C8 Bonds and Boundaries

Selene's POV

The following week passed in a blur of strict schedules, aching limbs, and stolen glances.

Selene, still firmly cloaked in her identity as Silas Dusk, adapted quickly to the cadence of life at the Alpha Academy. Her morning routines became automatic: wake before dawn, tidy her corner of the dorm, and quietly slip into her uniform before Rowan even stirred.

Rowan Volkner remained as unreadable as ever.

He was disciplined, always composed. If he noticed anything unusual about her, he didn't show it. He hardly spoke unless necessary, and even then his voice was calm and low, like thunder rumbling in the distance. Still, Selene often found herself wondering what was going on behind those piercing storm-gray eyes.

He moved with a grace too sharp to be gentle, yet he never crossed the invisible line between them. Not in words, not in presence.

Not yet.

On Mondays and Thursdays, they had Physical Endurance & Pack Formation at the eastern grounds. The cadets trained in simulated group missions, building trust through obstacle courses and combat rotations.

Selene hated it.

Trust was dangerous.

Her strategy was simple: stay near the middle, do just enough not to draw attention, and never let her guard down. The instructors didn't push her too hard, likely assuming she was still adjusting to the academy.

But Kieran, her new and increasingly persistent friend, made staying under the radar more difficult.

"Hey, Dusk," he greeted as they jogged side by side during warm-up, his tone breezy despite the sweat glistening on his brow. "What do you think they're feeding Rowan? That guy moves like he's got steel springs for bones."

Selene smiled despite herself. "Maybe he just trains harder."

Kieran chuckled. "Or he's secretly half panther. That would explain the broody stare."

They paused at the first station-a wall climb made slick with mist-and waited for instructions.

"Anyway," Kieran said, shifting closer, "rumor is, Volkner almost didn't get a roommate this year. Last two cracked under pressure."

"That's a fact?"

"Mhm. And yet here you are, all mysterious and chill."

Selene didn't answer.

She could feel Rowan somewhere nearby. Her instincts always flared when he was close, like an itch under her skin she couldn't scratch. She spotted him a few paces ahead, giving instructions to another Alpha cadet with minimal effort, his words few but effective.

He wasn't a leader by declaration. He simply was.

People followed him like leaves in a current.

That evening, the cafeteria buzzed louder than usual. A holiday was approaching-Wolf Moon Week, a traditional celebration for pack bonding and combat tournaments.

Selene settled at her usual corner near the Beta tier. Kieran plopped down beside her without asking.

"You're not eating much," he noted.

She glanced at her tray. The bland stew and barley loaf weren't very appetizing.

"Just not hungry," she said.

Kieran gave her a long look, then nudged his extra roll toward her. "You need energy to keep up the dark-and-silent act."

She rolled her eyes, but took the roll.

They ate in companionable quiet for a moment before he leaned in.

"You're weird, you know that? But... in a good way."

Selene blinked, caught off guard. "Thanks, I think."

"Just don't vanish on me, okay?"

She gave a noncommittal shrug, but inside her chest stirred something warm. Unfamiliar.

Connection.

She couldn't afford it. Not really. But a friend-just one-might not be so dangerous.

Back in the dorm, Rowan was already there. He sat at his desk, shirt off, back to her, a book open in his hands. A candle flickered nearby, casting soft shadows across the planes of his muscled shoulders.

Selene turned away quickly, heat rising to her face. It was foolish-he wouldn't suspect anything from a fellow "boy"-but her reaction wasn't something she could control.

She moved to her bed and sat down quietly.

Rowan spoke without turning. "You made a friend."

Her heart lurched. "What?"

He finally glanced over his shoulder. "That boy. Kieran. I saw you two talking."

"He's... friendly."

"Watch him."

Selene frowned. "You don't trust him?"

Rowan returned to his book. "I don't trust easily. You shouldn't either."

A beat of silence.

"Goodnight, Silas."

She swallowed. "Goodnight."

The next day began like any other. Selene rose, dressed in silence, and followed the other cadets toward the training grounds.

But something was... different.

In Wolf Strategy, they were finally assigned partners for a team assignment. Selene braced herself, praying for someone inconspicuous. Fate, however, had other plans.

"Volkner. Dusk. You're a pair," Commander Ireth said flatly.

Her blood ran cold.

All around them, cadets turned to look, interest piqued.

She looked up just as Rowan did. His eyes met hers. Calm. Curious.

He tilted his head slightly.

And for the first time...

He smiled.

Selene blinked. Slowly.

She could feel the weight of eyes on her back. Someone near the Alpha rank table actually gasped.

Rowan only nodded once and walked past her without waiting. As if it had been expected.

She followed.

They sat at the back of the room, silent. Selene tried not to breathe too loudly. Tried to keep her pen steady. But her hands were sweating.

"Stop fidgeting," Rowan said under his breath, eyes still on the front.

She stiffened. "...I'm not."

"You are."

"Sorry."

A pause.

Then Rowan passed her the assignment sheet without looking. "We split it. I'll handle the strategy grid. You take the scenario drafts."

Selene nodded.

He didn't speak again.

But he watched.

Not in a hostile way. Not even cold. Just...studying.

She wondered, not for the first time, if he had already figured her out.
