C15 The Weight of Ambition

Her hands slowly rose to her face, fingers pressing hard against the bridge of her nose, as though she could physically crush the fear tightening its cold grip around her heart. She inhaled slowly, letting the chill air fill her lungs before releasing it in a quiet, trembling breath that traced a faint shiver down her spine.

Her voice fell to a whisper, heavy with bitter self-reproach.

“I can’t even save myself in front of a camera, how am I supposed to protect Calvin and Katie? I’m pathetic.”

The words tasted like rust and darkness, corroding from within as they slipped from her lips.

Time seemed to stretch, heavy, suffocating, and silent.

Then, deliberately, almost ritualistically, she moved.

She rose with controlled precision and walked to the sink, opening the tap. Cold water rushed out in a clear, relentless stream. She cupped her hands and let the icy liquid spill across her face, the shock of it cutting through the chaos in her mind like a blade slicing through fog.

Leaning closer to the mirror, she met her own reflection.

Not the frightened, fragile girl she feared.

But the woman the world expected her to be.

Slowly, her shoulders straightened. Spine locked. Breath steadied.

“I can do this,” Cleopatra whispered.

Her fingers curled tightly into a fist as she thrust it toward the mirror, heartbeats roaring like distant thunder. Fire kindled in her gaze wild, determined, unyielding as though something deep within her refused to kneel to fear again.

When she finally stepped into the studio, the shoot was drawing to a close. The photographer advanced toward her, unaware of the tempest simmering in Guinevere’s gaze. Guivenere’s eyes tracked him with razor-sharp precision, each glance a silent blade, cutting through the air with unspoken judgment. The atmosphere around her seemed to pulse, charged and taut, heavy with the unyielding promise that she would no longer endure her presence alone, a declaration, every fiber of her being poised against compromise.

“Hey,” he said, a teasing smile tugging at his lips as he leaned slightly closer. “Sorry for snapping that shot. Are you allergic to cameras, or do you just not like being caught by me?” His eyes sparkled with mischief, daring her to respond.

“No, I’m fine with cameras,” she replied softly, almost sheepishly. “It’s just the flash hit me like a shock.” A delicate, nervous smile curved her lips, and her fingers twisted and fidgeted in subtle, restless motions, betraying the faint tremor of nerves she tried so hard to hide.

“Alright, if you say so. Why don’t you try modeling? I can give you some free shots,” he said, voice casual but filled with amusement. “I mean, you’re so natural, so beautiful, like a doll.”

“You flatter me,” she murmured, her lips parting gently. “I’m not ready, not yet. But I promise, when I am, you’ll be the first to know.”

Without hesitation, he extended his card with confident ease. Cleopatra accepted it with a poised nod. [Moonshine Photography,] it reads in bold, elegant letters.

“Just call me Shine,” he teased, a glint of charm in his eyes. “I don’t mind shining all my light on the path you walk.”

“Haha, oh really?” Cleopatra’s laugh was soft, almost musical, carrying a touch of amusement.

“Yeah. Come by my studio I’ll make sure you shine brighter than anyone else,” he said, his tone playful yet certain.

She waved the card with a casual grace. “I’ll keep this.”

“Alright, I’ll be waiting for you, doll,” he said, giving her a final wave before turning away.

Cleopatra’s lips lifted in a calm, effortless smile, unbothered by Moonshine’s flirtation.

As she turned away, Guinevere approached, her presence immediate and precise, cutting through the space with quiet authority. Cleopatra lifted a hand in greeting as Guinevere drew near, yet Guinevere’s gaze burned with unasked questions, her restraint barely containing an envy so palpable it seemed to thicken the air between them.

Guinevere halted, hesitation flickering across her features.

“Hmm, I should go now,” she said at last, returning the gesture with a polite wave and a carefully composed smile. But the façade faltered. A fleeting glint of jealousy surfaced in her eyes, betraying the discipline she clung to, her true emotions seeping through the fragile veneer of civility.

“Okay,” Cleopatra replied evenly. Her voice had barely faded when the sensor-activated glass parted and sealed with a soft hum, severing the moment and leaving behind a delicate, uneasy stillness one that lingered long after Guinevere’s presence had withdrawn.

Her manager moved with urgent precision, slipping past her to intercept Guinevere, leaving the charged air thick and heavy, humming with unspoken tension.

Once inside the car, Guinevere slowly withdrew the finger she had been unconsciously biting, a small habit that revealed the tension she struggled to hide. She leaned back against the leather seat, her eyes narrowing as a quiet murmur slipped from her lips, the words laced with restrained frustration.

“Why now of all times?” she muttered.

“When I haven’t even secured my place in this industry yet.”

Her thoughts churned violently, crashing into one another like restless waves she could neither calm nor control. Jealousy gnawed at the edges of her composure, frustration coiled tightly in her chest, and a faint, unsettling dread settled deep in her stomach, one she refused to acknowledge.

The air inside the car suddenly felt suffocating, heavy with the weight of her spiraling thoughts.

“How did she even end up working there?” Guinevere whispered, disbelief sharpening every syllable. “It can’t be Calvin or Katie. If it were them, they would have debuted her as a model immediately, not hiding her away in a meaningless position like that.”

Her jaw clenched, a quiet but dangerous fury beginning to simmer beneath her calm exterior.

Abruptly, she straightened, withdrawing her hand completely as her gaze snapped toward the driver’s seat.

“Theo,” she said, her voice crisp, cold, and commanding.

“I want you to find out exactly how Cleopatra managed to get that job.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Theo replied at once, dipping his head in acknowledgment, his grip on the steering wheel tightening ever so slightly.

“Damn you, Cleo…” Guinevere hissed, the last threads of her composure finally snapping.

Her eyes widened, unfocused and burning, as the obsession she had fought so hard to bury surged violently to the surface.

“He’s mine,” she whispered hoarsely, the words trembling with raw possessiveness. “I won’t let you take him away from me. Never.”

She bit down hard on her left thumb, the smooth ceramic nail digging into her skin until a sharp sting shot through her nerves.

The pain grounded her, anchoring the chaos raging inside her mind.

Yet her gaze drifted, distant and hollow, as if she were staring at something far beyond the confines of the car. Beneath the fragile calm she forced onto her face, desperation twisted and churned dark, consuming, and dangerously unresolved.

Meanwhile, back at the studio.

The atmosphere around Cleopatra had subtly changed.

One by one, the staff began gathering near her, drawn in almost unconsciously. Murmurs of admiration rippled through the room, soft praises, impressed whispers, quiet amazement that carried through the steady hum of equipment and the glare of studio lights.

“She’s incredible…”

“Look at her presence…”

Even under the harsh brightness of the set, Cleopatra seemed untouched by the chaos around her. She stood there with an effortless grace, calm and radiant, as though the world itself had paused to acknowledge her presence.

It was as if the entire studio had begun to revolve around her not because she demanded attention but because attention simply could not resist finding her.

“You’re truly beautiful,” Pheebs admitted at last, her eyes widening in genuine disbelief. “I was honestly shocked when Joss said you’d be working with us, not as a model.”

“When I first saw you,” another staff member chimed in, awe coloring their voice, “all I could think was… who is this beauty?”

“Indeed,” Joss added, smiling at Cleopatra, a faint flush warming his cheeks. “She’s like a delicate porcelain doll, but impossible to overlook.”

Before Cleopatra could respond, a hand shot out from the shadows, gripping her arm with sudden force.

Her heart skipped a beat. Who—?
