C9 The Cost of Choices
Dominic POV
Scarlett Hayes sat on the edge of her bed, the dim light of her desk lamp casting shadows across her face. Her hands trembled slightly, still processing the events of the council room earlier that night. The basement, the surveillance, Dominic's obsession, and the life-or-death choice she had been forced to make, it all weighed heavily on her.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown Number: Choices have consequences. You have one last warning before the next phase. Trust… sparingly.
Scarlett's pulse quickened. The game was no longer abstract. The stakes were real, and every step she had taken had been carefully calculated by someone who knew her better than she knew herself.
The next morning, the campus felt unusually tense. Rumors spread of secret meetings, whispered warnings, and unusual behavior from the elite group. Scarlett walked to class, noticing the way students avoided eye contact, how Julian's smirk carried more menace than amusement, and how Victor's calculating gaze followed her every move.
Alexander fell into step beside her. "You should have stayed away from the council last night," he said quietly. "You've stirred things up… more than you realize."
Scarlett's lips pressed into a thin line. "I had to know. I had to understand what Dominic is doing… and who is really controlling this."
Alexander shook his head. "Understanding won't save you. Be careful, Scarlett. The cost of a wrong move here… is too high."
Dominic Kingsley, meanwhile, observed her from his office window overlooking the campus. He had been awake most of the night, replaying her decision in the basement. That choice had fascinated him, unnerved him, and most unexpectedly, drawn him closer to her.
Julian leaned against the doorway, grinning. "She's… something else, isn't she?"
Dominic's jaw tightened. "She's dangerous," he said, the word almost a whisper. Dangerous, yes but also compelling. He couldn't stop thinking about her.
Victor's gaze was steady and cold. "Don't underestimate her. And don't forget… someone else is pulling strings. Dominic, this isn't just about her defiance. There's more at play than you see."
Dominic's eyes darkened. "Then let them watch. Let them try. Scarlett Hayes… she's mine to understand. And I will."
Later that evening, Scarlett received another anonymous message.
Unknown Number: The consequences begin tonight. Someone you trust will falter. Be ready to act,or lose everything.
Her stomach twisted. She had trusted Alexander, relied on him, confided in him, and now the warning suggested that even he might not be reliable.
At the same time, Dominic sent a message that was unmistakably his.
Dominic: Meet me in the courtyard at midnight. Alone. You have questions… I have answers. But there is a risk.
Scarlett's chest tightened. She hated the thought of meeting him alone, but she knew she needed the answers. She had to know the truth.
At midnight, the campus courtyard was silent. Fog curled around the stone paths, and the only sound was the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze. Scarlett stepped cautiously into the open space, her heartbeat loud in her ears.
Dominic emerged from the shadows, tall and imposing, yet his eyes held something raw, something unguarded. "You came," he said simply.
"I did," Scarlett replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "I need to know, who is really behind all of this? The basement, the messages, the surveillance…"
Dominic's expression flickered. "You're asking questions that could cost you dearly."
"I don't care," Scarlett said firmly. "I need the truth."
Dominic stepped closer, his dark eyes studying her face. "Very well," he said. "But be warned, the truth isn't kind. And some secrets… once revealed… change everything."
He pulled a folder from his coat, tossing it onto the stone path between them. Scarlett hesitated, then opened it. Inside were photographs, documents, and notes, evidence of the surveillance, the manipulations, and the hidden agendas of people she had trusted.
Her eyes widened. Among the documents were detailed reports on Alexander's movements, the surveillance of her dorm, and even records showing that her scholarship had been partially funded by someone with ties to Dominic's family.
"I don't understand," Scarlett whispered. "Why… why would anyone do this?"
Dominic's jaw tightened. "Because control is power, Scarlett. And some people… will do anything to maintain it. I thought you should see it for yourself… before things get worse."
Her hands trembled as she absorbed the evidence. It wasn't just Dominic's obsession or the challenges, it was a calculated game, orchestrated by people with far more influence than she had realized.
Alexander's face flashed in her mind. Was he truly a safe ally or part of a larger scheme she hadn't yet uncovered?
Suddenly, the shadows shifted. Julian stepped out from behind a nearby column, clapping slowly. "Bravo," he said, smirking. "I see the prodigy hasn't lost her nerve."
Victor emerged as well, his eyes cold. "The situation is escalating. The next move won't just be tests or messages. There will be real consequences."
Scarlett backed away, heart pounding. "You… you're all working together?"
Dominic shook his head. "Not all of us. But the lines between friend, ally, and enemy… are thinner than you think."
Before Scarlett could respond, a sudden noise erupted from the darkness a scream. She spun around to see Alexander struggling, grabbed by masked figures she didn't recognize.
"Alexander!" she shouted, running forward.
Dominic moved faster than she thought possible, intercepting the attackers. His movements were precise, almost predatory. He took down the first two in a blur, then grabbed Scarlett's hand. "Run!" he ordered.
They sprinted across the courtyard, dodging shadows and danger, the fog swirling around them like a living thing. Scarlett's mind raced, what had she walked into? Who could she trust?
Finally, they reached a hidden alcove behind the old chapel. Dominic pressed her against the stone wall, breathing heavily. "This… is only the beginning," he said, his voice low and intense. "You've survived phase two… but phase three… will test everything. Your courage, your loyalty… and your heart."
Scarlett's chest heaved, adrenaline pumping through her veins. She looked into Dominic's dark eyes and realized something terrifying and exhilarating all at once, she was more entangled with him than she had ever imagined.
And the danger wasn't over.
Not by a long shot.
