C4 THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
Isabella Hart had read the anonymous message so many times that morning that the words seemed permanently fixed in her mind. ASK HIM WHAT HE DID AFTER YOUR FATHER CALLED HIM THAT NIGHT. Whoever had sent it knew something about Daniel’s final hours, and they wanted her to believe Alexander Sterling was responsible. The problem was that she had no proof, and every new clue seemed to create more questions than answers.
She returned to her apartment and locked the door behind her. The photocopied agreement lay on her desk beside her father’s letter and the bank confirmations. She arranged the documents in chronological order, searching for a connection she might have overlooked. Daniel had discovered missing payments, confronted someone about suspicious financial activity, and died before he could reveal what he knew. Alexander’s name appeared on the disputed agreement, while Richard Sterling’s name appeared in Daniel’s warning. Now someone was connecting Alexander to the final night of her father’s life.
Isabella opened her laptop and searched through the photographs she had saved from her father’s old office. Most showed company celebrations, building projects, and family occasions. One image caught her attention: Daniel standing outside a restaurant beside Alexander Sterling. The photograph was slightly blurred, but the date in the corner placed it on the evening before Daniel died. Behind them stood Richard Sterling, one hand resting on Alexander’s shoulder.
She enlarged the picture. Daniel did not look angry, but his expression was serious, and Alexander appeared to be listening carefully. Richard’s face was difficult to read. Isabella wondered whether the three men had met to discuss the partnership agreement or whether Daniel had discovered the financial deception and demanded an explanation. The photograph could prove nothing by itself, yet it established that Alexander had been with her father shortly before his death.
She needed the original image. The copy on her laptop had been transferred from an old family backup, and its details were incomplete. Daniel had kept his photographs in a locked cabinet in his office, but most of the company’s remaining property had passed into Sterling Global’s control. She could ask Alexander for access, but she was no longer certain that she should tell him everything she had found.
Instead, she called Mara Ellis, her father’s former office assistant, who had helped Daniel organize his records for years. Mara remembered the restaurant photograph and confirmed that Daniel had left the office early that evening. He had seemed worried, but when she asked whether he needed help, he told her he had an important meeting and would explain everything later. He never returned to the office.
Mara also remembered a visitor who had arrived that afternoon asking for Daniel. The man had introduced himself as a representative of a financial consulting firm and carried a folder marked with the Hartwell company seal. Mara could not recall his full name, but she remembered that Daniel had looked startled when he saw him. After a brief conversation behind closed doors, the visitor left without signing the reception register.
Isabella asked whether Mara had kept the visitor’s appointment details. Unfortunately, the paper diary had disappeared during the company’s final weeks, when staff were packing files and preparing for the acquisition. Mara had assumed the records were among the documents transferred to Sterling Global. The missing diary was another gap in a story that seemed to have been carefully dismantled.
After ending the call, Isabella examined the restaurant photograph again. She noticed a small detail near the edge of the image: a fourth person standing beside the entrance, partially hidden behind a column. The figure appeared to be watching Daniel and the two Sterlings. The face was too blurred to identify, but the person held a dark folder similar to the one Mara had described.
Isabella sent the photograph to Alexander with a short message asking him to explain the meeting. She hesitated before pressing send, knowing that he might refuse to answer or warn whoever had been involved. Still, if he had been present when Daniel made his final decisions, he was the only person she could question directly.
His reply arrived several minutes later. He confirmed that the meeting had taken place but said he would rather discuss it in person. He did not explain why Daniel had called him or what they had discussed. Isabella interpreted the response as another attempt to control the information, but she agreed to meet him that afternoon because she needed the truth more than she needed to protect her pride.
At Sterling Global, Alexander appeared less composed than he had during their previous meeting. He studied the photograph and acknowledged that Daniel had contacted him about discrepancies in the Hartwell accounts. Daniel believed someone had diverted payments and altered the records to make his company appear insolvent. He wanted Alexander to examine the acquisition documents before the transaction became final.
Isabella asked why Alexander had not mentioned this earlier. He explained that Daniel had never provided the complete evidence, and their meeting had ended before they could arrange another discussion. Alexander claimed he had left the restaurant after Daniel received a phone call and stepped outside. By the time Alexander returned to the table, Daniel had gone.
The explanation sounded incomplete. Isabella wanted to know who had called her father and why Alexander had not followed him. Alexander admitted that he had been angry about Daniel’s accusations and had decided to leave rather than continue an argument. He had assumed Daniel would contact him the following morning. Instead, he learned about Daniel’s death before they could speak again.
Isabella watched him carefully. His account could be true, but he had withheld the meeting from her until she produced the photograph. She asked whether Richard had remained at the restaurant after Alexander left. Alexander said his grandfather had been there when he departed, but he could not confirm what happened afterward. He also admitted that Richard had discouraged him from reopening the Hartwell acquisition records.
That admission changed the atmosphere between them. Alexander’s family had benefited from the acquisition, and his grandfather had apparently tried to prevent further scrutiny. Isabella could not decide whether Alexander was finally being honest or simply revealing enough to make himself appear trustworthy. She gathered the photograph and prepared to leave, determined not to mistake cooperation for innocence.
Before she reached the door, Alexander received a call from his security director. Someone had requested access to the old Hartwell archive using credentials associated with a former employee. The request had been denied, but the attempt came from a terminal inside Sterling Global’s building. The security director was checking the terminal’s location and reviewing the surrounding camera footage.
Isabella immediately thought of the missing visitor Mara had described. If someone had entered Daniel’s office before his death and later searched Sterling Global’s archive, the person might have been looking for the same evidence Daniel had discovered. The connection was not yet proven, but it was too important to ignore.
Alexander offered to have security investigate the access attempt. Isabella insisted on receiving a copy of the report and warned him not to let his team erase anything, even if the evidence implicated someone close to him. He agreed, then asked her to send him the original photograph and any messages connected to the case. She promised to share the photograph but kept the anonymous messages for herself.
That evening, Isabella returned home and checked her email. An unfamiliar address had sent her a scanned page from an old visitor register. The date matched the day Daniel met Alexander and Richard at the restaurant. Beside the entry for the unidentified financial consultant was a handwritten note: ARCHIVE 317. Below it appeared the same symbol she had found on her father’s papers, a circle divided by a vertical line.
Her hands went cold. The note suggested that the visitor had been connected to a specific archive, possibly one containing the original records of the Hartwell acquisition. She searched her father’s remaining papers and found a small envelope tucked inside the back of his old notebook. A brass key lay inside, stamped with the number 317.
For several seconds, Isabella could only stare at it. Daniel had hidden the key deliberately, perhaps intending her to find it if anything happened to him. She turned it over and discovered a tiny mark near the teeth, the same divided circle that appeared on the threatening messages and altered agreement.
Her phone vibrated. The anonymous sender had returned with one final warning: YOU HAVE THE KEY. NOW FIND OUT WHO OPENED THE DOOR.
Isabella closed her fingers around the brass key. Somewhere in the records her father had left behind was the truth about the missing payments, the altered agreement, and the night he died. But someone else knew about the key, and they had been waiting for her to find it.
She had thought the next step was to confront Alexander. Now she understood that the answer might be hidden somewhere neither of them had searched.
