C2 The Wolf's Den

The Ironfang Academy rose before her like a fortress forged by gods and sharpened by war.

Carved into the snow-bitten cliffs of the Serath Mountains, its towers pierced the low-hanging clouds like the fangs of an ancient beast. Selene Valeska - or rather, Silas Dusk now - stepped off the transport rail, coat drawn tight against the wind and her identity.

Her name. Her scent. Her entire existence had been rewritten.

To the world, Selene Valeska had vanished - a runaway Alpha's daughter, presumed dead or dishonored. In her place stood a ghost boy: Silas Dusk, an orphan from no-pack lands. A blank slate with a forged transfer form and enough wolfsbane salve to suppress her scent and half her sanity.

She moved through the crowd like a shadow, careful to keep her head low and her eyes lower.

Around her, a sea of young wolves snarled and shoved, already asserting dominance before they'd even crossed the threshold. Boys bred to conquer, trained to break. Their scents were bold and wild, a chorus of challenge pheromones lacing the air with tension.

Selene - Silas - was supposed to be one of them.

Her chest ached from the effort of keeping her breath shallow. The wolfsbane burned along her skin, tricking even her instincts into submission. Her wolf curled deep in her belly, suffocated beneath layers of deception. But she couldn't afford to feel.

Not here. Not yet.

"Eyes down, Dusk," she murmured, voice low and husky. She'd practiced it a hundred times: deeper, more gravel, less softness. The hat shadowed her cheekbones. Her posture was hunched, calculating. Every detail choreographed.

The academy's great gates groaned open, and a flood of bodies surged toward the main rotunda. Fifty initiates. Fifty futures balanced on a knife's edge.

The room they entered was cathedral-like - arched ceilings of stone and bone, with stained glass depicting legendary Alphas in mid-transformation. Wolves and men, warriors and monsters. Moonlight spilled through the crimson panes, casting blood patterns onto the floor.

A chill wrapped around her spine. It wasn't just from the cold.

A Beta in black military uniform stepped onto the dais.

"LINE UP!" he barked.

His voice cracked like a whip. The crowd stilled instantly.

The man was all edges - steel-grey eyes, rigid posture, and a presence that demanded submission. The kind of man who could smell a lie at ten paces. Selene's pulse spiked.

"Full name. Rank. Region," he repeated, stepping down the line.

She was fourth. Too soon.

"Tyren Hale. Alpha-born. East Ridge."

"Cassian Vrell. Beta. Riverlands."

"Jace Torm. Alpha-blood. Western Reach."

Then it was her turn.

She stepped forward, held her breath, and delivered the name that could either save or destroy her.

"Silas Dusk. Alpha candidate. No-Pack."

Silence.

The officer's eyes narrowed. His nose twitched, just barely. For one agonizing heartbeat, she thought he'd caught her.

"No-pack Alphas don't make it far," He said flatly.

"I won't waste your time," she replied, forcing calm into every syllables.

A beat passed. Then the thud of a stamp.

"Dorm 17. Uniform requisition at the next station. Orientation at dawn. Next."

Selene stepped back into the crowd, chest tight. That had been too close.

Dorm 17 was a grim slab of stone and shadow tucked into the academy's northern wing - cold, drafty, and practically frozen over. The hallway reeked of wet fur and testosterone, and the light above the door flickered as if struggling to stay alive.

Inside, the room was a mess of metal bunks, cracked floors, and peeling walls. Six beds. No privacy.

She claimed the lowest one in the farthest corner, where the shadows clung thickest. Her satchel went beneath the mattress. Her blade, under the pillow. Her back, always to the wall.

The name Dusk felt foreign. Weak. But she whispered it like a prayer anyway.

Dusk. Dusk. Dusk. You are no one now. And no one survives.

But her wolf was restless beneath the wolfsbane, pacing the cage of her ribs. It felt something here. Something that made its ears flatten and its teeth bare.

Half an hour later, the voices reached her ears before the door slammed open.

"Dorm 17? Lucky you, you're bottom feeders. Better than getting stuck with the elites. I heard Volkner's back this term."

"Volkner?"

"Alpha blood royalty. Kills with a look."

Five boys tumbled in, all muscle and noise. Her bunk groaned above her as the tallest - lean, dark-haired, smirking like a devil - threw himself down.

"Yo, you the stray?" he asked, grinning wide. "The no-pack mutt?"

Selene didn't flinch. "Something like that."

"Damn," another boy - twitchy, pale, with wild copper hair - snorted. "They're really letting rogues in now. What's next, Omegas with scholarships?"

Selene turned her head toward the wall, silent. Her wolf snarled beneath her skin, but she held it down. She couldn't afford a challenge. Not tonight.

The rest of the boys claimed their bunks, unpacking loudly. Someone played a tinny recording from a smuggled device - a bass-heavy song with no melody, just violence. Another tested his claws against the bedframe, metal squealing under his touch.

The one with the devil-grin leaned over her bunk.

"Name's Killian," he said. "Try not to cry when training breaks you."

She smiled faintly. "Try not to bleed when I outrun you."

That earned a pause - then a bark of laughter. "Spicy."

But he left her alone after that.

The night dragged long.

Above her, a snore. Beside her, murmurs of girls, of scars, of old fights. She lay rigid, listening to every breath, every creak of the floorboards, every heartbeat in the dark.

If they found out...

They wouldn't just expel her.

They'd gut her for sport.

Her hand rested on the blade beneath her pillow.

Sleep finally dragged her under, but it was shallow, broken by the ghosts of memory.

She dreamed of the snow-heavy Valeska gardens, stained red with spilled blood. Her brother's voice echoed in the dark.

And a stranger's eyes-silver, unblinking-held hers like chains. She felt something twist inside her, feral and hungry, something that didn't care she was lying or hiding.

It wanted him. It chose him.

Selene woke with a gasp, the wolfsbane scent biting her nose, her heart slamming against her ribs. No. She wouldn't let it happen. She wouldn't.

She didn't know him yet.

But he was coming.

And he would change everything.

But for now, Selene slept with a knife beneath her pillow and wolfsbane on her skin - a girl draped in a boy's shadow, clinging to a lie sharp enough to cut her if she breathed too deeply. The academy would tear them all down to bone and rebuild only the worthy. She didn't know if she could become what Ironfang demanded. She only knew she couldn't go back.
