C9 Frost and Friction

Selene's POV

Later that evening, she was heading toward the library when she heard footsteps beside her.

Kieran.

He gave her an easy smile, walking in step. "So. You and the Ice Wolf are partners now?"

She sighed. "Don't remind me."

"I heard he's not easy to work with."

"He's not."

Kieran glanced sideways. "But he's talking to you. That's new."

"...Barely."

"That's more than most get."

Selene gave him a look. "Should I be worried?"

He laughed. "Nah. If he hasn't broken your nose yet, you're probably safe."

She chuckled despite herself.

The library loomed ahead, its dark stone exterior lit by flickering enchanted lanterns. Inside, the scent of ink and vellum was strong. They parted ways at the stairs.

"You're alright, Silas," Kieran said before disappearing into the second-floor archives.

Selene stood there a moment longer, then descended into the quiet of the study halls.

That night, Rowan returned late again.

Selene pretended to be asleep, facing the wall. She listened to the soft sounds of him setting down his things, pulling off his boots. The scrape of his desk chair.

Then a whisper, just barely audible over the low whistle of wind through the high windows:

"...Good work today."

Her eyes opened slowly.

He hadn't said it to her. Not directly.

But it was enough.

The first thread of something neither of them had a name for - a fragile truce.

And in the Academy where dominance and deception ruled, that was no small thing.

By the time the Academy settled into its steady rhythm, Selene had learned to anticipate the cadets' habits - who arrived late to class, who always rushed through meals, who trained alone by choice. It made surviving easier. Familiarity bred safety.

But it also meant that disruptions were more noticeable. Like how Rowan started returning to the dorm slightly earlier. Not early enough to prompt suspicion - just early enough to make Selene hyper-aware of his presence.

He still didn't talk to her much. But she'd catch glimpses of him studying her - or rather, studying Silas - with a glance that lingered half a second too long.

Not enough to accuse. Just enough to unsettle.

She kept her head down and followed the daily schedule with precision. Still, small things began to shift. Slightly warmer meals left for her on the dorm desk when she was late. The spare training gloves she'd thought she'd lost reappearing, cleaned, by her bed.

She didn't ask questions.

He didn't offer explanations.

But the unspoken awareness was beginning to wear on her.

Selene had grown used to silence - the kind that cloaked her, protected her. But with Rowan, silence felt heavier. Denser. Like something was always on the verge of breaking.

One evening, after a grueling sparring session, she returned to the dorm limping slightly. A careless block had earned her a blow to the thigh. She wasn't bleeding, but it throbbed in protest with every step. She barely managed to shrug off her uniform jacket before collapsing onto her narrow mattress.

She didn't notice Rowan enter until she heard him pause in the doorway. She kept her head down, pretending to sort through her satchel.

"You're favoring your leg," he said.

Her shoulders tensed. "Observation skills on point, as always."

He didn't rise to the sarcasm. "You should ice it."

"Thanks, Doctor Ice Wolf. I'll keep that in mind."

Still, a few minutes later, when she stepped into the washroom, she found a cloth-wrapped bundle of cold stones resting inside a basin - enchanted to hold temperature. No note. No acknowledgment.

Just Rowan's silent fingerprints all over it.

Selene stood there a long moment, her fingers curling slightly around the edges of the cloth. Her first instinct was to reject the gesture, to remain untouched, unimpressed, unmoved. But exhaustion and pain made her relent.

She pressed the bundle against the bruise. A hiss escaped her lips. Relief followed.

When she emerged, Rowan was at his desk, back to her, scribbling something into a leather-bound notebook. The fire cast shadows along the sharp line of his jaw, making him seem more statue than man. Untouchable. Dangerous.

She returned to her bed without a word. But before she slid under the blanket, she muttered, "Thanks."

No reply came.

But the corner of his mouth shifted - a fraction. Not quite a smile. Not quite indifference.

Something else entirely.

The next few days passed in odd synchrony. They trained together with a level of precision that surprised even their instructors. Where Selene was quick, Rowan was strategic. Where he was brute strength, she was agility. Somehow, they balanced each other.

And yet... it remained unspoken.

There were still walls. Still distance.

Still Rowan watching her like she was a puzzle with one missing piece.

Then came Friday's combat evaluation - a mock mission through the Northwood perimeter, with teams assigned to navigate an obstacle course under time pressure. Selene and Rowan were paired, of course.

The test began with a siren's call. A single howl echoed through the dense trees, signaling the start.

"Stay low. West path is the fastest," Selene said as they crouched behind a fallen log.

Rowan gave a brief nod. "You take lead."

She blinked. "Seriously?"

"You're faster. I'll cover the rear."

She didn't question it. She moved.

The forest was a blur of motion - leaping over roots, dodging spell-triggered traps, ducking under swinging branches enchanted to hit with the force of a steel baton. Selene's breath burned in her lungs by the time they reached the second marker.

"Left," Rowan murmured behind her. "There's movement."

She shifted course instantly, trusting him without thinking.

It struck her then - this trust. How easily it had formed. How dangerous it could be.

They cleared the course in record time.

When the instructor announced their victory, a rare murmur of surprise echoed through the cadets. Rowan didn't gloat. Selene didn't smile.

But as they stood side by side, shoulders nearly brushing, something had shifted.

Again.

That night, she found herself in the common room, curled into one of the deep chairs near the fireplace. She needed space. Air. Quiet. Away from Rowan. Away from the thoughts she didn't want to name.

The flames danced. Shadows flickered.

"You always sit here alone."

She looked up. Kieran.

"Maybe I like being alone."

He raised an eyebrow. "Or maybe you're used to it."

She didn't reply.

He sat across from her, spinning a coin between his fingers. "Rowan looked... almost human today."

She gave him a sideways look. "That's not a compliment."

"I'm just saying - you've got a weird effect on him."

"I don't want to affect him."

Kieran smirked. "Too late."

She scowled. "Why do you care?"

"Because I've been here long enough to know that Rowan Volkner doesn't change his patterns for anyone. He doesn't train with people. He doesn't talk to people. But for some reason, you - Silas - managed to slip past that frostbite wall of his."

Selene looked into the fire. "It's not like we're friends."

"No. But something's changing. And in this place..." He leaned forward, his expression suddenly serious. "Changes get noticed. And noticed things get dangerous."

She frowned. "Are you warning me?"

"I'm saying - keep your eyes open."

Selene returned to the dorm well past lights-out. Rowan was asleep - or pretending to be. She didn't know anymore. She slid under the covers, her limbs aching, her mind full.

She turned to face the wall.

Silence stretched between them.

Then - just as she was on the edge of sleep - his voice broke through the darkness.

"You didn't freeze today."

Her brows furrowed. "What?"

"In the woods," he said, voice low. "When the trap flared. Most cadets would've frozen. You didn't."

She didn't know how to answer.

After a long moment, she said, "You didn't either."

Another pause. Then:

"I don't freeze."
