C4 Don't Mention the Breakup

"I..." Edwin's thin lips moved, but he didn't say anything else. However, there was a deep look in his eyes that Jane couldn't quite understand beneath his golden glasses.

He gazed at Jane's back, lost in thought for a moment before turning and heading towards the study.

For the past three years, Jane had been living alone in a rented house. She had honed her cooking skills, and soon two dishes and a soup were served on the table.

"Edwin, dinner is ready." Jane gently knocked on the study door.

When she didn't receive a response, she carefully pushed the door open.

Inside, Edwin was on the phone, and she heard him say, "You can handle these things as you see fit. No need to report everything to me."

After hanging up, Edwin's gaze met Jane's. He asked in his usual cold tone, "What is it?"

"We can have dinner now," Jane replied with a smile, avoiding his gaze.

"I'll be there in a moment," Edwin said, his tone still indifferent.

The two of them sat across from each other and ate in silence, the atmosphere heavy. Jane struggled to find something to say, but Edwin's cold demeanor made her hesitant to speak.

After the meal, Edwin took the initiative to wash the dishes, and Jane didn't refuse. Since he was willing to help with the housework, Jane saw no reason to object.

She could tell from Edwin's awkward movements that he wasn't used to doing such things. But it was understandable. How could the CEO of such a large company waste time washing dishes?

Crash!

Jane heard the sound of a porcelain bowl breaking in the kitchen and quickly got up to check.

She found Edwin holding a broken bowl, staring blankly at the shattered pieces on the floor.

"Let me do it," Jane offered, trying to take the bowl from him.

"No need, I can handle it," Edwin replied coldly, shaking off Jane's hand.

"Edwin, actually..." Jane began, but when she met his determined gaze, she fell silent.

She nodded and left the kitchen, leaving him to deal with the broken dish.

Despite being legally married, Edwin was still a mystery to Jane.

She yearned to understand him, to know everything there was to know about him, and to become the best wife she could possibly be. But with his high status, could she ever truly get close to him?

Jane settled into the living room and picked up the remote, randomly flipping on the news.

Occasionally, she stole a glance towards the kitchen where Edwin was washing the dishes with focus and diligence.

She let out a quiet sigh. Who knew this man could be so handsome even when washing dishes?

Perhaps it was her gaze that was too intense, but Edwin suddenly turned around and caught her staring.

Their eyes met, and Jane saw a hint of chill in his gaze before he offered her a polite smile.

Her cheeks flushed as she smiled back. She tried to focus on the TV, but her mind was consumed with thoughts of Edwin.

He was so charismatic in his work, but she wanted to see him in a more vulnerable light, like when he was washing dishes.

When Edwin finished cleaning up in the kitchen, he returned to the living room and found Jane lost in thought.

He studied her delicate features for a moment before speaking her name in a pleasant voice. Jane felt a warm sensation spread throughout her body.

Edwin sat down on the opposite side of the couch. "There's something I'd like to discuss with you."

Jane nodded eagerly. She wanted to clear the air and have an open conversation with him.

Edwin's gaze swept over her from head to toe before he began, "Jane, today at the company..."

But Jane cut him off, "I understand. I don't want our personal relationship to become fodder for the company's gossip."

She had worked hard to get where she was in the company, and she didn't want her personal life to overshadow her career.

Edwin's expression remained calm, but there was a glint of something in his eyes that Jane couldn't quite place.

"I didn't mean to keep my position as CEO a secret from you," Edwin said slowly. "I didn't announce our relationship publicly today because I wasn't sure how you felt about it. But that doesn't mean I wanted to hide it forever."

Jane nodded, understanding his perspective. "For me, work and life are two separate entities. I don't see the need to bring our marriage into the workplace."

She didn't want her relationship with Edwin to taint her professional reputation. Plus, she wasn't certain where their marriage would lead.

Edwin studied her for a moment before asking, "Have you told your family about our marriage?"

Jane shook her head, unwilling to discuss her family.

"I've recently taken over innovation in technology, and there are some personal matters I need to attend to. If it's alright with you, I'd like to visit your father and mother after this period of work," Edwin said calmly, as if he anticipated that Jane had not divulged this information to her family.

"No, thank you," Jane declined directly, though she felt it was impolite.

She quickly added, "I've had an issue with my family and haven't been in touch with them for a while. Let's discuss this in the future."

Her family?

Every time Jane thought of it, her heart ached and her breath became labored. That family had not been hers for the past three years, and she could never return.

"Jane," Edwin's deep voice called her name. "You're not alone anymore. You have me."

Although Edwin's tone was emotionless, his pleasant voice conveyed a different sentiment.

Jane felt a complex emotion in her heart, despite Edwin's words not being explicitly romantic.

Though she had persevered through the years, she still felt sad and mournful when she thought about that matter in the middle of the night. She cried silently.

"Jane," Edwin spoke after a long silence. "We are now husband and wife. I want to spend the rest of my life with you sincerely."

Jane was taken aback by Edwin's sudden confession. She looked up at him and saw his honest gaze. She replied, "I've already made up my mind to spend the rest of my life with you."

Edwin stared at her beautiful face for a few moments before asking, "Jane, can you promise me that we won't break up, no matter what happens?"

"Yes!" Jane nodded firmly. "I'll do my best to be a good wife."

Jane had been thinking the same thing but felt relieved that Edwin mentioned it first.
