C13 The Truth in the Shadows
Aria’s POV
The screech of tires echoed through the empty streets, sending a jolt of panic through Aria’s chest. She could feel Cassidy’s presence next to her, but her mind was locked on the approaching danger. She could already sense that things were about to spiral out of control.
“What’s happening?” Cassidy demanded, his voice sharp and filled with an edge of suspicion.
Aria didn’t have time to answer. The car that had screeched to a halt in front of them wasn’t just any car—it was a sleek black vehicle, one that had been following her for days. The tinted windows gave no clue as to who was inside, but Aria knew. She had seen the driver before, years ago.
She had been so careful, so precise in hiding her past. But now, it seemed that no matter how far she ran, the shadows would always catch up with her.
Before she could process it, the car door swung open, and a man stepped out, his figure cutting through the darkness like a knife. Aria’s stomach sank. She recognized him instantly—Jonas Pierce, a name from her past that she’d hoped to bury forever.
Jonas’s gaze locked onto her, cold and calculating. His smirk was all too familiar, one that had haunted her dreams during the worst of her memories.
“Aria,” he said in a tone that sent a chill down her spine, “I see you’ve brought your little billionaire friend along for the ride. How... interesting.”
Cassidy’s posture shifted, his protective instincts kicking in, but Aria stepped forward before he could act. “Jonas,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady, “what do you want?”
Jonas’s eyes flickered with amusement. “What do I want? That’s a question, isn’t it? I want everything you’ve been hiding, Aria. And now, I want him.” He motioned toward Cassidy with a casual flick of his wrist. “You’ve been playing a dangerous game, and it’s time to collect.”
Aria’s heart hammered in her chest as she turned to Cassidy, seeing the confusion and concern in his eyes. She didn’t know how to explain this—how to explain Jonas—without bringing everything crashing down around her. But she couldn’t lie anymore.
“Cassidy, he’s… He’s someone I thought I could escape, but I couldn’t. I never meant for you to get caught in this.”
Cassidy’s jaw clenched. “Escape? What are you talking about? Who is this man, Aria?”
Jonas chuckled darkly, stepping closer. “Oh, you haven’t told him? How quaint. Let me enlighten you, Mr. Lorne.” He turned to Cassidy, his smile widening. “Aria Winters, the woman you’re so eager to chase—she’s not just a simple architect. She’s a former associate of mine. An associate who owes me a great deal of money. A debt that has yet to be paid.”
Aria flinched as Cassidy’s gaze snapped back to her, disbelief in his eyes. “What? Is that true?”
Jonas’s laugh was low and sinister. “I’ve been keeping tabs on her for years. But it’s clear you’re just another obstacle, Cassidy. One that will be easily removed.”
Aria’s stomach twisted in knots. She wanted to shout, to make him stop, but every word he said was another step closer to everything unraveling. Cassidy’s glare turned icy as he stepped forward, positioning himself between her and Jonas.
“Stay the hell away from her,” Cassidy growled.
Jonas didn’t flinch. Instead, he took a step closer to Cassidy, his smirk widening. “You really think you can protect her? You have no idea who you're dealing with. Aria is mine. And if I have to burn this whole damn city to get what’s owed to me, I will.”
The tension between the two men was palpable, the air thick with the promise of violence. Aria knew Cassidy was trying to keep his cool, but she could see the fury building in him. He wasn’t a man who took threats lightly. But Jonas wasn’t going to back down.
“You need to leave, now,” Cassidy said, his voice low and lethal. “Or I’ll make you leave.”
Jonas’s eyes glinted with amusement. “We’ll see about that.” He signaled to the men in the car, and before Aria could react, two more figures emerged, towering over them.
Aria’s pulse raced, her mind spinning. There was only one way out, and it wasn’t through force.
“Cassidy, listen to me!” she shouted, grabbing his arm before he could make a move. “This isn’t your fight! You don’t understand what’s at stake.”
Cassidy looked at her, his eyes filled with determination, but there was no hesitation in his voice. “I don’t care. I’m not letting anyone hurt you.”
Before either of them could react further, the sound of sirens filled the air, growing louder with every passing second. A police car rounded the corner, its lights flashing in the darkness.
Jonas cursed under his breath, clearly surprised by the sudden intervention. He turned on his heel, signaling his men to retreat.
“This isn’t over,” he hissed, his eyes narrowing as he took a step back. “You can run, Aria, but you’ll never escape me.”
As Jonas and his men disappeared into the night, Cassidy pulled Aria closer, his hand gripping her tightly. “What the hell is going on, Aria? Who are these people? And why didn’t you tell me?”
Aria’s throat tightened, but she couldn’t hide anymore. Not from him.
“I’ll explain everything. But not here. Not now. Just—please, Cassidy. Trust me.”
The sirens blared in the distance as the police car slowed to a stop. Cassidy nodded, but his expression was still a mix of disbelief and anger.
“Fine. But this doesn’t end tonight, Aria,” he said, his voice softening. “We’re getting to the bottom of this. Together.”
Aria didn’t know whether that was a promise or a threat, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like she wasn’t alone.
