C9 She Had Selective Amnesia

It was obvious.

Mu Wanxing thought to herself.

How could Xu Qiangwei, as a mother, not know about her own son's situation? So many days had passed without a word from her. Had she not even spoken to Wang Lan to get an update before coming over today?

Seeing Mu Wanxing's silence, Xu Qiangwei understood. "Wanxing, I'm really sorry for what you're going through. I have no idea how Yichen ended up like this... I suspect he might have amnesia."

"What? Amnesia?" Mu Wanxing was taken aback by the word.

Come to think of it, Soong Yichen's symptoms did resemble amnesia. He didn't remember how deeply they had once been in love. But something felt off. "Mom, you say Yichen has amnesia, but why hasn't he forgotten everything? He still recognizes me, but just forgot our past together. If it were true amnesia, wouldn't he forget my name and not recognize me at all?"

"Isn't there something called... selective amnesia?" Xu Qiangwei suggested.

Mu Wanxing was stunned.

That concept did exist, but why had Soong Yichen forgotten only the good times with her? Selective amnesia supposedly erases unpleasant memories. Could it be that, subconsciously, he saw her as a blemish?

Seeing Mu Wanxing's shaken expression, Xu Qiangwei continued, "I'll go find Yichen later and take him to the hospital for a check-up. Let's see what the doctors have to say."

Mu Wanxing was suddenly at a loss for what to think as she watched Xu Qiangwei leave.

Two days later, Xu Qiangwei called, "Wanxing, I took Yichen for a check-up. The doctor said his symptoms are similar to selective amnesia. It's not normal for someone to suddenly change so drastically, to fall for someone else and completely forget their previous partner."

"But didn't Yichen say Kin Qier was his first love?" Wanxing asked uncertainly.

Xu Qiangwei scoffed, "First love? I've never even heard of Kin Qier before. As his mother, I know the people Yichen associates with. Kin Qier is just making things up."

Wanxing felt confused.

"Wanxing, let me be honest with you. Kin Qier is trouble. There's no way I can let her into the Soong family. Besides, you know she has a heart condition. People with heart problems shouldn't have children. If Yichen gets tangled up with her, who will inherit the Soong family's legacy?"

Xu Qiangwei laid it all out.

Wanxing felt a mix of emotions; she couldn't be the one to carry on the Soong family line either.

Xu Qiangwei continued, "Wanxing, it took a lot of effort to get Yichen to the hospital."

Now that you know Yichen has lost his memory, try to be patient and stay close to him. Bring his heart back from Qier, or else both Yichen and our family will be ruined by her..."

Xu Qiangwei said a lot, essentially urging Mu Wanxing to do everything she could to keep Soong Yichen close. She promised to help her, and perhaps fearing Wanxing's refusal, she didn't give her a chance to speak before hanging up the phone.

Wanxing felt torn. Should she tell Xu Qiangwei about her terminal illness? But now, with the doctors saying Yichen likely has amnesia, it means his past feelings for her were genuine. She wanted to try, to relive the beautiful moments she once shared with Yichen. He may have forgotten, but her love never faded, otherwise, she wouldn't feel so heartbroken and hopeless.

Moreover, Qier's background was unclear, and who knows what schemes she might have? Wanxing couldn't let her succeed. If she told Xu Qiangwei about her illness, she would surely lose the chance to be with Yichen. In her limited time, she decided to be selfish just this once.

"What happened to your hand?"

Perhaps Xu Qiangwei's words had an effect, as Yichen came home unusually early, just before dinner. Seeing her bandaged right hand, he looked at her with curiosity.

Mu Wanxing pressed her lips together; she didn't want to revisit the events of that night or confront him about his actions.

Soong Yichen seemed to understand. "Your hand isn't in great shape. Let me help you with the food."

Even though it was a small gesture, to Wanxing, it felt significant. "Thank you."

Yichen's expression softened. After dinner, he washed some fruit, sliced it, and brought it to her on a plate.

"I heard I might have amnesia. Did we...?" Yichen hesitated.

Wanxing felt a mix of emotions. "I have some photos on my phone. Take a look."

Her phone held sweet photos from their past trips and records of their affectionate conversations. She had never had the chance to show him these before.

With a sense of hope, she handed him the phone. Yichen hesitated for a moment, then took the phone upstairs.

Wanxing wanted to give Yichen some space. After finishing the fruit, she went to the study. Her hand was still healing, and she had some work to catch up on.

Working one-handed was tough, especially with her other hand still sore. Plus, she was anxious about Yichen's reaction. She didn't stay in the study long.

As she approached the bedroom, she heard a thud from inside, like a phone hitting the floor.

Mu Wanxing felt a sudden tightness in her chest as she quickly pushed the door open. Her phone lay on the floor, and Soong Yichen sat on the bed, pressing his forehead with a pained expression.

“What’s wrong?” Mu Wanxing asked, concerned.

It took a moment for Soong Yichen to lower his hand from his head. “I’ve looked at so much, but I can’t remember anything.”

“It’s okay, don’t think about it. Just rest for now,” Mu Wanxing said, her heart aching for him.

Soong Yichen nodded, looking a bit weary. “I’m going to take a shower.”

“Alright.” Mu Wanxing began tidying up the bed with one hand.

Soong Yichen’s gaze fell on Mu Wanxing’s bandaged hand, and he quickly looked away. He couldn’t admit to losing his memory about that part.

After coming out of the bathroom, he looked a bit awkward. “Now it’s your turn. Do you need help?”

“No... no, thank you.” Mu Wanxing blushed, her eyes darting over Soong Yichen’s towel-clad body before she hurried into the bathroom.

Although she had been in a relationship with Soong Yichen for a long time, they hadn’t taken that final step. The day he had undressed her was unprecedented, and the thought of him helping her bathe was unimaginable.

Since only her left hand was usable and she had to keep her right hand dry, it took Mu Wanxing a long time to finish her shower and come out.

Soong Yichen seemed to have already fallen asleep.

As she realized this was the first night since their marriage that he peacefully slept beside her, Wanxing felt a surge of emotions. She carefully reached out to touch his face, softened and harmless in sleep, and the sweetness of past memories filled her heart. Silently, she thought, "Yichen, it's so good to have you back. I will help you regain your memories."

Suddenly, Yichen's phone rang. Wanxing leaned over to see that it was a call from Qier.
