C11 Smoke and Steel

Cassidy’s POV

Cassidy stood in front of his office window again, staring down at the city that had built him. Below, the traffic moved like a sluggish river, people too busy to notice the weight of the world hanging over them. He had once been part of that flow, caught up in the chaos of building his empire. But now, everything felt... empty.

It had been days since the encounter with Aria, since the masquerade. Yet, every time he closed his eyes, all he could see was her—her smile, the spark of laughter in her eyes, the vulnerability beneath her cool exterior. The woman at the ball was one thing, but the woman sitting across from him in his office, all business and ice, was someone completely different.

He didn’t know why, but Cassidy couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something deeper between them, something hiding beneath her polished mask. And it was driving him mad.

With a sigh, he reached for his phone and checked his messages.

It was from her again.

> “Still thinking about you.”

Cassidy smirked, a strange, almost possessive feeling surging through him. The woman was smart, playing the game as she always did, but he could see the cracks now. Aria Winters was more than just an architect—she was a mystery. And he would find out every piece of it.

His phone buzzed again.

Unknown Number:

> "You're getting too close."

He stared at the message for a long moment. Aria? Or someone else entirely? Cassidy had no time for games, but something about that message felt like a warning.

This was getting interesting.

Aria’s POV

Aria was halfway through a coffee when she felt her phone buzz again. A strange sense of dread crawled up her spine. The text on her screen made her stomach twist.

> "You're getting too close."

The message had no signature, no number. Just a string of words that hit her like a punch to the gut.

She glanced around the office, but everyone seemed absorbed in their own work. It was just another day in the maze of meetings and blueprints. But something felt... off. She couldn’t shake the gnawing feeling that someone was watching, someone who knew her too well.

She checked the message again, but there was no way to trace it. No clue.

Her mind raced.

Cassidy had been relentless in his pursuit, ever since that night. He was testing her, pushing her boundaries. He wanted her to crack, to show her cards. But what if this message wasn’t about Cassidy? What if someone else was pulling the strings?

The fear she’d worked so hard to bury—her past, the shadows she’d kept hidden—began to surface. Who else knew about her? Who else had the power to threaten her future?

Focus, she told herself, setting her phone aside. But the weight of the mystery hung heavily over her, like a storm cloud waiting to break.

Cassidy’s POV

Cassidy leaned back in his chair, contemplating. The message had shaken him, but it didn’t stop him. Whoever had sent it—whether it was Aria or someone else—was clearly trying to control the narrative. But Cassidy wasn’t someone who took orders.

Aria was a challenge, and that was precisely why he couldn’t let go. She was hiding something—he could feel it in the way she moved, in the way she hesitated. There was more to this woman than a sleek architectural design. Much more.

He stood abruptly, pacing the floor. The evening was approaching, and he had plans. He wouldn’t let this go on much longer. Aria would crack. They both would.
