Kathmandu was located in the northwest part of the Kathmandu Valley, at the junction of the Bagmati and Bichan Matti Rivers. The mountains surrounded Kathmandu.

It was an ancient city with a history of more than 1,000 years, with numerous palaces and temples built by successive dynasties of Nepal. There were more than 250 pagodas and temples in the center of the city
