C7 The Alpha Everyone Warned Me to Fear

The lockdown of the Voss estate was absolute, a suffocating net thrown over everything I had ever known.

Soldiers clad in the stark gray colors of the High Council paced the stone perimeter walls, their drawn blades gleaming under the pale afternoon sun. They stood at the crossroads, blocked the stables, and monitored the servants' movements with unblinking, suspicious eyes. Yet, despite the heavy military presence inside our gates, the frightened whispers rippling through the kitchen and the corridors weren't about the council's guards at all. They were about the monster waiting right outside our northern borders.

"Alpha Kael Draven has officially set up camp at the northern ridge," my personal maid, Martha, whispered frantically later that morning, her hands trembling violently as she tried to adjust the lace collar of my dress. She kept glancing out the window toward the jagged mountains. "They say he brought three elite tactical squads of his pack. They aren't attacking, miss. They’re just sitting there on the high rocks, watching our valley like wolves stalking a wounded deer."

A heavy, freezing chill spread through my chest at her words. Everyone in the territory grew up hearing the horrific campfire stories about Kael Draven. The neighboring Alpha was rumored to be a ruthless, cold-blooded tyrant who ruled his pack with a fist of iron and steel. The high elders always blamed his bloodline for the brutal, bloody skirmishes that had plagued our pack borders for the last decade. According to the council, the Dravens wanted nothing more than to butcher the Voss line, seize our ancestral valleys, and claim our lucrative trading routes for themselves. He was the villain in every history book I had ever read.

Needing air, and unable to bear the suffocating gloom of the empty house a moment longer, I slipped past the distracted guards stationed near the eastern terrace. I kept my head down, using the overgrown rose bushes as cover until I broke into the tree line of the estate woods. The air out here was thick and heavy, saturated with the pungent scent of pine needles, damp earth, and the electric charge of an oncoming thunderstorm.

I rounded the trunk of a massive, ancient oak tree and stopped dead in my tracks, the breath completely leaving my lungs. A man stood in the center of the isolated clearing, his back turned to me. He was dressed in a dark, fur-lined tactical coat that accentuated his broad shoulders and towering, powerful frame. The sheer, crushing pressure of his Alpha aura radiated outward in invisible waves, so potent that the birds in the canopy above had gone completely silent. It felt like the air itself had thinned, making my heart hammer frantically against my ribs. It was him. I didn't need an introduction to know his face.

"You shouldn't be wandering out here entirely alone, Lady Elara," Kael Draven said. His voice was a deep, resonant baritone that vibrated straight through the soles of my boots and echoed in my chest. He didn't turn around to look at me; his sharp gaze remained fixed on the distant outline of my family's manor house.

My survival instincts kicked into overdrive. I stepped backward, my hand flying instinctively to my boot to grip the hilt of the small silver dagger hidden beneath my skirts. "What are you doing on Voss land, Alpha Kael? Have you come to finish the bloody conflict your pack started all those years ago? If you think our current weakness makes us easy prey, you are mistaken."

Kael slowly turned his head, looking over his shoulder. A dark, completely humorless smile touched his lips, but it was his eyes that froze me in place. They were a brilliant, piercing shade of shattered ice, completely devoid of fear, yet burning with an intense intelligence. He stepped around the oak tree, his movements impossibly fluid, quiet, and predatory for a man of his size.

"Is that truly what they told you in your gilded halls, little wolf?" Kael whispered, his voice carrying a dangerous, mocking edge as he stepped closer. "That the Dravens were the ones who started the fire? That we are the ones who want you dead?"

He stopped just a few inches from me, his overwhelming scent of winter snow and ozone completely enveloping my senses. The sheer size of him blocked out the sun, casting me in his shadow. He leaned down slightly, his icy eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying, unblinking intensity that made me forget how to breathe.

"I'm not here to fight you, Elara. If I wanted to destroy your house, I would have marched through your front gates days ago," Kael murmured, his gaze dropping for a split second to my hand, which was still tightly gripping the dagger in my boot. He let out a soft huff of amusement before looking back into my eyes. "I am here because I know exactly what you found hidden deep within your family archives three days ago. I know about the missing pages detailing the Arbiters of the Sovereign Seat."

I froze, my fingers instantly going slack against the hilt of my hidden weapon. A wave of dizziness washed over me. "How... how could you possibly know about that? No one was in that vault except me and the archivist."

Kael leaned in even closer, his jaw tightening as his expression turned deadly serious. The mockery vanished from his voice, replaced by a dark, heavy solemnity. "Because the exact same foundational pages were violently ripped from my own pack's vault last month," Kael whispered, his breath hot against my cheek. He shifted his gaze past me, looking toward the distant manor house, his eyes lingering specifically on the high window of the parlor where Darian usually kept his watch. "The council is wiping out the historical records of the old bloodlines, Elara. They are creating a blank slate so they can rule without opposition. Stop looking across my borders for the villain of your story. Your true enemy is standing right beside you in that house, not in front of you on my ridge."
