C2 Chapter 2 The Geometry of a Siege

The safehouse wasn't safe anymore.

Vance sat in the dark of a gutted basement underneath a defunct textile mill on the southern docks. A single, battery-powered lantern sat on a wooden crate, casting long, sharp shadows against the brick walls.

On the crate lay his gear: three captured 9mm magazines, a roll of high-tensile friction tape, a small bottle of machine oil, and a detailed floor plan of the Aegis Tower—a 40-story luxury apartment complex owned by the syndicate's chief money mover, a man known only as The Broker.

Vance's hands moved with mechanical precision. He stripped down the captured sidearm, cleaning the firing pin and lubricating the slide guide rails. Every movement was optimized to eliminate waste.

He didn't think about his fallen squad. Sentimentality slowed the hand. In street combat, a millisecond of hesitation was the difference between a clean deflection and a severed artery. He only thought about the physical layout of his next target.

The Aegis Tower had three main security checkpoints:

The Sub-Basement Garage: Secured by automated rolling steel gates and four armed guards with high-frequency comms.

The Express Elevator Bay: Managed by biometric scanners.

The Penthouse Vestibule: A reinforced choke point with reinforced ballistic glass and a separate, isolated air filtration system.

Vance didn't plan on using the elevator.

He picked up a heavy, steel-core climbing rope and a pair of industrial-grade mechanical ascenders. He wrapped his forearms in thick layers of friction tape, protecting the skin from friction burns, then pulled his ballistic cowl back over his face. The faceless mask settled into place, turning his expression into a void.

He loaded the weapon, chambered a round, and clicked the safety into place.

The Broker had sixty armed men in that tower. Vance had twenty-four rounds of ammunition and his own two hands.

The odds were exactly where he wanted them.
