C16 Shadows of the Rival

The next morning, Lia arrived at the Kingsley Group office, the city still drenched in the pale glow of dawn. She felt the folder’s weight against her side—the evidence of her parents, her past, and the dangerous world she had unknowingly stepped into.

She had survived foster homes, humiliation, and years of invisibility. But the shadows surrounding her were now tangible, moving like predators just out of sight.

The First Sign

As she walked past the lobby, her instincts screamed. Someone was watching her. Not casually, but deliberately. She froze near the revolving doors, eyes scanning the polished floors and mirrored walls.

A man in a sharply tailored suit lingered across the lobby, pretending to adjust his tie. His gaze never wavered from her.

Her pulse quickened. A Kingsley rival? Her instincts screamed yes.

Before she could react, her phone buzzed. Unknown number.

“He’s watching. Don’t confront him yet. Wait for Blackwood.”

Sebastian’s name felt like a lifeline. He was distant, enigmatic, but he was aware. And right now, awareness was everything.

The Confrontation

By mid-morning, the man had made his move. During a scheduled file delivery, he intercepted her in a quiet hallway.

“You must be Lia Kingsley,” he said, voice low, dangerous. “I’ve been expecting you.”

Lia’s mind raced. Years of surviving on the streets and in foster homes had taught her to act fast. She squared her shoulders. “And you are?”

“Someone who should have ensured your disappearance remained permanent,” he said. His lips curved into a faint, cruel smile. “Instead, you survived. Impressive, but dangerous.”

She clutched the folder closer. Dangerous? Maybe. But I’m not afraid.

The man advanced, deliberately, like a predator circling prey. Lia took a step back, calculating. Her instincts screamed fight or flight.

Before he could reach her, a firm voice echoed through the hallway.

“Step away.”

Sebastian emerged from a side door, his presence commanding, eyes sharp and unyielding. The rival froze, surprised by the sudden appearance.

“This is Lia Kingsley. She stays under my protection,” Sebastian said, his voice low, dangerous.

The rival’s smile faltered. “Protection? From what?”

Sebastian’s gaze hardened. “From people who think they can threaten her without consequence.”

The man measured Sebastian silently, then smirked. “So the shadow finally decides to show itself. Interesting. I will be seeing you soon, Miss Kingsley.”

With a last, cold glance, he turned and disappeared down the hall, leaving only tension behind.

Aftermath

Lia’s hands trembled as she held the folder tighter. Sebastian approached her, calm but clearly alert.

“You shouldn’t have faced him alone,” he said, not accusatory, but factual.

“I…” Lia began, then paused. She realized she had wanted to test herself, to see if her instincts were enough. “I didn’t have a choice. He cornered me.”

Sebastian’s gaze softened slightly—not pity, but recognition. “You’re capable. But not invincible. Remember that.”

She nodded, swallowing her pride. I’ve survived so far, but this is a new world. One where survival alone won’t be enough.

New Resolve

That evening, Lia returned to her apartment, the city lights spilling across the walls. She spread the documents from the folder across the table again, each photo, article, and record now more urgent.

She wasn’t invisible anymore. Not to the world, not to her enemies, and not even to Sebastian Blackwood.

But survival had always been her strength. And now, she had purpose: uncover the truth about her family, protect herself, and navigate a dangerous world that wanted her gone.

The shadows of her rivals were real. The threats were close. But for the first time, Lia realized that she didn’t have to face them completely alone.

Somewhere, in the high towers of the Kingsley Group, Sebastian Blackwood monitored the situation, his mind calculating, protective, and—though he would never admit it—curiously invested in her survival.

And Lia, for the first time in years, felt a spark of determination that was no longer fueled purely by survival—but by the desire to reclaim her life.
