The grove was just as Beska remembered, the shifting black cloud without drowning what little light had filtered in during her last visit. Shapes in the shadows represented roots and vines, thick and suffocating to the trunks of which they had a hold. There, in the depths of the grove, was the shadow’s gate plant, and beside it a crumpled form.
