C11 THE MAN INSIDE HIS EMPIRE

Isabella Hart entered Sterling Global beside Alexander, carrying the photograph of their fathers and the copied page from the mysterious agreement. She had barely slept, and the questions in her mind had multiplied throughout the night. Somewhere inside this building worked a person who knew what Daniel Hart and Richard Sterling had agreed to years ago. That person might also know why Daniel died, and Isabella intended to discover their identity before another piece of evidence disappeared.

The reception staff greeted Alexander with their usual respect, but their attention shifted toward Isabella as they crossed the lobby. News of the marriage had spread quickly. Employees whispered behind their desks, pretending to concentrate whenever the couple passed. Isabella ignored them. She had not come to win the approval of strangers, and she refused to let the Sterling name make her feel like an outsider in a building that had once swallowed her family's business.

Alexander led her into his private office and closed the door. A folder lay on his desk beside several printed records. He explained that he had contacted the company's legal department early that morning and requested every surviving document connected to the partnership between their fathers. Some files had been transferred to an external storage system after Richard's death, while others remained restricted because of confidentiality clauses.

“Who controls access to those files?” Isabella asked.

Alexander named the head of corporate administration, Martin Cole, a senior employee who had worked with the Sterling family for nearly fifteen years. Martin had managed confidential agreements, handled sensitive company records, and maintained close relationships with both Richard and Alexander. If anyone understood the old partnership, he would be among the strongest candidates.

Isabella recognised the name. Martin had signed several financial documents she had examined while investigating Hartwell Designs. His signature appeared on a payment confirmation dated only weeks before Daniel's death. At the time, she had assumed he was simply performing his administrative duties. Now the discovery made her wonder whether the payments had been part of something much larger.

Alexander noticed her expression and asked what she had found. Isabella showed him the copied payment confirmation and pointed to Martin's signature. He examined the page carefully, then compared it with the signature on the agreement she had received overnight. They were similar, but the documents were too incomplete to establish whether Martin had witnessed the original partnership.

“We need to speak to him,” Isabella said.

“Not until I understand what these records show.”

“And while you wait, he could destroy whatever evidence remains.”

Alexander's jaw tightened. He knew she had a point, but approaching Martin without sufficient information could alert the wrong person. He decided to request a meeting under the pretext of reviewing historical company records. Isabella insisted on attending. Alexander hesitated before agreeing, reminding her that Martin might become suspicious if she revealed how much she already knew.

They spent the next hour examining the surviving documents. Most contained ordinary business transactions, but several payments had been made to companies that no longer existed. The dates matched a period when Hartwell Designs had begun experiencing unexplained financial difficulties. Some transfers had been approved by Daniel, while others carried authorisations from Sterling Global. The pattern suggested that money had moved between the businesses under circumstances neither family had publicly acknowledged.

Isabella felt anger rising as she studied the figures. Her father had worked relentlessly to keep his company alive, yet someone might have been draining its resources while making him appear responsible for its collapse. She remembered the years of financial pressure that had forced Daniel to sell valuable assets and dismiss employees. If the records proved that the losses had been deliberately engineered, the acquisition of Hartwell Designs might never have been a legitimate rescue.

Alexander watched her quietly. He admitted that he had never examined the older transactions closely because his father had assured him the partnership ended after Daniel violated their agreement. Now he wondered whether Richard had used that explanation to prevent anyone from investigating the company's financial history.

Their conversation was interrupted by a knock. Martin Cole entered carrying a slim folder, his expression polite and controlled. He was a neatly dressed man in his fifties with silver at his temples and an air of authority that suggested he was accustomed to being trusted. His gaze moved briefly toward Isabella before settling on Alexander.

“You requested the historical partnership records, sir. I have brought what remains in our system.”

Alexander thanked him and asked whether any original documents were stored elsewhere. Martin replied that the company's archives had been reorganised after Richard's death, and several older files had been transferred or disposed of according to retention policies.

“Was the original agreement between Richard Sterling and Daniel Hart among them?” Isabella asked.

Martin turned toward her. For a fraction of a second, his expression changed. The surprise was brief, but she noticed it before he recovered his composure.

“I would need to check the inventory,” he replied. “That agreement predates several of our current systems.”

Alexander explained that the document might be important to an ongoing review of the company's history. Martin nodded, promising to investigate. He placed the folder on the desk and left the office without offering any further information.

As soon as the door closed, Isabella turned to Alexander. Martin's reaction had been too quick to ignore. He might simply have been surprised by her knowledge, but his sudden hesitation suggested that the old agreement meant more to him than an ordinary corporate record.

Alexander opened the folder. Most of its contents were copies of financial summaries, but one page listed the names of employees authorised to access the partnership files. Martin's name appeared near the top, followed by a record showing that he had accessed the documents several days before Daniel's death.

Isabella leaned closer. “Why would he need to access those records just before my father died?”

“There could be a legitimate reason,” Alexander replied, although his voice lacked conviction.

“Then ask him to explain it.”

Alexander called Martin's office, but his assistant reported that he had left the building for an external meeting. Isabella immediately suspected he had gone to warn someone. Alexander instructed his security team to preserve the relevant access logs and prevent any further changes to the historical records.

Before they could continue, another message appeared on Isabella's phone. It came from the same unknown number that had sent the photograph of Daniel and Richard.

YOU ARE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTIONS. YOUR HUSBAND IS CLOSER TO THE TRUTH THAN HE ADMITS.

She showed Alexander the message. His expression darkened, but he did not dismiss it as another attempt to frighten her. Instead, he asked whether the sender had contacted her before.

Isabella admitted that several messages had arrived since she began investigating her father's death. She had kept some details to herself because she did not know whom to trust. Alexander looked hurt, although he tried to hide it behind his usual composure.

“You should have told me,” he said.

“You should have told me about the photograph of my parents.”

He had no answer. Their silence exposed the fragile foundation of their agreement. They were working toward the same truth, but both had withheld information because each feared what the other might do with it.

Isabella slipped her phone into her handbag. She could not afford to let their personal distrust distract them from the investigation. The records suggested that someone had manipulated the financial relationship between their fathers, and Martin's access made him a person they needed to question. Yet the anonymous message introduced another possibility: perhaps Martin was only one link in a larger chain.

Alexander gathered the documents and promised to continue the investigation discreetly. Isabella agreed to leave the building with him, but before they reached the elevator, she noticed Martin standing near the reception desk. He was speaking to a man she had never seen before. When Martin spotted them, he ended the conversation abruptly and walked toward a private corridor.

The stranger remained behind, watching Isabella with unmistakable interest.

She slowed her steps, trying to memorise his face. He was dressed in a dark suit and carried no visible identification. When Alexander turned to ask why she had stopped, the stranger disappeared through the glass doors leading to the underground parking area.

Isabella told Alexander what she had seen. He immediately contacted security, but the receptionist reported that no visitor matching the description had signed in that morning. Someone had entered Sterling Global without recording their name, spoken privately with Martin, and left as soon as Isabella noticed them.

The discovery changed everything. Martin might be hiding the agreement, but someone else was clearly involved, and that person appeared to know exactly when Isabella would be at the company.

As the elevator descended, Alexander looked at her with grave seriousness. He no longer seemed certain that the danger came from outside his empire.

Isabella held the photograph tightly inside her handbag. Her father had trusted someone who knew both families, and that trust had ended in tragedy. Now the same hidden network was closing around her.

She had come to Sterling Global searching for the man who could explain her father's final days. Instead, she had discovered that the person watching her might already know what she would find next.
