C12 A Shadow in the Dark

Aria’s POV

Aria couldn’t sit still. She had spent hours pacing around her apartment, running through every scenario in her head, but none of them felt like the answer. The mysterious message was like a needle constantly poking at her, the fear of exposure creeping closer with every passing minute.

It wasn’t Cassidy who terrified her—it was the shadow from her past that lurked just beyond her reach. The part of her life she’d buried so deeply she thought it was gone for good. But that message had dragged it all back to the surface.

Her phone buzzed again. She froze.

Not Cassidy. Not this time.

The text on the screen was simple, yet it made her blood run cold:

> “I’m watching you.”

Her heart skipped a beat. She knew exactly who this was. But how had they found her? She’d taken every precaution to keep her identity hidden, and yet here they were, pulling the strings from the shadows.

She couldn’t risk anyone else getting hurt. Not Cassidy. Not her career. No one.

Aria stood up, her hands shaking as she grabbed her coat. She couldn’t wait around anymore. She needed answers. And if that meant confronting the past she’d spent so long trying to forget, then so be it.

She didn’t bother locking the door behind her as she left her apartment, her mind set on one destination—the one place she knew where all of this had started.

---

Cassidy’s POV

Cassidy’s mind was a whirlpool of thoughts as he sat behind his desk, staring at the email he had just received. There were no attachments, no clear explanations, just a simple phrase that made him pause:

> "The truth is closer than you think."

Whoever had sent this wasn’t afraid of him, and they sure as hell weren’t afraid of Aria. Cassidy’s instincts told him that Aria was at the center of all of this. He could feel it. She was hiding something, and whether it was her past or something more, he wasn’t going to let it remain a mystery for long.

But something else was pulling at him—a strange sense of urgency. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Aria was slipping further away from him. She was already a mystery to him, but now, she was becoming a danger. To herself. And to everyone around her.

His phone buzzed again. Cassidy’s eyes darted to the screen.

It was her.

> "Meet me at the old warehouse. I need to explain."

He was already on his feet, grabbing his coat. The message had come just moments ago, and he could feel the pull to follow, to finally get the answers he craved. But as he made his way to the door, another thought struck him. What if she was in trouble? What if everything was connected in ways he didn’t understand?

He didn’t waste another second. Cassidy’s car roared to life as he sped through the city streets, the cold night air biting at his face.

Aria’s POV

The abandoned warehouse loomed before her, a hollow shell of metal and stone that had once been a thriving part of the city’s industrial district. It was dark, eerie, with only the faintest glow from a nearby streetlight casting long shadows across the cracked pavement.

Aria took a deep breath, the cool air settling in her lungs. She didn’t know what she was expecting, but it wasn’t this. The place felt like a tomb, a place where secrets were buried long ago.

The sound of footsteps echoed from behind her, and she turned sharply.

Cassidy.

His presence was undeniable, and yet, there was something different in the way he stood there. The man who had once seemed unshakable was now tense, as if the weight of this place had pulled something out of him. He was no longer just the billionaire CEO. He was a man on the edge, just like her.

"Aria," Cassidy’s voice was low, almost a whisper in the cold night. "What’s going on? Why bring me here?"

"I needed you to understand," she said, her voice shaking despite herself. "Everything you think you know about me—about this project—it’s all a lie. You’re not just dealing with an architect, Cassidy. You’re dealing with someone who has secrets too big to ignore."

Cassidy took a step forward, his expression hard, but something flickered behind his eyes—concern, curiosity, maybe even a hint of fear.

"Tell me," he urged.

The warehouse felt like it was closing in on them as she hesitated. The weight of her past was too heavy to carry anymore. She couldn’t hide anymore. Not from him.

"I wasn’t just hired for the design," Aria began, her words a whisper lost in the wind. "I’m here because of you. You’ve been a part of my life for much longer than you realize."

Cassidy’s brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

Before she could explain further, the sharp sound of tires screeching against the asphalt cut through the night. Cassidy’s hand instinctively reached for his jacket, a silent gesture to prepare for what might be coming. Aria’s heart raced.

This was no coincidence.
