C19 The Keeper’s Trail

The silence that followed Aren’s accusation was suffocating.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The words lingered in the air like a curse.

“The Fall was never an accident.”

“Elyndra caused it.”

Kael stared at the Keeper.

The silver figure remained motionless.

For the first time since meeting her, she looked uncertain.

Afraid.

And that terrified him more than any Shadowborn.

Because Elyndra was ancient.

Ancient things were not supposed to fear anything.

Nyxara stepped forward.

The Dragon Queen’s golden eyes narrowed.

Tell us the truth.

The command echoed across the plaza.

Elyndra closed her eyes.

For several moments she said nothing.

Then she sighed.

A long, weary sigh.

The sound of a burden carried for too long.

“I never wanted this.”

Aren laughed bitterly.

“You never wanted to be caught.”

Darkness rippled around him.

The Shadowborn army stirred overhead.

The city trembled in response.

Elyndra looked toward him.

Pain crossed her face.

“You think I don’t regret it?”

The question hung heavily.

Aren’s expression hardened.

“I know you don’t regret enough.”

Kael stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both turned toward him.

For a moment, the entire city seemed to hold its breath.

“I want the truth.”

His voice was calm.

Firm.

“No more fragments.”

“No more half-memories.”

“No more secrets.”

The mark on his palm glowed softly.

The Echo was listening.

Waiting.

Elyndra studied him.

Then slowly nodded.

“You deserve that much.”

The plaza disappeared.

Not physically.

Mentally.

A vast illusion spread around them.

Silver light consumed the city.

The sky vanished.

The towers vanished.

Everything vanished.

When the light faded, they stood somewhere else.

A memory.

A real one.

A thousand years old.

The ancient city of Skyrend stood before them.

Alive.

Vibrant.

Untouched by war.

Thousands of dragons soared overhead.

Humans filled the streets.

Laughter echoed through the air.

Peace.

For the first time, Kael truly understood what had been lost.

Then he saw Elyndra.

Not as an echo.

As she had once been.

Young.

Brilliant.

Ambitious.

She stood inside the Veilspire surrounded by scholars and Keepers.

Ancient maps floated around her.

Magical equations filled the air.

She was searching for something.

Obsessed with something.

Knowledge.

Power.

Answers.

The memory accelerated.

Days became months.

Months became years.

Elyndra studied the Veil relentlessly.

Eventually she found something.

A weakness.

A way beyond it.

Beyond the barrier separating worlds.

A discovery that should never have been made.

“I thought it was another realm.”

The older Elyndra’s voice echoed through the memory.

A confession.

“I thought it held knowledge.”

The vision continued.

The younger Elyndra activated an experimental gateway.

A small opening.

Tiny.

Controlled.

Safe.

At least, she believed it was.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then something looked back.

The darkness beyond the Veil noticed her.

And smiled.

The gateway exploded.

Shadow poured through.

Not enough to start the Fall immediately.

But enough.

Enough to begin.

Enough to awaken what slept beyond.

The memory froze.

Silence followed.

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

They had seen the truth.

Elyndra had opened the first crack.

“I tried to fix it.”

Her voice trembled.

The illusion dissolved.

The plaza returned.

The city returned.

Reality returned.

Elyndra stood before them.

No longer proud.

No longer distant.

Simply tired.

“I spent years trying to contain the damage.”

She looked toward Kael.

“Telling anyone would have caused panic.”

Aren’s eyes burned.

“So you lied.”

“I protected them.”

“You protected yourself.”

The words struck like blades.

Elyndra flinched.

Because they were true.

At least partially.

The ground suddenly shook.

Hard.

A deafening boom echoed across Skyrend.

One of the city’s outer walls collapsed.

Screams rose in the distance.

The Shadowborn assault had resumed.

Aren looked toward the horizon.

The moment of truth was ending.

War was returning.

But before anyone could move, Kael spoke.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

Kael’s heart pounded.

The Echo stirred inside him.

Fragments of memory sliding into place.

A realization forming.

A terrible realization.

“What happened after the gateway opened?”

Elyndra hesitated.

Too long.

Kael noticed.

Aren noticed.

Everyone noticed.

His stomach dropped.

“There is more.”

The Keeper looked away.

The answer was obvious.

There was.

Aren’s voice became cold.

“Tell him.”

Elyndra remained silent.

“Tell him.”

The plaza darkened.

Shadow gathered around Aren.

The city groaned.

Finally, Elyndra whispered:

“The Shadowborn were not the first thing that came through.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Kael stared.

“What?”

Fear entered the Keeper’s eyes.

The same fear he had seen earlier.

The fear of someone remembering a nightmare.

“There was something else.”

The wind died.

The city seemed to freeze.

Even Aren’s expression changed.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.

Elyndra swallowed.

Then spoke the words that changed everything.

“There is a king beyond the Veil.”

A distant roar echoed somewhere far beyond the world.

Not dragon.

Not Shadowborn.

Something older.

Something vast.

Something awake.

“The Shadowborn fear him.”

Aren slowly lowered his head.

The gesture alone confirmed the truth.

Kael’s blood ran cold.

The Shadowborn weren’t the ultimate enemy.

They never had been.

They were running from something.

Something that was finally coming.

And somewhere beyond the collapsing Veil, a pair of enormous golden eyes opened in the darkness.

Watching.

Waiting.

Remembering.

The true war had not yet begun.
