C9 Chapter 9

Chapter Nine: New Partner

"I'm back," Mason announced after arriving from the gym.

"Welcome back. I hope you didn't exhaust yourself at the gym because we've got work to do," I said, handing him a bottle of water.

"Work?" Mason asked.

"Yeah, follow me. I've got something to show you," I said, leading the way to my secret underground room.

"Whoa, I didn't know you had an underground room inside your house. It's so huge and sophisticated," Mason replied, walking around the room, admiring its detailed structure and building techniques.

"Alright, Mason, you're going to have more than enough time to admire the room later. But first, I want you to meet someone," I said.

"And who might you be?" Mason asked, looking at the man closely.

"Hola, I'm Rowen Driscoll," Rowen replied, extending his hand for a shake.

"I'm Mason Bennett, nice to meet you," Mason replied.

"From now on, Rowen will be assisting us in our mission to bring down Vandel," I said after the introduction.

"Excuse me, Jay, may I have a word with you in private?" Mason asked, his expression showing some reservations about the recent development.

"Certainly, Mason," I replied, understanding his need for discretion. "Let's step aside for a moment."

As we found a secluded spot, Mason began to voice his concerns. "I don't mean to offend, Jay, but I am curious about the man you introduced as Rowen. Who exactly is he? Where does he hail from? Does he hold any occupation or is he merely a willing participant? And why has he chosen to join us? I hope you understand my need for clarity in this matter."

I paused for a moment, appreciating Mason's desire for a more elaborate explanation. "Please, have a seat," I offered, as we both settled down to discuss the matter in a more refined manner.

"Allow me to recount an incident that occurred twelve years ago at LA Marie federal prison," I began, aiming to provide Mason with a complete understanding of our origins. "On that fateful day, I found myself compelled to save the life of Harvey Elrod, notwithstanding our initial difficulties. In that moment, I realized no matter the extent of his transgressions, his life deserved preservation."

"Afterward, Harvey made a solemn vow, offering his assistance in any future endeavor. Impressed yet skeptical, I did not presume he would honor his promise. However, six years ago, fate rekindled our connection when Harvey reached out, having regained his position as one of the leaders of 'Prestamista De Dinero'—an organization facilitating loans to criminals for the purpose of financing their illicit enterprises, later subject to interest accrual."

"Remaining true to his word, Harvey extended his aid, unaware that my peaceful existence with my family had been shattered by their untimely demise. Adrift in my sorrow and lacking direction, I mustered the courage to seek refuge in his support. He generously provided me with substantial funds, enabling the acquisition of this abode and the procurement of vital equipment essential to our mission. It was during this exchange that I expressed my need for an unwavering and capable ally to infiltrate Vandel's organization undercover. Hence, he introduced me to Rowen, an individual whose unwavering loyalty and multifaceted skill set were honed through a lifetime of partnership with Harvey."

I met Mason's gaze, hoping my detailed explanation would assuage his uncertainties. "Rest assured, Mason, Rowen's presence here signifies not only a debt of gratitude but also a symbiotic relationship—a chance for him to extend the kindness he once received. He embodies unswerving trustworthiness and possesses a prowess in combat, combining with an extensive knowledge of the black market. In essence, he embodies the exact qualities we require to achieve our goals. Harvey sent him to us precisely for this purpose."

Taking a moment to absorb this information, Mason nodded thoughtfully. "Jay, I understand the reasoning behind your decision. However, despite these assurances, I implore us to maintain our vigilance. No matter our circumstances, we should remain ever watchful and not let our guard down."

"Your caution is duly noted, Mason," I replied, appreciating his astute sensibilities. "I assure you, we shall exercise the utmost prudence. As for Rowen, considering the arduous journey he endured to join us from Hub City, it would be prudent to grant him some well-deserved rest before involving him in our plans. Our path ahead is fraught with challenges, and we must be prepared to face them head-on."

"Agreed," Mason concurred, understanding the exigency of the situation.

The next day, with a sense of purpose, the three of us gathered, acutely aware of the monumental task that lay before us. "Gentlemen, dismantling Vandel's empire will be no easy feat," I declared, emphasizing the gravity of our mission. "He is a seasoned veteran in this nefarious industry, a formidable force endowed with power, skill, and a vast network of connections. Undertaking this endeavor can be equated to a perilous gamble, as our very survival hinges on meticulous strategy and calculated steps."

"Indeed, to overcome this formidable adversary, we must craft a meticulously planned approach. We must anticipate his moves, outwit him at every turn, and ultimately bring about his downfall," I affirmed, exuding confidence in our abilities.

Mason interjected, seeking further insights. "How do we intend to acquire the necessary information?"

"With painstaking effort, I managed to procure an intricate map, detailing the precise locations of Vandel's warehouses scattered throughout El Paso. Furthermore, a comprehensive ledger provides invaluable information about potential clients, as well as their competitors and suppliers," I revealed, emphasizing the significance of these assets.

Mason reacted with surprise. "How were you able to obtain those?"

"I acquired them from a former colleague, De Ahkursta, who—unfortunately—is no longer with us. Vandel saw to his demise," I stated, a tinge of sadness present in my voice.

Mason pressed for clarification. "Did you...?"

"No, Mason," I interjected, assuaging his concern. "I did not lay a hand on him. There was no need. His fate had already been sealed. Vandel's cruel methods are well known amongst his peers, and De Ahkursta's demise was a testament to his ruthlessness. The news of his death, numbingly displayed with his severed hands and an ominous message, 'Death to Traitors,' scrawled in blood, spoke volumes. Only Vandel possesses the audacity to commit such a brazen act. Thus, it was abundantly clear who orchestrated his demise."

Mason absorbed this information before shifting his focus. "So, what is our plan of action?"

"Given the limited surveillance infrastructure in El Paso, I intend to utilize my hacking skills to access the available surveillance cameras, allowing us to monitor the drug-related activities in the area," I explained, sharing my strategy.

Rowen interjected, concerned about our access to weaponry. "However, one issue remains pressing. We lack adequate weaponry. Attempting to procure any in El Paso would be nigh impossible. Our only option is to exercise caution and restraint, waiting for the opportune moment to strike when we possess the upper hand."

"I concur, Rowen," I replied, acknowledging the limitation. "Safety must be our priority until such time as we can secure the necessary arsenal. Survival is key."

Raising his fist, Mason suggested a toast. "To fraternidad," he declared.

Responding in kind, I extended my own fist. "To fraternidad," I echoed, sealing our pact of loyalty and unity.

"Well then, what can I say? To fraternidad," Rowen chimed in, joining our gesture to complete the circle of trust.
