C12 Where Fear and Ambition Entwine
“What nonsense are you spewing?!” Miranda screamed at her husband, her hand crashing onto the table as she stared at him with blazing fury. “I demand an explanation!”
“Ahem”. Raison cleared his throat softly, cutting through the tense, warlike atmosphere. “Honey, we might go bankrupt if we don’t take a loan as soon as possible.”
“Since when did things get this bad, and you couldn’t even share it with me?!” She clutched her head, her voice cracking as she screamed. “And now the only solution you can think of is to get a loan from Jake Kirk?!”
At that instant, Cleopatra, having overheard everything, sprinted into the study, her heart pounding. “Mom! What’s wrong?!”
Miranda slowly turned her head and froze at the sight of her daughter. “Baby, come here.” She pulled Cleopatra into a warm hug, patting her hair gently. “It’s nothing, your father and I were just having a minor conversation. Isn’t your debut today? Why don’t you go get dressed? We’ll take you—”
Before Miranda could finish, Raison’s voice cut through sharply. “We have to go to the meeting, it’s time.”
Just then, Miranda’s expression shifted in an instant, her eyes betraying the storm of worry she desperately tried to hide as she forced a gentle, reassuring smile for Cleopatra.
“Alright. Honey, go on. We’ll wrap up the meeting as fast as we can and come meet you at the venue, okay?” Her tone was soft, filled with warmth and concern.
Exactly four hours after they left, Cleopatra emerged from the bathroom, having drawn herself back together only to be greeted by her phone buzzing violently, the screen alight with unanswered calls and unread messages. She answered the next call.
“Hello, Mom.”
“Am I speaking to the daughter of Miranda and Raison?” a cold, unfamiliar voice asked.
“Yes, who is this? And why are you using my mom’s phone?” Cleopatra’s voice wavered with growing dread.
“I’m afraid you’ll need to come to the morgue at Bluecrest Medical Center,” the voice said carefully, each word measured, heavy. “Your parents were involved in a serious accident. The impact was catastrophic due to the speed involved.” A brief pause followed, thick and suffocating. “They… they did not survive.”
“No… no!” Her chest tightened as her heart hammered violently, pain shooting down her spine. Tears blurred her vision while cold sweat broke across her body.
She jolted awake, a scream ripping from her throat. “No!” Her hands flew to her chest, her skin slick with sweat, her body shaking under the weight of a raw, unrelenting terror as though the world around her had dissolved into fire and shadow.
Her torment ran deeper than the prospect of returning to the modeling world. Beneath it lay the brutal truth of her parents’ deaths, resurfacing in the guise of a nightmare, clawing relentlessly at the core of her soul.
“Why was I dreaming of the exact same events that had already happened? it feels like I’m betraying them.” Seated on the bed, she stared into nothingness. “I’m sorry. I know I’m not supposed to do this, but there’s no other way I can think of.”
The devastating truth was that Cleopatra’s parents had died in that accident, rushing to her debut, desperate not to miss the day that should have celebrated her. She carried the weight of that loss like a living wound, haunted by the relentless conviction that she had, in some way, cut their lives short.
It was her first day at INK Model, yet fear lingered like a shadow across her chest, the subtle tendrils of PTSD threatening to claim parts of her she scarcely understood. Every step forward became a battle with herself, a war between the desire to move on and the pull of grief. Still, she refused to yield. Summoning every fragment of her strength, she forced herself onward.
She moved shakily into the bathroom, each motion heavy with exhaustion and lingering dread. After bathing and dressing, she stepped out of her apartment, climbed into a waiting car, and began the journey to INK Model every mile, a quiet struggle between the promise of her future and the ghosts of her past.
Upon arriving at INK, Cleopatra’s eyes were immediately drawn to Katie, who stood on the pavement by the stairs. She had not expected to see anyone yet there she was, waiting as if for her alone. A surge of concern tightened Cleopatra’s chest. She quickly settled the fare, stepped from the car, and moved toward her, each step heavy with a mounting, almost tangible anticipation.
“Hi. Katie, why are you out here?” she asked, her voice tinged with surprise, eyes widening as she took in the unexpected sight.
“I was waiting for Galvin,” she replied
“Galvin? Who’s that?” Cleopatra asked, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
“Ah, my boyfriend don’t worry, I’ll introduce you soon,” Katie said, her smile radiant, eyes sparkling with excitement as her fingers brushed lightly through Cleopatra’s hair. “You’ll be thrilled he’s the second son of Mr. Ace, the owner of Imperium Luxe Couture. Before long, you’ll be modeling for their entire fashion line. Can you even begin to imagine it?”
“That’s incredible,” Cleopatra murmured, her voice tinged with awe.
In an instant, Katie beckoned her forward, and together they glided through the sleek, glass-paneled halls of another towering INK Model skyscraper. The polished floors reflected their swift steps, while sunlight filtered through the windows, casting geometric patterns across the walls.
They stepped into the elevator, its quiet hum a steady undercurrent as it carried them upward. When the doors slid open, they moved down the polished hallway, following Katie to the door she opened with a graceful push.
The moment Cleopatra stepped inside, her breath caught. Before her stretched a vast, sun-drenched room, its walls lined with racks of shimmering gowns and shelves overflowing with designer shoes that sparkled like scattered gemstones. Plush chairs and ornate mirrors punctuated the space, elevating it from a mere dressing room to a sanctuary of style, a palace in miniature, built for royalty. Every detail radiated elegance, leaving Cleopatra suspended between awe and disbelief.
Katie turned to Cleopatra, her warm smile brightening the room. “This will be your workspace for the time being,” she said, sweeping a hand toward the expansive space around them.
“Once everything is set, you’ll move on to full-time modeling. But for now just hang in there.”
“Sure,” Cleopatra replied, a flicker of anticipation igniting in her chest. Her mind raced, already plotting the steps she would take to claim her place in this new world.
Suddenly, a young man in his twenties came bounding toward Katie, his face lit with an eager, almost boyish enthusiasm.
“Hi, Director! We’re thrilled to see you!”
Katie’s smile softened, a quiet warmth glowing in her eyes, as if the gesture alone could ease the tension of the room. “Hi, Joss. This is a very special friend of mine, Cleopatra.” Her voice carried a gentle authority, tempered with pride. “She’ll be working with you as a wardrobe assistant, so I expect you’ll take good care of her.”
Joss froze, eyes widening as if he had been struck by lightning. “Wait, director, did I hear that right? She’s going to work as a model or just a dresser?!”
Katie’s lips curved into a calm, knowing smile, almost teasing. “She’ll be dressing the models,” she said softly, as if reading the disbelief written plainly across his face.
“Uhh…” Joss stammered, words failing him. Confusion and shock battled across his features, his bright smile faltering into stunned silence. Cleopatra felt the weight of his gaze, a mixture of scrutiny and incredulity, and for a moment, the room seemed to hold its breath.
In that moment, Joss’s gaze lingered on Cleopatra, his eyes alight with quiet curiosity as he took in her features, her bearing, and the subtle aura that seemed to radiate from her. For a heartbeat, he hesitated, caught between intrigue and uncertainty, as if trying to decipher the presence before him.
Peace settled in that very moment but it was fragile, hanging by a thread, as if the next heartbeat might shatter it completely.
