the world. Then it’s my human form, and next is probably a british columbia wolf.

Like I said, I can transform into anything. Humans are no exception.

I know what you’re thinking. If I can only transform with the color black, then does my human form look like a silhouette? The answer is no. My human form is tall with pitch black hair and deep black eyes with porcelain white skin. People stare at me weirdly when I use it, so I just stick to animals and immobile objects like a trash can or something.

Right now I’m walking down the street to a park I frequent.

I arrive at the park shortly and sit down on the spider dome.

In the park, the ground is sandy, there’s a slide, monkey bars, more slides, and a pole that kids use to climb up.

There’s also the spider dome I’m sitting on top of. I call it a spider dome because I don’t know the actual name for it. It’s like a spider web but made of rubber and metal. Kids like to climb through it and on top of it, etc. I like the top because the wind is the nicest here.

If I sat on the slide, the trees block the breeze.

My eyes are closed and the wind brushes through my fur. How nice this day is.

My ear twitched once and I opened one eye and looked down only to see a little girl climbing the spider dome.

“....”

The girl has short brown hair and soft brown eyes. I can already tell, she’s going to break so many hearts.

I watch her as she slowly reaches the top. She reaches for my head and I hop off the dome.

She then lost her balance and fell through one of the holes of the dome and onto the sandy floor.

I sit at the sidelines and watch her cry.

Jesus Christ. So annoying. Why are children so noisy? They’re like alarm clocks, but worse because they have a conscience.

I can’t take any more crying!! I walk over to her and curl up on her lap. Her tears instantly stop and I’m regretting my actions of the past few minutes.

She starts petting me and laughs. Someone else walks over to her and I hop off her lap.

It was her mother. She looks at me and then at the girl, before pulling the girl away to the car.

I literally mean pulling. The girl’s hand was stretched out to me like I was her last hope and the look in her eyes was so sad! I

actually felt pity.

The girl tried to break free a few times, but her mother was stronger. When the mother was about to put her in her carseat, the girl ran towards me.

That caught me off guard, like how fast was she? She ran a few meters in about 10 seconds. For a small child, twice my height, this was impressive.

Yes, I saw it coming from miles away, but I’m lazy. Let’s get one thing straight. I’m the laziest thing on the planet and won’t move unless it’s the last thing left to do.

She ran up to me and grabbed me. When she ran back, she turned towards her mother and asked her a question.

“Kitty... Keep.. Home?”

Okay, what the hell does that even mean? I had no clue because I don’t spend time around children often.

I forgot to mention my age. I’ve been on this earth for about 40 years so far, but my aging stopped at 18 in my human form. I don’t even know what my original form looks like.

Back to reality. The mother looks her daughter in the eyes and I can see the hesitation. She doesn’t want a cat, but her daughter put on puppy eyes.

No parent can resist their child’s puppy eyes. She unwillingly nods her head and puts the girl in the car. They soon leave the park and drive to their house.

I don’t really care where I’m going because I’ve been traveling a lot, but something tells me I’m not going to like it.

We arrive at the girl’s house and the mother takes the girl out of the car with her in her arms.

The little girl runs to the door and her mother unlocks it for her.

“Melody, don’t run inside the house please!”

Who’s Melody? I soon took the hint and found out the little girl’s name was Melody and the woman’s name was Mommy.

Melody ran with me to her room and put me on the floor.

I just sat there and watched her rummage for things.

Melody picked me up again and put me on her bed.

She called me Kitty.

As time went by, the family bought things for me, like a litter box, cat food, and.. A collar???

Wait, I didn’t sign up for this!!

I was fine with staying, but I didn’t think they’d want me to become a pet!

Melody was about 10 years old and she officially named me Night.

I was only with it, but I still consider my name to be Helix. Night can be my last name.. For now.

“Night! You need to have this on you! It proves you’re a part of our family.” Melody shouted.

Hell no! Those are my chains restraining me from freedom!

She ran around the room and eventually caught me.

I’m tired. How much energy does this child have? I need a nap..

When I woke up, Melody was sleeping next to me. It was late at night and everyone was sleeping.

When I stood up, I felt this heavy thing on me.

“...”

I’d like to say I jumped down from the bed, but I actually fell off of it because this heavy thing was around me.

I hobbled to the mirror and looked at myself.

There was a full grown black cat with black eyes and a red collar.

Shit..

Not like I can take it off anyways. I walked around a bit before getting used to the feeling.

I hopped back on the bed and fell asleep.

Time flew by, and Melody was growing up. She was 16 now and had gotten into makeup. Mommy’s name turned into Mom as time passed, and my name stayed the same.

Oh no.. My little Melody’s growing up!! What am I going to do???

Don’t cats live like 10-20 years? How am I going to fake my death? Ah.. What a pain.

Wait, why am I thinking about this now? She’s still young.

It was the morning and Melody would usually give me a pat on the head before leaving for school.

She didn’t do it today, which surprised me. Perhaps she’s excited about something.

I lazed around all day like the cat I am, and was awakened from my half dead state when the door opened. Of course it was Mom!

I was so happy to see her! My dinner would be served.

Mom fed me and returned to her room. After a few minutes passed by, the door opened again. This time it was Mark.

Wait, wait, wait, let me explain. Mark is a new addition to the family. He’s now together with Melody’s mother and plans on

marrying her. Mom and Mark have been together since Melody was 10 years old.

Of course Melody doesn’t approve, but she really can’t say anything because it’ll hurt Mom’s feelings.

Because of Melody’s dislike towards Mark, she doesn’t come back to the house as early and hangs out with her friends. She’s a bit of a rebel, especially at this age.

Her clothes are always tight, showing off her body, and leaving guys drooling. She wears makeup all the time, even to go to school.

Anyways, now that you know the main points of what’s been happening these past several years, let’s continue.

Mark walked in and patted me on the head. He took off his coat and put it on the hanger by the front door.

The next second, Melody walked in and passed by Mark like he didn’t exist.

She went to her room and I followed.

They had a two story house, so it took me a short while to get up the stairs.

When I reached Melody’s room, she was on her bed, playing on her phone. She then started giggling like a cute little girl.

Maybe she wasn’t playing a game..?

I jumped on the bed and looked at her phone.

Oh, so it was texting. Who’s she talking to? If she’s giggling like that, she must be talking to someone she likes.

The name on the messages read Jack.

Oh, so this Jack has made my Melody like her, eh?

As I’ve been around Melody for nearly 10 years, I’ve grown quite attached to her. So far my life has been peaceful except for the

occasional fights between Melody and her family.

I hear heavy footsteps on the stairs and they stop at Melody’s door.

The door opens and Mark pops his head in and tells Melody to come down for dinner.

She looks at him with clear annoyance written on her face.

“Why are you here? You didn’t even knock.”

“Sorry, Melody. I’ll try to remember next time.”

“Dinner’s ready, so can you come downstairs?”

“No.”

“Why? Is something bothering you?”

“You’re not my father. Now get out.”

The sudden hostility caught me off guard. I got used to it over the years, but this was different. Maybe it’s because Melody was talking to a boy and her future step father barged in and ruined the mood?

Mom came up the stairs and asked what was taking so long.

“Melody won’t come downstairs.”

“Why?”

“You go ask her, she won’t listen to me.”

“Alright, Love.”

Mom walked through Melody’s door and said the same thing that Mark said to her.

“Dinner’s ready and come downstairs please.”

“No.”

“Why? You won’t listen to Mark, and now you’re not listening to me? Who do you think you are?”

“The question is, who do you think you are? Mark is not my father, so I’ve got no obligation to listen to his words.”

“How dare you!! You rude brat! Get downstairs in 10 minutes, or you can see your phone confiscated for a month!”

“MOM!!!!”

The door shut with a bam and footsteps were heard descending the stairs.

“UGHH!!!” Melody yelled.

I shit my eyes and flattened my ears. The sound was horrifying. As a cat who can hear five times better than humans, this was ear rape.

She looked at her phone and texted something else to the person named Jack. She then left her room in a rush and went downstairs and out the door.

After I followed her and descended the stairs as well, I could hear Mom shouting at Melody to come back inside the house. She was already long gone.

I quickly ran after Melody and followed her from a distance.

She stopped walking at the park where we first met. She sat on top of the spider dome and lowered her head.

As soon as I was about to go and jump on her lap to comfort her, a shadow walked towards her.

When the shadow came into the light, she lifted her head and smiled. Her cheeks were pink and her makeup was still on.

After seeing the person under the light, her cheeks turned red. He was tall. He was about 6’0, he had brown hair and green eyes.

His hair was a little shaggy and he had a smile on his face.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

“So you had a fight with your parents again?”

“Yeah.”

I was listening to their conversation from afar. He was good looking, but I didn’t get a good vibe from him at all. I sensed he wasn’t a loyal person and someone who would put himself above everyone else.

He didn’t act that way when talking to Melody, so I was confused. I didn't know how to warn her.

I had contemplated changing to my human form and rescuing her, but that’d be weird for her.

“My mom is just thinking for herself. She doesn’t think about how I feel.”

“Oh. I wish I could help you. The only thing I can do is comfort you.”

Melody nodded.

“Come here.”

Melody got off the spider dome and walked towards him. Once she reached him, he pulled her into an embrace.

Her eyes were shut and she was blushing so hard, her ears were crimson.

I just sat in the dark, watching them.

He then released her from his arms and grabbed her chin. She looked up in shock and saw into his eyes.

He brought her face to his and kissed her on the lips.

“...”

I watched this scene with disgust. Holding back my urge to retch, I stared at him.

When they separated, he said something in her ear.

“Feeling better?”

“Yes.”

She was blushing so hard, I could practically see steam radiating off of her cheeks.

Jack then turned and walked away.

“See you at school, Melody.”

I clicked my tongue internally and walked to her.

She was still in a state of shock from a few minutes ago. When I jumped on her shoulders, she snapped out of it and walked home.

At home, she was in a much better mood. Mom and Mark asked where she was, and she told them she went out for air. She felt

much better and the night went smoothly.
